Apple is still cooking well. The fact that this runs at all on an ARM chip on a fanless laptop designed for the most casual use is a monumental achievement. Thanks for the video, you're doing great work!
I mean, it's an achievement but realistically it means nothing. If you wanted to game, either cloud gaming, an iPad or a Windows (ARM) machine would be best. And for those who argue that it's for them who wants to do a bit of gaming, a bit of gaming for the average person doesn't mean installing a paid software product that you must go out of your way to get.
@@Weaselszone Gaming on a Windows ARM machine is a joke. Those Snapdragon Elite chips have lackluster GPUs. We can say all we want about Apple Silicon chips, but even the most basic one (M1 7core) is on par with a GTX 1050ti.

Finally some good hardware everyone can have
Great video, you have done a lot of work. I would notice the main problem with gaming on MacBook Air is heating. That's why I did thermal pad mod with my mba (24gb) and I'm also using svalt with fan (lowest speed, zero noise), it allows me to play Remnant 2 with 1080p, medium quality, balanced performance and the game looks great. Without all of this after 20 minutes in the game I could play only with potato quality and ultra performance upscaler...

Can you please do a video on getting PC Game Pass working on either VMware or Parallels _(or whatever works best)_ and the games that will install, play and unlock achievements? This would be of major benefit. Lots of people want to play PC Game Pass and get achievements, but only have a Macbook.
Wow I had no idea how much of a difference there was between the M3 and the M3 Pro chips. My M3 Pro MBP runs games like Elden Ring perfectly fine at 50-60fps at 1080p Medium. Crazy you have to turn it down to 540p lowest to get less framerate on the M3.
Edit - Also just for anyone reading this, Zenless Zone Zero runs perfectly at max settings at full native resolution through Playcover since it's running natively rather than through translation layers. Of course this video is testing GPTK2 though, so its still cool to see the Windows version running on Crossover.
The main problem is the fact that MBA is fanless.

the gpu doesnt seem to be getting a major upgrade, but the gains from increase cpu performance will be interesting to see cuz the games are mostly bottlenecked by the gpu.

Still waiting for an updated version of the Studio I really wanna replace my 2018 Mini as it's starting to show it's age and it loves to get really hot. I have to run the fan at 100% most of the time so it doesn't run at 100c
Let’s hope ARM on windows becomes the new standard in a few years so there is 1 less translation layer.
I think if that happens, Wine project will have a lot of work to do. GPTK, Crossover, Whisky and all the similar solutions use Wine as backend, which provides translations from Windows API calls to POSIX (Mac, Linux, FreeBSD, etcs) API calls, and due to the low-level nature of the project, existing Wine will not just run as-is for Windows ARM applications.
That being said, it seems like the Wine team is working on ARM version of Wine. It might take some time but I hope it will eventually get there.
All said this is pretty good. About what you would get on an AMD desktop APU. It's pretty incredible when you think about it.
Now that I know Sonic Frontiers works, I’ve yet to see Judgment, Lost Judgment, or Like a Dragon/Yakuza games (I recommend 0, Gaiden, Infinite Wealth, etc.) run on the MacBook.
My first Macbook was 2013 Macbook Air 11" and it couldn't run any game considered "contemporary" or "new" at the time. Only exception was I think Portal 2 (2011) and that was about it? Even older titles like Mirror's Edge (2008) had a hard time running on Macbook Air (through Wine, but still)
Now my Macbook Pro 2021 with M1 Max runs newest AAA titles made for x86 Windows with relatively high graphics settings, even though it has an entirely different ISA and has to translate multiple layers. (Albeit with some glitches but GPTK2 seems to fix a lot of them too) AND Big game studios are actually making Apple ports once again.
Mac gaming has really come far.
+ I bought Control with the intention of waiting until Mac port drops on Steam, but I just got through the whole game through Crossover. It runs flawlessly and it's a great game!

Based on the MetalHUD, it looks like the majority of these are CPU limited actually. CPU will also take a much bigger hit from all the translation layers than the GPU so it does make some sense
I would love to see some ray tracing tests with the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips since that's not supported with the new GPTK
Have you done any treats with the air using a laptop cooler? I was excited about the air but having any fans for longevity and battery for normal stuff. But to avoid temp based throttling while playing Minecraft I use a laptop cooler which helps a lot.
There is a new thing called metal shader converter and a new beta of gptk published in the apple developer page

Amazing video, thank you for reviewing all these games. Love seeing a growning gaming community in Mac. I use Crossover + M2 Max 32GB and I can play most of these games in Medium quality and "acceptable" resolution.
In one hand, is outstanding all the work made to achive windows apps to run so good in a different architecture. In the another, when playing the same game natively, I can play it in Ultra quality!.
I wish Apple would consider investing more in bringing more native games. Of course, spending more than $2500 for just playing AAA games, it is not good investment 😅

Wow if this works on a regular M3 air, i can imagine how it will be on the M3 Pro. I wanted to get the M3 max just for the extra graphics and cores, but it is off my budget. Was gonna focus on a M2 max just for the graphics, but M3 is more future proof

No issues with the thermals. You can put the Mac on your lap.
Will you test out Company of Heroes 3?
I tried to install the beta on an external SSD on my MacBook Air M2. Tried several times, but each time it started installing but after the reboot it could no longer find the external drive and so wanted to continue the install on the main drive which would not have been helpful. This was using beta 2.

It's weird that Tony Hawk didn't play well for you. I play Tony Hawk 1+2 on my m3 Air 24GB 10 core GPU and it runs really well on GPTK 1 and 2. Every now and then it will stutter, but it's totally playable, so I'm guessing the extra RAM makes all the difference here.
The problem with gaming on MacBook Air is thermal throttle, it looses like half the performance after a few minutes on demanding games. Anyone looking to play games should pick a machine with a fan

@@aq6825 Crossover is generally ahead of Whiskey since they're the ones actually making most of this possible (Theyre the #1 contributors to the WINE project which a lot of this is based on). Whiskey stays a few WINE versions behind Crossover out of respect, so its essentially a slightly older version of it, while Crossover has all the latest stuff.

I have stable 60 fps with base crossover in elden ring on my macbook pro m3pro
its kind of sad that a $650 steam deck can out perform most macbooks, at this point i don't see a reason to upgrade from m1 air as I still have a windows gaming pc and playstation for home gaming but will consider getting the steam deck if I want to game away from from home.

Yes it's because Doom runs on Vulkan, whereas Mac can only use DirectX11/12 via D3DMetal/DXVK or use OpenGL.

So, I will continue to ask for more non-fps games. There are a few here, but again, no simulators (MSFS, F1, etc) or games like Starfield. Is that because they cannot run, or just a lack of desire to test them?
It's because MSFS, F1 and Starfield don't work on GPTK2 or on Mac at all, sorry! That might change in the future.

Half the pixels of 1080p is slightly better than 720p. Im curious if the in game settings are just cutting the horizontal and vertical in half bringing it down to 540p which is 25% the pixels of 1080p, or if they're bringing it down to actually half the pixels of 1080p.
@@-Burb depends on how the game calculates the resolution. AFAIK most games calculate by the axis’s and not the amount of pixels in it of itself. It should be 540p if at 50% res scale
