  • Sharpening my Morakniv 105 carvingknife with the Tormek T8, to put a hollowgrind on it and finishing with Japanese flatstones + honing
Sorry for the long waiting on this. I've been sick with fever and flu with the worst timing ever! During christmas preparations and sales! So sales (=living) had to be prioritized to the max.
But here's the newest video for you :)

I love the cut test on the material it's designed to be used on.
Thanks for sharing your full approach to sharpening carving knives.

Thank you buddy! I’ll do my best to show what and how I do things. If people can use it, it’s a win win 🙂💪🏻

Thanks Jonas, this is the exact kit I have, but I was struggling to know how to get the best out of it. I find the Tormek small knife jig very difficult to load symmetrically. I very much like your approach: get it as close as possible, and then adjust it to the bevel at the point of use. A neat work around for a surprising design flaw in the otherwise excellent Tormek system.

      Hey Buddy!
The small carving knife jigg is okay, but needs a lot of adjusting. Even though I’m Tormek ambassador I recommend the Hewn and Hone Sloyd jigg.
You can say the SVM-00 is the hobbiest jigg, and the Hewn and Hone is for the pros.
It’s totally fine with Tormek I recommend that, luckily :D there’s also a price big difference.

      Hej Jonas.
Thanks very much for the heads-up. Ive been over to the Hewn & Hone website and seen what you’re talking about. It’s out of stock right now, but the price is still up. I see what you mean!

Why have the extremely expensive T8 if you are hand sharpening? Not being a jerk just trying to learn if it's a good investment for me.

      Hey Stan
Yeah, I totally understand your question. Carving knives works great with an hollow grind, but only if you touch it up with a flat stone. I might have sharpened it to much in the flat stone, as it is a video.. you know.
100% hollow grind makes the knife works less effective. 😉

That’s a beautiful Mora - any idea how old it is?? So I think you should be able to get it sharper than you did - those arm hairs should have been flying off... I think you might get better results by reducing the pressure on the knife each time you move on your finer stones/stropping steps... Cheers!

Is there a reason you can't just use the normal knife jig on a Mora? Is it too small to grip?

      Hello Aspazian
It’s 250 rpm. I’m not sure about the stone but you can google Tormek 250-SG 😉

An unmodified Tormek has 90 rpm. The 200 / 250 designation of the stones is their diameter in millimeters.

Why put a hollow grind? Wouldn’t a “ V “ grind or Scandinavian grind work better?

As i understamd it, when sharpening on waterstones, you only apply pressure on the edge trailing strokes and not on the edge leading strokes, i see you are using a lot of downward preesure while edge leading, is that on purpose and why might that be?
Asking to learn, not to criticize 👍
