- Most of us love a good cider! But what if we could brew a cider all the way to 35% or 40%ABV? Distilling is illegal... But what about Freeze Concentrating? Also known as 'Jacking', is this legit?
For safety reasons - don't do this!

For her mead science project my daughter jacked mead she made herself (10% ABV). Freezer temperature was around -25-30°C (set to the ‘high’ setting for freezing large amounts of unfrozen foods). She then determined the alcohol content of the final product by using the boiling-off method. Can’t remember exactly how high the alcohol contents was, but somewhere around 30% ABV. Of course her paper contained a segment on the dander of methanol poisoning and the entire batch of jacked mead was used - and therefore lost - to determine final ABV. And… it was all purely for science. Never seen more enthusiastic science teachers. And other teachers. Gotta love living in Europe!
I love this!!
@@ErickandDerrick - As an end-of-year present, she gifted tiny sampler bottles of home made melomel to a few of her teachers this year: a blueberry mead we’d made together. For one teacher who doesn’t consume alcohol, she made blueberry-and-blackcurrant syrup. I’m a proud mama!
I haven’t done it a couple of times
So fella’s, how wasn’t it? I’m just getting into mead making and I definitely won’t be trying anyyyyy type of variation of this whatsoever with my first batch.
I mean who the hell in their right mind would want to make their own spirits that has a way higher alcohol content and tastes even more delicious due to its concentrated flavors from the fruits and spices you put in….. SOUNDS HORRIBLE
It’s not illegal if you do it for yourself

Any distilled spirit is illegal in the US even if it's just for personal consumption.
Beer/wine/mead/cider is fine
glad i didn't watch, i didn't learn anything. Thanks.
