- Rangers met Alania Vladikavkaz in the qualifying round for the 1996 Champions League and won the first leg 3-1 despite trailing at half-time to a goal from Igor Yanovski. Derek McInnes equalised on his European debut before Ally McCoist eventually scored, after missing a number of chances to give Rangers the lead. Gordan Petric headed in just after Alania were reduced to ten men when Artur Pagaev was sent off while Alania missed a late chance to get back into the tie when Yanovski missed a late penalty.

Wonderful stuff. I remember being about 11 years old watching this and going totally mental when Petric scored the third. For about 2 months after this game, every goal I scored in the playground I pulled my jumper off and waved it the same way Petric does after his goal! Ah, the glory days...

i was at this game and when petric scored a big baldy guy next tae gave me a bear hug n a cood hardly breath.must admit tho a niver thot wed take 7 aff thum er ther.that wiz a good gers team

@SWF90 Still got thrashed every second week by teams like Juventus, Ajax, Auxerre, Grasshopper and got humiliated the following season in a qualifier against Gothenburg lo. And also lost to teams like AEK Athens, Strasbourg and Steaua Bucharest lol. Beating an ill - prepared Alania Vladikavkaz doesn't change any of that lol.
