Please do a video on minor rust repair and prep before paint. Thanks
Is it best to go for for three coats of clear if orange peel results from inexperience or incurable pressure problems with the gear at hand? I'm assuming that the peel effect can be buffed out - if the clear coat is thick enough??
Karibu Tanzania Afrika mashariki
Is there anywhere else that the gun can be purchased? Amazon is all sold out
This is a fine example of the importance of skills, rather than having high end equipment
You mean impordence?
True, but maybe not in this case.
I bought a pancake compressor from HF and it lasted for about 4 hours of actual use. I kid you not!
I would say if you are looking for a compressor buy a good quality one and forget about the price.
@@shinigamilee5915 ah yes, money grows on trees anyway
I’m screwed bc I have none :(

Thank you for including what you did to the gun between coats and between base/clear. I'm sure it's minor to experienced hands, but I really appreciate that detail step.
The cleaning of the gun tip right? I paid attention to that too lol
Enjoyed that detail too. Thanks!
I mean if you don't know to clean a gun before paint hardens then I really wouldn't suggest touching one
@@ToxicMrSmith Oh stop it
I've had good results using two regulators, one on the gun and one at the compressor. You set the one at the compressor to a few psi above what you need then use the gun to regulate it down to final pressure. You get much more consistent pressure at the gun while the compressor tank empties.
Painted an entire 99 Durango with a small bostitch pancake compressor a $10 yard sale 20 y.o. Suction fed Ingersoll Rand gun, a gallon of Rustoleum gloss black thinned out and clear coated and it came out amazing. This was almost 2 years ago and it still looks great to this day and the owner gets compliments on it all the time.
Hey man how do I mix paint or do I use just rustoleum paint
This is literally what I want to do with my 98 Grand Cherokee, and all I have is a pancake compressor. I am still shopping around for a gun though.
Do you live in Florida? I wanna do my Tundra!
@@BionicleC4 Gonna need to find a LVLP gun. Harbor freight guns aren’t gonna work well for you because they’re HVLP
Brian used HVLP.
That civic is going to be the only one around painted with 10 different guns! .....And no one will even know by looking at it! Good job!!
"Don't over think it, it's just paint" well spoken
I work at a collision Bodyshop and that paint job looks better than the self-proclaimed badass painter at my shop.
We all know that guy lol
Every painter seems to think they're the best in the city
Its not about the compressor and the gun, its the man who do the job done 100% skill salute to paint society
Thank you for doing this and taking us through each step. This is really an awesome step by step reference for me when I spray my engine bay.
You can run the pancake compressor into a holding tank. It'll increase your air volume making the compressor cycle less and also keeps the air pressure variances to a minimum. Plus an air holding tank is a good addition to a garage for quick tire inflating away from the compressor.
Note on this, it does work, I have done it.
However adding a larger tank will make your compressor run longer each time it comes on, so be careful it can overwork the compressor and burn it out.
Curious what would be the ideal size holding tank to max performance and limit variance I would guess somewhere in the 15-30gallon range?
Would using a 8 gallon compressor make that much, if any difference at all then a 6 gallon?
The Beauty of You and Paint Society is you present us all with options and thank you. As in life some of us have more and some have to deal with less and still manage to get a satisfying result and this VID proves it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills.
I would've been curious to see how a LVLP gun instead would've performed in this set up
Hi Brian, I have learned a lot about why my paint jobs have not met my expectations, but with your videos I will improve my skills and meet my expectations. Thank You
After watching some of your videos a while back I got one of the purple guns from Harbor Freight to spray oil based enamel on wood work at my brother's house. At first we tried using his 10 galon compressor but there was no way it could possibly keep up. I brought over my contractor's compressor that can handle multiple framing nailers and it did the trick.
Major props to you on being able to overcome your limitations and get that incredible finish.
All the tips I got watching your videos are be patient, don’t rush, and spend time on the prep work. Great results come with the right work. Thanks for sharing.
#1 thing that help a small compressor: remove restrictions! Look inside a 1/4” air fitting. Tiny hole. Use a good 3/8” hose and get 3/8” fittings with 1/4 npt threads. I have a 15-16 gallon California Air Tools oil-less compressor that advertised 5.4cfm at 90 psi. I could see the pressure drop and when I paused could hear the hose fill back up with air! Upgrading the fittings for higher flow made all the difference in the world. I also tapped into the air below the switch (straight off the tank) and installed a 3/8” filter regulator. I can run a die grinder, mini belt sand, or palm DA constant now.
Higher flow is good for bigger tools that need the airflow but not good for the compressor itself. To increase run time and pressure I would use the 1/4 npt fittings with 1/4" hose on a smaller compressor.
