I've talked about Constantine before, specifically how smartly the movie handles its exposition. But did you know that Constantine was director Francis Lawrence's first feature film ever? Pretty remarkable given the craft on display here. Keanu Reeves gives it his all. The handling of exposition is on point. The CGI still holds up. It's no wonder the movie has become such a cult hit these past years. But today, I specifically want to look at how the film was edited, and how many choices were made in post-production to bring us the version of the movie that we have. Let's dive in.

My favorite movie. Everything Mike Judge makes I love, Beavis & Butthead to King of the Hill. Something about his take on people and the absurdity of our lives. I myself am also a Texan, like Judge, so I also love his ability to cut through the politically correct nonsense. I feel like if I could be an amalgamation of two characters it would be Peter from Office Space and the Comedian from Watchmen. I too have a hard time grasping the seriousness of our existence, being born somewhat attractive, but having the personality of a nerd. I’ve always struggled with my juxtaposed character traits, leaving me a very lonely, bored, lazy, confused human with no friends and an exhausted family.
Is there a satire movie or novel on femininity!!! Who gave them the right to mock something that has protected these nerds!
I grew up watching Sam Raimi's Spiderman and the various Superman movies (even the Incredibles) where the idea of a hero revealing their secret identity was extremely sacrilegious. I think I was about 11 or 12 when the first Iron Man movie came out, and the ending where Tony revealed his identity absolutely blew my underdeveloped brain. I remember thinking something along the lines of "CAN HE DO THAT??" Good times
Harry Potter was PERFECTLY cast, it's a shame the last movies aren't as well directed as the first 3
Didn’t know she was in the Constantine movie.
sw before disney-shit was amazing, perfect.
What a gret video!
No. No. never.
Terrible title. Down doot.
Well done old man.

@9:20 does Padme call Anakin baka in Japanese?
Whether or no it is meant for words separate from allegory, droid conversations would be lost without words. Also the irony of C3PO thinking he killed Luke, Leia, and Han in the trash chute while they shouted to celebrate living would be lost.
This video made me wanna watch the movies in Japanese, thanks 😊
The high ground scene is still stupid in black and white and another langauge. That's amazing.
Having to cut the movie short after running out of money is the most Pythonesque moment of the entire film. It reminds me of the BBC series Neverwhere which had such a low special effects budget the whole thing was carried on atmosphere and acting.
cool, but if anybody actually does this, they're pretentious and gey
It's a great movie. I never understood how it wasn't more popular.
Its so true bro the music bridges the brain in a way that allows the fantasy to be engulfing in nature
Imagine getting to say “i was in the chorus singing during this scene”
If you want donations, drop the hackneyed homosexual affectation from your speech and make a concerted effort to be orthogonal. 👍 You can do it!
When I saw this, I had no idea the comics existed. This was mind blowing to me, I didn’t understand the criticism at all.
Love the idea of the B&W Japanese dub. That way (for anyone who doesn't know Japanese, at least) we can pretend the dialogue in Episode 3 was well written
Nice to know how much better it could have been if he wasn't so stubborn about Constantine's isolation.
To cut out Michelle Monaghan from a movie, well, that's a big sin that I would never be able to commit.
"quiet film" are always really good. Minimize dialogue but still allow just enough exposition to clear up what's going on.
utterly fantastic movie
dude you really need to use more air when you speak. Your vocal fry is awful. That would at least make up for your other speech defects.
Clicked because I thought I was gonna see some ass, stayed for a great video
gotcha "Backstroke of the West" is the only way i should watch.
Captain K!!!!
Constantine is one of the best movies ever. Top ten for me.
George: Star Wars movies are designed as silent movies Kathleen: Put a chick in it and make it lame and geyyyy
First contact, Green mile
Oh man, the 2000's... the last of an age where you could smoke in an elevator to push that "I don't give a fuck" vibe to the maximum.
I kid you not, the original star wars movies were where I first learned dialogue was a thing. It was this moment as a kid watching one of those movies (probably episode 5) where I realized that if I listened to what the characters were saying, I got *more story.* I have that distinct memory, so I think that before then, I'd just been watching the movies without paying attention to the words. and I LOVED them anyways. I always felt like I was following along anyways. So I guess, originally, I *was* watching a silent film.
Why the actual fuck wouldn’t he just use a real golf ball?
I've always wanted to rewatch Star Wars in a different language ever since Rick Worley mentioned it in his prequels video
If all the music videos shown in the video are the director's catalogue, dude had major BANGERS in his resumé
FYI, the g in Monaghan is silent. Mon-a-han
Best joker there ever was and will be
Easily the greatest portrayal of Satan of any movie, ever made. However, I must give honorable mention to Viggo Mortensen in The Prophecy.
This reminded me of Metropolis by Fritz Lang, the robot in which, was the inspiration for c-3po
Holy crap, you’re right. These movies are so much better without dialogue… that’s hilarious and just goes to show how bad the script was.
How can I watch the black and white Japanese version?
I don’t know if that’s the case for the Sequel trilogy. They seemed to depend on the dialogue to advance the plot
I resisted watching the movie when it first came out because I was so committed to the Constantine of the comics. A friend convinced me to give it a chance and it instantly became one of my absolute favorites movies.
Constantine is not Comic accurate, but it's a wonderful way of taking essence of the source material and _adapting it_ in the artist's own way. It's a brilliant movie in isolation, feeling like it's more _inspired_ by things like Constantine or the Dresden Files, with a very heavy neo-goth noir tone. It takes big swings and really pays off. Its depiction of Hell as this _perpetual nuclear blast_ is iconic. There are really nice uses of _Show don't tell,_ like needing to be claravoyant to get into Papa Midnight's club, and instead of Constantine just SAYING it to Chas, we get that nice shot over the bouncers shoulder showing Consantine getting the card correct immediately and Chas getting a different card and guessing wrong, thinking it's just a password and not a test. Consatntine is now entering this place _alone,_ surrounded by people with some level of supernatural ability, and he's _not messing around._ Showing Angela's reconnecting with her powers as time goes to a halt like Constantine going to hell and the bathtub shattering is fantastic, a baptism and violent rebirth into the world she won't hide from anymore. It's just GOOOOOOD
It would be a fascinating experiment, some years down the road, to present AI with the Star Wars I - VI stripped of all vocals and see what plots/scripts it came up with on just the observable action.
One day vin diesel will be in a safdie brothers movie I guarantee it
