    I really enjoyed Baby Driver and its main protagonist Baby. Like my video on The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, I wanted to offer a more metaphorical interpretation beyond what the filmmaker may have intended and focus on the subject of introversion and how it relates to Baby. What are your favorite movie introverts?

    Glad I wasn't alone in noticing this. As someone who's generally introverted and often has headphones in, I found Baby to be very relatable. The scenes where other characters seem to be offended by him not speaking or pull his headphones out, seeing how happy he was when he was just lip-syncing to a song, all that stuff really hit home. It's rare to see an introverted character as the lead in an action movie. Usually it feels like if a protagonist's introversion is focused on, they're either a cutesy character in an indie romance/comedy (ex: Amelie, any Wes Anderson movie) a freak/recluse/social outcast, often coded as either mentally disabled or autistic (ex: Batman movies, Edward Scissorhands, any "tortured/obsessed genius" film) or a humanity-hating sociopath (ex: Taxi Driver, There Will Be Blood). When you do have an introverted action hero, they're usually the stoic, silent badass that the audience never truly gets to know as a person (ex: Drive, Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name). Rarely do introverts simply get to be the hero and have their introversion acknowledged without being reduced to a tired stereotype. Baby subverts that. He's a talented, charming character with flaws, a fleshed-out personality and a backstory. He's easy to connect with and his introversion is treated as normal. He feels like a real person.

I come from a family of extroverts who have no idea what it is. My mom honestly thinks i'm sick and need help! But Baby is very relatable.

      I’m an introvert and I’m literally all of these things? Not a tired stereotype, a lot of the higher-intellect introverts fit what neurotypicals see as “Hollywood stereotypes” (maybe because we’re interesting enough to have movies inspired by us?). And being a misanthrope doesn’t make you a sociopath; usually the opposite (in case anyone has this misconception).

      That was actually one of the first things I noticed. But then again, I always tend to notice the little things in movies, and I quote lines from movies all the time. Lol. I saw a lot of tiny details in this movie the first time I watched it in the theater, especially the song lyrics written on the buildings in the beginning when Baby is getting the coffee, yet there were a few things that still got past me. Lol. One of the many reasons why I love this movie so much, is that there is always some little detail you didn't catch before every time you watch it.

    I really appreciate that you pointed out how extroversion is more valued in our [western] society. When I was in middle school I really hated the fact that I was an introvert- all the things that used to be me just expressing myself became awkward or weird. I felt unpopular and unable to relate to people or express myself ‘properly’ anymore. Since then I can say I really like that I’m an introvert now, I’ve learned how to socialize quite well and I know my limits regarding human interaction. I no longer envy extroverts but recognize they are just people with strengths and weaknesses like myself.
    Great video. 👌🏼

    You make so many interesting points that I hadn't previously considered. And you may be right that it wasn't Edgar Wright's intention, but I never think intention matters with this sort of thing. Your analysis really consistently holds up throughout the film, it's actually crazy how fitting a metaphor it is. I mean, I watched the movie like, 4 times to make my video and I never thought about it from this perspective, thank you for sharing. As a giant (2 meters/ 6'7" tall) introvert, the pulling of quotes and terms from other places and using them as if they are your own is something I've done since childhood. I did so in the attempt of communicating with extroverted shorthand, as when one is ensconced in the inner life, words and phrases don't come readily to mind.

      While I don't enjoy much music, I see myself a lot when it comes to his driving. You see, usually I'm a calm, reserved person and you won't see me being loud or noticeable. But behind the wheel, I change. If there is no traffic and it seems safe, I love reving the engine to 7000, braking the last moment and maybe drift a little when it's wet. Again, I won't put anyone in danger and drive normal when others are around, but when the road is empty and I'm all alone, a monster awakes inside me. The sound, the forces you feel and the feeling of controlling a beast is the best thing in life for me.

    Wow... Did not expect to see you doing an analysis with Baby Driver and double didn't expect it to be so personally relevant!!
    Thanks for helping add another layer of understanding to something that by it's nature (introversion) can cause a lot of confusion and self doubt. I think we need better examples like you've pointed out with Baby to give introvertly inclined people permission to feel completely OK to recharge their energy internally than what seems like the prevailing norm of seeking to energise oneself externally.
    “The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it."

Now that I reflect on myself and I realize that I am a lot closer to Baby than I had thought before. Music is an extension of myself, I have countless playlists for different moods and settings and they even affect the way I skate wether it be skating to lectures or skating at the skatepark. Like always spot on.
    I saw the trailers for the movie and they made it pitched for the "HIGHSPEED ADRENALINE AWESOME STUNTS" crowd. If I knew there was more depth to the character I would have wanted to see it.
    Introversion is something I live with. I carry headphones in my pocket, spares in my car. At work. My phone is my connection to music. Where I can play playa tune to match my persona or mood. I practice Taoism meditation and reflect on the smallest moments in life. Maladaptive Daydreaming is something I'm finally staring to control, to pull out of. I've gotten to try things out life has to offer, experiences or a run at a park or trail to a Cancer Marathon. I've gotten much better therapy in understanding myself watching your videos than with the psychologist and counselors I've met with.
    I happened to come across the "Secret Life of Walter Mitty" at a 99 cent shop just lying in a display rack. Nowhere near from the video and audio section. This was after watching your analysis video. I saw it as a sign from the universe.I bought the movie without hesitation.

