    • @luchaDor
      @luchaDor Před 7 lety +5

      Well, that's a personal preference of course, however, with our family, we find it much easier & more convenient to just jump in and scoot between the 2 seats to the back. No latches or folding/flipping seats to get back there. Easy in, easy out. You also have better rear view mirror visibility w/o the middle seat in the way. Again, its just our preference. We stumbled across one with captains chairs and instantly liked it.

    As a vehicle engineered or on road use in snow and gravel it did surprise me by getting that far. I think the Durango was pushed as far as common sense would dictate, while avoiding some serious body damage on tires that are not all terrain or mud terrain.
    Too bad you don't have a tire sponsor because a comparison on the stock wheels versus an all terrain would be a great review and illustrate the difference tires make.

    • @levthelion
      @levthelion Před rokem

      A question for an engineer... Will a system which automatically applies brakes to the one spinning wheel in the air (like in the video) help, by provide torque to the wheels that are on the ground? In other words if you jack a car up in the air and the wheels are free to spin, if you somehow stop one front wheel and one back wheel from spinning, will there be more torque to the other two wheels?

  • @aaronanderson5500
    @aaronanderson5500 Před 6 lety +6

    Cool review. Yes, I would do stage 3 (and make it) with my Durango Citadel. It has a very mild front lift and 32" all terrain tires. I use it off-road, and use low range too. Drove up some similar keep roads on a recent road trip to Colorado in the snow, and it did very well. Thanks for doing a review that shows at least some of the Durango's capability off-road!

  • @SJS93035
    @SJS93035 Před 7 lety +8

    Dodge Durango is a great SUV. But you need the V8 Hemi Durango if you want to go off-road. The V8 has a much better Awd/4x4 system. They use the MP-3022 (Select-Trac II) 2 speed transfer case, that can send 100% of the power to either axle and has a 2.72:1, 4wd low mode. The V6 only get the single speed (MP-3010), it is not good off-raod and only helps in bad weather. Try it again with the HEMI and you will make it.

    I have a 2014 Durango AWD special service vehicle... It's done nothing but impress me. Unfortunately, they don't make the SSV anymore which is why I havent upgraded yet. She's still going strong
    I've takin her everywhere, she dominates in the snow, rain, mud, never had an issue
    AWD Durango is absolutely underrated. Especially the SSV variety.

  • @mpsangha
    @mpsangha Před 7 lety +55

    this would've been better if you had the HEMI because that has the 2 SPEED transfer with a LOW RANGE option directly out of the Grand Cherokee...the V6 AWD is a single speed case. not really meant for off road... just inclement weather for soccer moms who can't drive in the snow...

    • @blacksheep343

      Would not have made a difference. Once the Durango is crossed up (poor articulation), it looks like it lacks the BLD type system from the Grand Cherokee to apply brakes to the spinning wheel and shift power across the differential to keep it going.

    Common the 3.6 is not meant for any offroading. I have 2013 model hemi and with low range option and there's a huge difference in performance for offroading when i switch to low, that I can climb something that steep with loose ground. The power transfer is very good But i suffer from the low ground clearance.

    • @aaronanderson5500
      @aaronanderson5500 Před 6 lety +1

      Bilstein 5100 adjustable height shocks for the Jeep Grand Cherokee will help with front ground clearance and remove the rake, depending on how you set them up. That's what I run with 32" tires. Rocky Road outfitters makes a 2.5" lift kit all around. You can go up 3" total without getting out of factory alignment specs. It's surprisingly capable off-road. Dodge even has a skid plate kit you can get if yours doesn't already have it.

      Usually if you floor it with traction control off all 4 will spin with the increased loads, but unfortunately just by looking at the low clearance of the front skirting you can tell it was not built for off road. I own one and it is very good on-road in the ice and snow of Canada, but it is essentially the Mercedes E-class chassis and its AWD system, like the Chrysler 300 AWD or Dodge Charger AWD...

    • @jockosboy17
      @jockosboy17 Před 7 lety +7

      These have full 4wd. The right rear wheel was spinning. If he would have stayed on the gas longer the traction control would have applied braking to the right wheel forcing the power over to the left rear wheel but that would have increased the possibility of the rear sliding over into a tree. If you wreck a manufacture tester/loaner they will stop loaning them to you. This is their business and without loaner/testers they would be done for. These are nice family haulers that do not come with locking differentials.

      @k.r.v.4219 Před 7 lety +2

      Alexander Golovaty it's because you were not able to see the other outside rear wheel spinning, that is why. There was power going to the rear, it's just the way the Durango had one front wheel in a hole and the rear on the other side in a hole, that is when with an open differential in the front and rear, the wheels with the least traction get the power.

    From what I read the Durango is AWD not 4WD but there was an option to have a lower range gearing in the transfer case that put in the Cherokee wheelhouse. Is that still and option and was this one equipped with it?

    When are manufacturers going to figure out the one wheel in the air spinning thing. WTF is the point of that? What are the solutions other than locking diffs? Acura is using braking the spinning wheel with the SH-AWD system. Does that do anything?

    Great video, thanks Roman and TFL.
    Based on the Grand Cherokee -- makes sense that it is decent off-road. I wouldn't try to take a Citadel up part 3/3... or R/T or any of the models. Grand Cherokee - any 4x4 model - yes.
    Those of you spewing anti-American auto sentiment: believe what you want. Most of the Jeep models are the overall most American-made products when you actually figure in where parts are sourced from, where each vehicle is made, etc. CR has been biased as heck for years, everyone knows that including themselves lol. Everyone has affirmation bias, but some have it stronger than others or implement it more aggressively.

    Maybe not hit it faster but let the front wheel hang and spin for second while the computer tries to figure out it needs to grab it with the brake. You know let the brake limited slip try and figure it out a bit before letting off the throttle.

  • @axia24

    Would I do it? HELL NO. I have a Grand Cherokee Limited with the Hemi, whose sticker is nearly as much as that Durango's, and I would NEVER take that kind of chance with it. Of course, the GC has a low-range and locking rear diff, so it may have made it up that without needing momentum or more aggressive tires - but still, not a chance I would have taken in that situation!!

  • @greatray6262
    @greatray6262 Před 5 lety

    I hate the fact that Dodge transformed the Durango into an CUV from a SUV. I have an 2005 Durango SUV which is equipped with both AWD and 4WD and it is a beast in the snow. Though I love the styling of the newer Durangos I would never buy one because they lack the offroad capabilities of the older vehicles.

  • @R777-RLM
    @R777-RLM Před 7 lety

    The problem, is today's ridiculous large wheels, with narrow sidewall tires, that are to wide and have a flat track. All season tires from 10 or 15 years ago would have made it up stage 3. If you had front wheel drive, except for maybe in the northern part of the country, you didn't need snow tires. I live in central Utah, at 5,600 ft, and nether I, or anyone I know of in my small town, bought snow tires back then. Now my wife's Jetta has a hard time in 3 or 4 inches of snow. Score one for the tire companies
