  • Every game tested. Nintendo Switch handles all three BioShock games superbly, using a dynamic 1080p resolution to allow for a typically 30fps level of performance. Comparisons with Xbox One X also show it using the updates settings - including improved FOV - giving it an advantage over the last-gen originals.

@@kylerclarke2689 Very true! In their vids they may come off as critical of the Switch when reviewing games/ports for it, but it is very objective and they should be judging it this way since it gives you the most fair and true overview. But truthfully they don't dislike the system at all, but they don't hesitate to point out its shortcomings, which is very convenient (I mean they occasionally do for PS4 and Xbox One as well).

@Galva Tron WIth that in mind, I wonder if Activision would consider bringing over the remastered CoD games (MW, MW2 Campaign Remastered) even if they don't bother with current gen games. A better handheld experience than the Vita CoD game would be quite nice.
Switch ports are a gold mine for publishers after all (plenty of double dippers). Full priced late ports don't seem to phase buyers. Same would go for GTA V excluding GTA Online (though that may be the primary reason why Rockstar hasn't bothered with it).

That OLED brings the Darkness of Rapture and the Colors of Columbia out beautifully and it's really impressive looking for this small handheld. I think it’s because of the console GPU bandwidth limitations. High AF is limited by bandwidth, which isn’t a problem in the Desktop/laptop side.
On the Desktop side, the GPU has its own dedicated memory pool, so the data rate is significantly higher like 192GB/s or higher even for low end cards and laptops.
Meanwhile, the switch is limited to about ~25GB/s which is lower than even 360 at 32GB/s or the 256GB/s for the embedded RAM on the 360.
For perspective, The PS4 GPU has about 120-140GB/s.
I think it’s the Switch’s Achilles heel, the poor bandwidth between system memory and the GPU

Console dev here. From my experience you can gain about 1ms universally in a 30fps/33ms GPU frame by switching from AF16x to 4x. 1x even more.
A lot of console games have tight GPU budget so anything helps.

Would've like to see how the Bioshock 1 port compares to the Nvidia shield handheld from years ago. If I'm remembering right the switch was going to have a more powerful chipset than that machine but final production model had the same tegra chip. Would love to see what improvements the switch version pulls off.
Also, checking the early sections of these games doesn't really tell the full performance story. In particular, I remember the last few combat sections of Infinite going to straight garbage framerates back on ps3, would be curious if that's all fixed on the remaster versions. Obviously don't need to show those sections for spoilers but would be nice to know about the more taxing parts of the game

I remember trying to play Bioshock Infinite on my i3 3rd gen with Intel HD 3000 graphics. I can't remember specific frame rates but it became unplayable due to loading times. It had a hard drive, but I'm sure it was the CPU that was the bottle neck in that regard. I'm sure the GPU kept me at in the low 20's fps wise, but back then that didn't bother me much. Its weird to think about, but now that 30 fps looks absolutely horrible to me having had a decent PC for years. I can't help but remember those days with that laptop though, and think about how hard I tried to play infinite with a terrible frame rate and loading times, while the switch does it better. Had the Switch existed when I was in highschool, It would have absolutely blown my mind. To be completely honest, it still actually does.

Again Switch impresses with what it can do with its mobile chipset. Looking at those videos I'm still impressed with what the 360 achieved though. My steam copies of Bioshock games were automatically upgraded for free to the latest versions and I recently bought a Ryzen 3500U laptop for £240 thanks to an offer and plays it fine at 1080p on the laptop screen. Switch performance is starting to fall back a fair bit with what entry to mid-level laptops can achieve. The Ryzen 3500U laptop has 1.3TF of gpu performance which is about the performance of the original xbox one plus the CPU side is significantly more powerful than xbox one. A laptop like that can play a huge amount of fantastic PC games on the go which you may already own on steam anyway. I guess that is my main issue with Switch versions of old games, you are paying a lot to get those games and when support for Switch ends in a few years you lose access to your games if you bought them digitally. My laptop came with a 256GB SSD and I'm planning to add a 2TB HDD too.

the reason bioshock 1 and 2 run better than infinite is not so much engine related, it's because that port was done for the nvidia shield. which is far more powerful version of the same hardware. so it'd already been optimized for the platform.

Sometimes I think DF is too harsh or exquisite about performance in videogames, but I think it's ok to have that meticolous point of view so the industry won't fall into laziness when making ultimate videogame's experiences. In this case with Bioshock, I think specially Infinite in many specific situations had perfomance drops that were clearly visible but at the end, didn't ruin the experience.