@@ljguy300 CFM (cubic feet per minute) you can move more air with the same pressure if the hose and fittings are bigger. Common sense. If the tool consumes air faster than the hose can provide it, you’re toast. That’s what was happening to me.
50 foot 3/8 hose vs 10 foot 1/4 hose will make a world of difference when spraying
Simply amazing how knowing what it takes to do a job correctly also gives you the knowledge and skills to do a decent job with just what you have at hand. Great video!!!!
This video inspired me to paint my own car, thank you.
Really found this video good as it is aimed at most of us who don't have spray booths or big compressors and tinker about at home. Very impressed how it turned out and i do understand that it turned out better because of your understanding of how paint works out of a gun but it does show what can be done with practice, Thank you for this and any more hints for the person tinkering at home. Big 👍 from the UK.
I just love watching these vids to be in awe of the skill and pick up some zen.
I'm actually been looking for a video like this and you finally made one! Thankls!
Woo hoo! Pro results on a home budget! May have to try this out.
I started to watch him a few months ago. And I have learned a bunch since then. You are very very good at what you do. I like the way you explain everything so the average person nows what you are talking about.Love the videos.
Awesome work. I remember how when I first got into airbrushing, so many pros were always commenting how doing this in your home could kill you and cause an explosion, etc, etc, etc. As if people would be too dumb to know how to ventilate and as if they're trying to paint an entire car/frame at once. Thank you for showing this is not only possible, but successfully doable.
I've done similar but to overcome the small compressor size i used an old helium tank to double the air tank size
(Adapted a nitto fitting to the top tap and bottom drain threaded holes, top nitto to gun to help trap moisture)
Worked great for me
my 20g which i bought today painted hood bumper fender no problem and thanks to your videos help me out a ton can’t thank you enough but still a newbie and still need to figure out somethings
I’d been watching all over CZcams for small compressor paint jobs and you finally made one! Score!!!
amazing results for what was given to you. Thanks for posting this up.
great video. I wish you had included the setup of the gun and your practice spray settings. What was the pressure you set the regulator? Talk more about the paint and why you chose that paint and how you mixed it.
Love this channel and all of the things you test and teach us about. I was wondering if this possible because all I have is a 6 gallon pancake compressor. I was very curious and here you are making a video of it. Makes me want to go get a POS car and try an paint it LOL.
Your talent and experience overcame the shortcomings of your equipment. Nice job and straightforward video. Thank You!
I wanted the interior of my old truck painted. I have a small compressor too. See your video gives me a lot of confidence. Thank you.
I’m actually , pleasantly surprised , I’m wondering if the gun is offered in HTE/HE , would probably help that little compressor since they use less cfm than HVLP , of course your experience helped this job come out better than someone who is brand new at this , but you showed that anything is possible ! Great job 👏🏻
Nice!! Been waiting on this video to drop
Love you did this video. There’s always an option to get the job done👍
I wish you were in tennessee and could spend the weekend helping me paint my whole car. I've been obsessed with the idea lately and I've been doing so much information gathering, and I genuinely appreciate your videos.
Appreciate your can-do attitude. Thanks for clean language. Can watch the videos with the kids and they don't learn words that you don't want them to repeat. You are a quality kind of guy, all around.
Thanks for posting this one. I'm looking at getting a compressor soon but I'm leaning towards a 20-30gal. It won't be used for painting often (maybe a couple times over ownership) but I'm definitely looking to repaint my beater, or at a minimum, parts of it. I figure I'll just do a couple panels at a time.
Most important factor to mr in determining what to buy is the noise level. My small Compressor is so noisy I cannot give it away !
This came out great and phenomenal explanation of what needs to be done in this kind of scenario. Cool vlog ✌
This is definitely the kind of motivation I needed. I'm not a body guy by any means, but I need to redo the rockers and bumpers on my truck. I've been told time and time again that a 6 gallon compressor just isn't enough for painting. Considering no one can really explain why, I figured I would buy one...if all else fails, at least now I have one to fill tires with. Though I do remember a guy I used to know years ago telling me that painting isn't as hard as people make it...there's nothing you can't fix and redo with painting.
We’ve all been anticipating this video and as usual, it never fails to deliver. 👍 Another thing to keep in mind, is the duty cycle of these compact compressors.
Steve, what do you mean by “duty cycle”?
???
@@almccallie4314 He means that these small compressors are not made to be left running constantly. At some point they'll overheat., trip a protection circuit and shut down, or worse, fry themsleves. Spraying creates a constant demand for air that these compressors are not designed to deliver. They'll do it for a while and then they'll stop doing it. Maybe forever.

