    From Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz to Scott Pilgrim, Edgar Wright has directed some fun movies. His use of music, sound, action and editing are second to none. Today, we'll look at his 2017 film Baby Driver and how Edgar Wright used clever costume design to color code his character.

      contrarian opinion: the movie bugs me. It feels so forced, as if everyone was having a bad day and tried extra hard to be enthusiastic even though they hated it. Or like a British actor doing an American accent--It technically works but there is so much effort behind every syllable that the character never seems relaxed even during scenes they should be relaxed in (watch Christian Bale and Henry Cavill movies for examples). if nothing else, I feel stressed when I watch it. Anyone that has had some anxiety issues knows when their body is carrying physical stress and when it isn't, and the whole time I watch Baby Driver, I feel stress in my joints and in my head. Another nice visual touch: Buddy wearing blue marks him as a cool, calm and collected character, but Darling warns about what can happen "when Buddy sees red". At the end of the movie, when Buddy is in a homicidal rage, he is bathed in red light - we are seeing red right along with him.

    Baby also wears his t-shirts and jeans 50s style. No v-necks, no baggy pants, so both him and Debra are old school stylish. Coz its a classical love story. Boy meets girl, he is a criminal with a golden heart and love for cars, she is innocent and kinda reminds him of his lost mother.

    • @alenunya
      @alenunya Před měsícem +3

      "Debora that loves her Baby and brings him coffee at a diner" also screams 50s. As well as the fact that he never calls her on her cell phone, but rather on the diner phone, which also puts us back in the old days

  • @matman000000
    @matman000000 Před rokem +454

    Another reason why Baby wears plain and b&w clothes: The side characters are proud of their criminal life, they see themselves as rebels or kings, so they literally wear it on their sleeve. Baby wants to get out, he doesn't accept that life, so he stands out by being muted and generic in comparison.

    Without looking too deeply into it, people forget that cinema is simply moving photographs. Photography is visual art, and any excuse to make that picture more beautiful, vibrant, or interesting is not wasted in this medium. The cinematographer is just as important as the director, writer, or any other key player in this collaboration. When it all comes together, you have a masterpiece.

    I watched Spaced recently, it's a tv series with two seasons and the first thing Wright directed. It's so interesting how they all used that show as a sounding board for whacky ideas, and a safe space to try fun techniques, references and tropes, and see what worked and what didn't. The first episode is a good example of this, because the choice to do a montage when it could have been a two minute conversation is both very extra and ultimately not effective, but he tried it anyway. Totally recommend to someone who has seen all of his other works and is into the humble beginnings of their fave artists

  • @peter-peterpumpkineater4982

    I always had trouble hearing English so colour was always what I would first notice about a movie.
    I don't know how to read the verbal conflict between these two character but their always wearing conflicting colours (red and blue/ patterns and plains). It's why I immediately fell in love with something like Moonlight and Fight Club

    Opening of your video clicked something in my head as an animator and character artist for the first time, Wright's characters are like caricatures or cartoons (also considering adaptation of Scott Pilgrim it makes sense) and just like how those deal with simple and contrasting features in their design, here the color and clothing seems to be carrying that role heavily, just like how you would design a character having their distinct identities at display by how they dress. I never looked at this movie specifically with such a POV. Great video .

    Fun Fact: Most color theory is outdated. The opposite of Red is Cyan, the opposite of Green is Magenta, and the opposite of Blue is Yellow. Blue and Cyan are different colors.

    The Halloween costume thing is such a gem of an idea. So brilliant, how else to make a character memorable enough than if people can create a costume out of it? Genius.

    I think it would be interesting if there was a movie where the hero is corrupted and the villain is redeemed at the same time, but they never meet in the gray zone at the same time. For keen eyes the hero could have a purple patch on their clothes somewhere, and the villain a silver patch or something to foreshadow their journeys.

    This discussion is more so about “color psychology” as opposed to “color theory”:
    in which you would have talked about color schemes and palettes, complementary colors, Split analogous…essentially which colors work best with each other, including examples from the film of these color schemes.
    Did not get what I was expecting, but hey…👍🏿

    Sammo Hung understood the importance of colour in fight scenes, you can see it on display in most of his movies but maybe best in the Lucky Stars trilogy. The good guys always wore bright colours to contrast with the bad guys who were usually in dark suits.
