    In this editorial episode, Mr. Sujit Nair discusses how India has made substantial progress in reducing multidimensional poverty over the years, but challenges persist, particularly in addressing disparities and vulnerabilities within its population.
    India has seen significant changes in its poverty landscape over the years. Official poverty estimates from 2011 reported that approximately 269 million people, or 21.9% of the population, were living in poverty. This data, based on Household Consumption Expenditure Surveys, was last updated in 2011, and two rounds of data collection were missing.
    However, a UNDP study in July 2023 highlighted remarkable progress, indicating that 415 million people in India escaped poverty within just 15 years, from 2005/2006 to 2019/2021. This achievement was part of global progress, with 25 countries, including India, halving their Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) values in the same timeframe. India's MPI reduced from 55.1% in 2005/2006 to 16.4% in 2019/2021. The report noted improvements in various indicators, including nutrition and child mortality.
    A subsequent report by Niti Aayog in July 2023 revealed that approximately 14.96% of India's population, or 20.79 crore people, still lived in multidimensional poverty. However, there was progress, as multidimensional poverty decreased from 24.85% in 2015-16 to 14.96% in 2019-2021, representing about 13.5 crore people moving out of poverty. This index considered factors beyond income, such as education and health.
    The report detailed various indicators contributing to multidimensional poverty, including nutrition, years of schooling, access to clean cooking fuel, sanitation services, housing, and asset ownership. While there were improvements in some areas, challenges remained, particularly regarding nutrition and education.
    The report also highlighted regional disparities, with several states making significant progress in reducing multidimensional poverty, such as Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. However, India still had the highest number of poor people globally, including a substantial proportion of children living in poverty.
    Despite these advancements, India's poverty situation remained complex, with urban-rural divides and gender disparities. Female-headed households in India experienced higher poverty rates compared to male-headed households. Moreover, India continued to have a large vulnerable population, with the potential to slip into extreme poverty.

    China has been able to raise its population out of poverty. India is far behind in doing this. The vision, strategy and priority is simply non existent. The present Govt is failing to pay MNREGA wages in non BJP states. They are only concerned about winning elections.

      Yes and the will again and again because 80% of BJP voters are lower middle class uneducated Hindus and few higher cast well off Hindus who suffer deep inferiority complex after domination of India for centuries by Moghuls and then British... British treated Indians as coolies. Bjp used this inferiority complex and common enemy of Hindus as Muslims and that has worked for 2 terms. It Wil work also for the 3rd term after 2024 elections.

When these get disrupted, chances are people have lesser mindshare towards to feed their ego. People on the ground know the lowest denominator of people are marginalised and people like Adani are favoured. BJP will have to do a lot more this time to come close to victory with coalition. 😢

    It is a real shame that elected governments, as narrated in this editorial, are pulled down, which implies that the will of the people in our country is not respected. It looks that the current political dispensation is bent on gaining power by any means. And, that not good for our country. India boast that is the largest democracy in community of democratic nations. But the way democracy is managed, at present, makes us hang our heads in shame.

    Nair g,you are absolutely right. Your editorial is very balanced unbiased. All the development in our country is due to all the governments and all the people. It is not only by one government and one person. The the reality is that foundation stones are never visible of any beautiful building like Taj mahal . similarly who made the foundation stone people forget their names. Another considerable point is that in development of country we praise all the big names and the governments like nehruji and all the prime ministers etc but the reality the bitter growth is that people who are working very hard is IAS IPS OFGICERS and other persons from peon to minister .
    all those persons to whom nobody knows even you do not know: they are pillars of development of our country on which our country has reached this stage. The BJP in the last 9 years has made sure that although a lot of vacancies are not filled by regular intake, some vacancies are filled with kith & kin’s of BJP/RSS ministers. These people are securely placed as secretaries in various government departments. Hence even if the BJP loses which seems impossible they still have people at helm of affairs.

Thank God for the Software industry we have a sizeable middleclass that can bloat these numbers but majority of the population are a left out lot. Simple example - the Petrol prices( fuel prices) are kept artificially high to feed the greed of few in Petroleum industry. Even though Russian crude was imported showing these poor this gujju government is refining that and selling to EU at a profit that is not being shared with the rest of poor in India.

    A realistic statement:development and good has happened, is happening, will happen, irrespective of which government is in power..
    What the statement of Sujit Nair DOES NOT day is that no one government, past or present, need not take all the credit for the good and development achieved in India.
    Sujit Nair also raised a pertinent issue, which needs reflection that everyone needs to understand is: Development is no development unless it reaches the least and lost of Indian population. This is an important parameter when considering about development.
    It is in this context that the significance of numbers should ba understood, and analysed.
    Thank you Sujit for enabling the people in India understand the significance of development, in terms of numbers.