I really appreciate your videos. I am learning a lot. They have given me the confidence to do the paint job on my car myself. I just need to finish w/ the rust repairs.
I am more interested in these at home videos. Conditions, equipment and scenarios that the typical person watching your video will be working in. I especially like the product reviews and demos.
I noticed this weekend that Harbor Freight now has a copy of the original 3M PPS system, called the SPECTRUM Universal Paint System. $19 for starter kit w/ total of 5 liners/lids. Adapters are $9 each. I would like to see you do a review of that system and comment on it.
They also have a Braun Color Match Light for $39. In my price range vs the Sun Light. Once again, I do not know how it compares.
Ok.. I have watched a lot of your videos. I have learned a lot. I didn't think I would subscribe. But your professionalism and great reviews made me pull the trigger on joining. I am now thinking about buying my own gun to do small projects. Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing more reviews on guns. Thanks.
Painted a VW beetle recently with a pancake compressor. Thanks for your videos. The biggest issue I had was the paint not atomizing. It looks good but cuts and buffs nice. Thanks for your videos they have been a tremendous help!
Good information as always and thank you, but how do you keep everything clean with no overspray in your videos ? I'm amazed how you achieve it, when I painted in my garage with 2k isocyanate hardening paint system, sticks on anything it lands on, you can never get it off when its dry or cured.
Should try out the 29 gallon harbor freight compressor. Great video btw👊
awesome video, thank you for taking the time to make this! I used to do prep at a local place, now I feel like I can actually spray and get decent results. Thank you!!!!
Wow, that turned out much better than I expected
I'd love to see you work with the Fuji paint sprayer!
Love it bro.
Love your channel ! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us !
Brian you are an inspireing teacher what you do is delivering knowledge liberally and trust me you will be blessed for it.
Hi Brian. This video helps a lot to build confidence and start spraying. I have a question and it’s not a real world situation. For a panel with scratches in clear coat, can I DA the panel with a P800 or P1000 and reapply clear coat? I.e. go over the original basecoat and clearcoat with new clear. Will this look bad or it’s a standard practice in blending jobs?
beautiful work, thanks for sharing, amazing skills certainly to make that set up work
This is super detailed and very well explained, thank you.

AGREED!
Same. I almost started on my Beetle till I learned about CFM

Absolutely. This isn't my job, and have some bits needing some work
I’ve painted a whole car with a 4 gallon twin tank hitachi/metabo compressor with a 2.8 cfm and a cheap lowes spray gun and it worked just fine.I did have to wait for the compressor to fill up so I had to do a lot of thin coats
I'm surprised you didn't blow out your 4 gallon compressor. Lol
How did the paint come out? Because i want to paint my truck but I don't have a like a 30 gal compressor or bigger I only have a pancake compressor and i don't know how it will hold up
That was good you show this video , cause many of us are not professionals and we only pait at home. I appreciated bro! As a matter of fact I paint out side in the evening 😉
Awesome video! My buddy wanted to paint his offroad rig but didn't have the equipment. He actually took 3 small compressors, plumbed into a main line. Worked out pretty good, not show car quality but it worked
Great video. I'm just beginning and I appreciate your explanations on how to get the best you can out of a small setup. I do have a question. What size hose are you using from the compressor to your gun? I was using a 3/8" hose and switched to a 1/4" hose and it helped my compressor when using other power tools. Would that help with painting?
Man, i was revisiting this video hoping to find if someone had asked this very question. I wish he or someone with the know how would have answered it.
Saw that Fuji system on the shelf. Sure would like to see you paint a whole car with that. Been thinking about getting one but I’m still on the fence about it.