    This is relatable beyond measure. I study at Uni and have no choice but to share a room with another person.
    Such a living condition is affecting my ability to recharge and I'm unable to communicate my needs to my roommate/floormates. Its got to the point that I'm even developing symptoms of my roommate's insomnia.
    I feel like an outsider multiple times in a day because all my friends, when I asked them, aren't as affected by communal living as I am.
    I'm thinking of leaving Uni and doing online schooling where I can do a better job at my work without this even being an issue. I don't know if that will be a bad decision though..

      I used to live in this apartment across from school that was super cheap. My relationship with my roomate started to deteriorate and I had no money to find a different place. She was nice but she didn't understand boundaries so I couldn't study at my apartment in peace. I found a spot in school that was meant to be a quiet place. Even though people were there, no one talked to each other because it was against the room rules. I spent most of my time there or other quiet places and only went back to my apartment to sleep. Some universities also allow you to move within the complex with different people. You could check if your school has that so you could find people who understand your needs better. Hope this helps. Universities are usually more beneficial than online schools so I hope you hang in there or find something that helps you.

The trailer for this movie portrayed it, to me at least, as something seen too many times before…a high octane car chase movie with some bad guys and a good guy caught in the middle, with the main selling point being that the good guy is a good driver. But your insights into ‘Baby’ took me by surprise and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It also helped me to reconnect with my, often buried, introversion. It helped me see how much extroversion I pretend with for the sake of relating to others who are extroverted and how draining this is. It helped me use my earphones again, the source of my energy in certain situations. It helped me feel more comfortable to know that the ways of ‘Baby’ are okay and don’t require outside acceptance to feel complete. Thank you for this and please do more!

    Fantastic video. Baby is a character that I've connected to and some of those reasons are pointed out here. I felt that I understood where Baby was coming from in his introversion and that the music is not only a way of disconnecting from his current predicament but also as a way of displaying the various moods and feelings he's experiencing at that moment, while having the extroverts parading and intervening. I think Wright does a fantastic display of introversion in an uncommon way, an interesting take on introversion for his Walter Hill inspired action musical. I believe to understand and feel the way Baby perceives himself and the world around. The observation really struck me too, as I would constantly do the same. Reincorporating my observations in my own way with others around and so on. It's a film that really struck me and still sticks with me, not on just an astoundingly impressive filmmaking level but also on an emotional level. An excellent video. Great film. The way music is used (great soundtrack too btw) to '"speak" for Baby, and to show his emotional state. I've got earphones on all the time, listening to music...widely varying according to my moods. Different music for different tasks...I loved that about Baby...damn, such a deep film...for a "heist/ action" movie. Great stuff.

    Introversion is development of core and often is also accompanied with memories of childhood exclusion. Precisely because we know truth is not very acceptable in the world. Repetition is irony with group mindset good reading but there is a moreover missing he is also playing his dilema externally. He does the film. It’s also a mirror of a filmmaker inner life. 👍 like your work a lot. Congratulations

    • @LikeStoriesofOld
      @LikeStoriesofOld  Před 6 lety +24

      Thanks! Assuming the intro- and extrovert energies are present within each person, my guess is that it exists as a spectrum with introverts strongly leaning towards the 'introversion pole' and extroverts preferring the 'extroversion pole'. Ambivert can then be used as a word for people who sort of fall in the middle - who don't have a strong preference either way, which I think is a nice way to break down the dichotomous view on intro/extroversion and add some nuance to it.

    • @RedWhimsy
      @RedWhimsy Před 6 lety +2

      Thank you for mentioning this. From my understanding, most of us actually are toward the middle, showing elements of extroversion and introversion. I've had several people think I'm extroverted whereas I've had very extroverted people assume I'm introverted. For me, it depends on the situation.

    • @DarkAngelEU
      @DarkAngelEU Před 6 lety +1

      It's kinda like a scale instead of two ends of the stick and I think that's where people seem to misunderstand what a spectrum means. It looks for balance by itself, not ultimates.

    Dear Tom/Mr.VL;
    I wanted to thank you for your delightful wisdom, conceptualizations, themes, opinions etc.
    Notonly bc you brought back my passion & ❤ not just for cinema but the craft of acting/storytelling itself.
    Your content is inspiring and from my very limited experience in casting, you have a very "memorable" face for showbiz.
    You mentioned working on a reel for yourself..I was wondering if there's any specific app or program you use/suggest and if you'd like to collaborate on a project. I have plenty of ideas and would ❤ to hear yours. We seem to share a plethora of opinions and themes which would be great to expand upon..
    In case you don't see this msg I'll copy/ paste it to another source to try to reach you.
    In the meantime, keep up the excellent work, you're doing great 👍

    Never really tought about but sometimes even with my best friends i feel a high pressure to speak just because that iswhat i am "suposed" to do. i like being quiet but it feels as if others see it like i am pissed off or sad or something so i am constantly forcing myself to speak. I love driving because it feels like i have a reason to be more quiet i can blame it on that i am concentrating on the road instead of just sitting on a couch because then i have to speak because there is nothing more to do really.

    Here you talked about Baby being introvert, and I was thinking "Bruce Banner is also kind of a introvert hero on the avengers movie. He should do one video about the psyche of the characters and motives in the avengers movie, that should be awesome". :)

  • @bethisabee
    @bethisabee Před 6 lety

    This brings together some things I noticed in the film, myself, esp about the others entering Baby's space, I also thought it was also partly the fact that he's HoH as well as an introvert: there's something different about him - he's quiet listens to music, a young kid, seems unassuming - and the others see this un-threatening appearances as threatening! Since they live in an environment where everyone puts up a front/us aggressive in some form, Baby is just his introverted self trying to cope with his hearing problems & yearns to escape his 'job'