    Coming to the question of healthcare, as people get older with need for affordable healthcare, the healthcare premium is being increased manifold. People in the lower age bracket are charged lower premium. This is a lopsided welfare measure. In fact healthcare premium should reduce for people who are senior citizens. Today healthcare is a rip off. Insurance companies, hospitals etc are just fiddling around with insurance . If one goes for cashless, one can be sure that with one admission, the entire cover will be exhausted . Really lopsided

    Numbers don't lie. But, numbers can also be misleading or meaningless. I have never seen any party use vanity metrics as a big achievement as the BJP does. Let's all admit it, all political parties cherry pick the metrics that make them look good and don't always give full picture. But, the way BJP uses Vanity metrics is whole another level.
    Let's take the 5th largest economy claim as an example. One has to be living under a rock to not have heard about this "achievement". In 2004, India's GDP was $700B, 2014 GDP was $2079 Bn. Under UPA, the economy grew $1.3 Trillion, but we went from 12th largest to 10th largest economy. in 2022, India's GDP was $3393 Bn. In 8 years under Modi economy grew by ~$1.3 Trillion, but we went from 10th largest to 5th largest economy. As you can see, the position in the world is based only on how other countries are growing. Most of the countries in Top 10 are already developed economies and they grow at a slower rate. Some of them haven't grown at all for quite some time. UK, which India surpassed to become Top 5 hasn't grown its economy much since 2007.
    The fact of the matter is that under the UPA, both the GDP and GDP per capita PPP grew at a much faster rate than under Modi Govt. But, all we hear about is that India is the 5th largest economy and that is because of Modi. There is absolutely no basis for the claim that somehow economy is drastically growing faster under Modi.
    Is India the 5th largest economy in the world? Yes. Does that mean a significant increase in growth in the last 9 years as compared to the previous 10 years? Absolutely No. Numbers don't lie, but they can be meaningless.

    • @josephjohn2095
      @josephjohn2095 Před 9 měsíci +1

      Very well said bro. Figures per se are meaningless.The question is who is benefitting from this so called development. The proof of the pudding is in its eating. Only the rich & wealthy comprising around 10 percent are benefitted & growing massively. The govt.itself admits that it it is giving free rations to more than 80 crore poor people under BPL which translated means around two thirds of our population are living BPL living below sustenance levels . Then where is the development happening. Data of International agencies like UN & World Bank portray very grim picture of India where hunger, poverty, child mortality etc.are concerned where we stand below 130 or so in some cases out 190 odd countries in the world. These statistics dished out really " hides more than what it reveals"...

  • @RamanVNath
    @RamanVNath Před 9 měsíci +1

    Mr Nair, numbers also lie. Numbers represent something. It matters how are those numbers are created, and whether those data was collected correctly. If you say the average height of a person is 175cm, the number 175 does not lie, but whether that number represents the average height depends on how the data is collected. What is more important is not the number but what it represents and how accurately that representation (or data association) is done.

That need great Avtar, well , let it rest at imagination! 140 crores polulation.!!!! Every Indian politican will Speak about" the suffering " of people. Honestily no body has any answer to full employment. Employment in Indian concept is a work of choice well paid , leisurely and prestigious , There is a lot of work ,needing working hands, in agriculture, service industry. But who cares? Dire poverty only force people to take that kind of employment! Then we have the minority " ills". This is mostly farce and political propaganda to exploit differences through ethnic differences. Manipur is the latest example, Nasty media!!! , See how a good agriculture bill failed, How unifirm civil code pended, failed. ? How Adani issue deleberated by the paid media, How George Sorous who is banned , is indirectly supported by our media??? . In reality India has no comparison,it is a unique experience on the earth. !!! But those who feed comparison is western well supported by confused media , Any western media uttering is goespel in India! ! Latest you will hear is ABOUT OCCRP, A CHARITY ORGANISATION OF MARYLAND, SPREADING ADANI STORY'! Court verdict is farce but foreign news paper is gospel.

If you are so much interested in improving those in poverty, why don't you give a part of your money that you spend every day on food to the poor people ? If everybody does that, the poverty will be eliminated in India. Talking and broadcasting on your channel is easy, (and maybe doing to make more money or with bad motives, ) but not easy to sacrifice something and to contribute to solve the problem.

    Numbers don't lie that's true. It applies to congress
    Congress never defeated modi neither in Gujarat or lok sabha elections. So modi will win 2024 hands down

      I dont kow to what extent you are aware of the industrial foundation laid by Nehru, and followed by Congress. But are you aware that the Capitalists of that day excepting TATAs had ulterior motive to keep our nation poor. We had to pay advance money in post office and book reservation for a Bajaj Scooter , or Ambassador/ Premier Padmini car Only when Indira gandhi started this Maruti project these so called capitalists started manufacturing more numbers otherwise they always complained to government not to issue fresh licences for manufacture So dont blame Congress or Nehruvian policy blame the present day your capitalist friends @@ashishkulkarni4165