Painting is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do.
Personally, I’ve seen many different ways of doing the same thing. I even work and do the same kind of spraying on houses. Honestly, I think it’s up to how good you personally feel like doing it.

I'm wondering if you have a video about painting a plastic bumper, without a static removal tool.
When I was learning music production, and didn't have all the cool tools, my mentor told me ....IT'S NOT WHAT YOU HAVE, BUT HOW YOU USE IT to get the job done
I feel like there's adult actors told the same thing...

Why not use lvlp gun?
Great video !! How do you think the Astro lvlp gun would have done compared to the touch up gun you used ?

Nice idea on putting paper on the floor. I will be doing that for sure when I paint my car in the next few weeks!
This is perfect for painting my antique tractors and impliments
When you're finished, do you have to wet sanding it with 2000 and polish it or can you leave it like that?
I used to paint industrial, and my old boss who just passed away would say, "Wherever you see a run it won't rust under there"! We didn't like getting them, but it was funny hearing him say that! LOL
😂
Thank you for your opinion and tutorial
Thanks for posting this one.
Coatings rule is coverage +1 more. 3rd clear pass would increase coating thickness, durability,& longevity out in the sun & elements. Already set up and taped off, gun laying there. Extra time spent is well worth it IMO!
Bro you're gonna have everybody with a pancake and a harbor freight gun thinking they can paint 🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣
this is what i was waiting for haha was really digging your spray can videos to.
FINALLY video that answers my question
Haven't gone through the whole video at the time of this comment but....
the longer the hose .. the larger the volume of air to replace when pressing the trigger.
3 meter hose is enough with these mini setups
Great point
@@PaintSociety maybe you should try it in V2.0 video with other adjustments, such as the .8 tip you mentioned and any other input you may find relevant
Difference is very noticeable, pressure is kept for longer and the compressor does not cycle as often.
@Do One you are probably right, but this little puck gives around 2.5 CFM , long hoses do make a difference in these cases.
it's almost airbrush territory
Interesting, I was thinking the longer the hose, the better because it increases storage capacity
Yeah I'm not even gonna try it you are a real pro. People are going to be disappointed with that 6gal
you're a natural teacher man
Cannot believe that came out with that kind of quality great technique geat video love this guy to paint my 70 t/a !
Having done a few small and medium jobs with a detail gun (and I REALLY like them) but not quite as small a compressor, I'm betting that the 1.0 tip would be the sweet spot. Yes, the smaller tip needs less air to atomize the paint, but they also spray less paint overall, so where the smaller tip will help make up for the limited air supply as you go smaller on a large surface like a fender you'll find that it gets harder/takes longer to get coverage and maintain a wet edge. With the .8 tip you'll have problems with that it will just take FOREVER and you'll be fighting moving too fast for what the gun is doing and maintaining a wet edge. It will be the same problem as the traditional issues with rattle can paint jobs, where it will be hard to keep things wet, get things covered and prevent tiger striping (now spray cans and spray can nozzles have gotten much better in recent years making this not as much a thing with the name brands).
I like a 1.0 and even a .8 on stuff that doesn't have large flat areas (projects that I can think I've done with smaller tips that I've liked were things like an engine crane and a moving dolly), but smaller than a 1.0 would be a nightmare on a fender or door.
Without the limited air supply, the 1.2 is really the correct choice for a job like that. If you were doing this with a _good_ 15-20gallon or any 30gallon the 1.2 would be the choice (or a fullsize LVLP gun).
