Longshot here but I just got an 01 400 4x4 Kodiak and my issue is when I press the 4x4 button, I can hear the actuator in the front but nothing happens after that… any ideas?
It could be the exact same problem I had in this video, or you could have something wrong inside your differential. Knowing what I know now, I'd check the coupler first. If you still can't get it to work, crack open the differential and take a good look at the actuator mechanism. You should be able to test that right on the bench. Hope that helps! Good luck to you, and thanks for watching!
Could be. I was glad it was something simple, but disappointed in myself that I took the whole differential apart first! Thanks for watching, and hopefully that's the problem!
Thanks for the video. My 03 bruin 350 wont go into 4wd mode. The 4wd light comes on and i can hear the motor engage when i press the drive selector button but thats it. After jacking up the front i spin one wheel and the other wheel isnt turning, i think they should both turn, do you have any idea? thanks
Only one should spin on this type of differential. If you hold that one wheel that is spinning, then the other one should start spinning though. This machine has a traditional differential in the front (without DIFFLOCK) so that you can still go around corners and be able to steer with 4x4 engaged. Some models have the DIFFLOCK option so if you're buried you can engage both front wheels, but it'll only go in a straight line until you turn it back off. Hope that makes sense... Sounds like you may have the exact same problem as I did. Everything seemed fine unless I put any kind of load on the front end, then that coupler would slip. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

That part is called a "Gear Coupling". Part number 5GH-46123-00-00. Part number 38 on PARTZILLA: www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/atv/2001/kodiak-4wd-hunter-yfm400fan/front-differential
I believe it was called a Gear Coupling. If you go to Partzilla.com, drill down to your machine and it will be in the Front Differential parts diagram and list. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
Oh yes, I did it dirty on that one! I didn't show it, but I did mention at around 10 minutes that I was going to "clean it off". I power washed the entire thing, inside and out, and blew it dry. The outside of the housing is stained so it doesn't look perfect, but all of that loose dirt and mud was completely gone. Thanks for keeping me honest!
Next week im going to buy a similar bike and its stuck in 4x4 this video was exactly what i needed to decide on buying it thank you.
You're welcome! Hopefully it is a great machine and you are able to enjoy it. Thanks for watching!
“Didn’t split where I was expecting… pulled out here not there..”
Foreshadowing if I’ve ever seen it 😂
Glad you got to the bottom of it!
Haha you know it! Yes, I was glad too. So far so good with the new part!
Thank you very much for documenting this, very helpful to me!!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Nice job. Difficult diagnosis you had to get to the bottom of.
Thanks! Had me stumped for a while, but we got it! It's still running like a champ.

I recon this is the same problem my one has just started making that noise

@@3DayWeekend Thanks for your reply
I just looked at it again
I have all 4 wheels off the ground
When it's in gear and in 2wd the front drive shaft spins when I give it throttle
Of course the front wheels aren't turning
When I put it in 4wd and engage the throttle the front drive shaft does not spin
It wants to and there is a very noticeable squeaking sound from the driveshaft
I can manually turn the shaft in both directions and the front wheels will turn
If I spin the wheels manually the front drive shaft will spin, just not on it's own
I'm thinking it's the shaft itself
The sound is like a squeaking belt
No grinding or knocking
Thank you! this my issues too! do you have a part number?
Thanks for watching! Here's the part I needed:

Yeah, I got a (sticky float)
I'm not sure what you're referencing. Looks like auto-correct may have gotten you!
@@3DayWeekend carb is leaking gas when on, done some studys, just look up common carb problems

No offense but I'm a mechanic myself and I'm cringing because you didn't clean all the dirt off before disassembly.
