      Is the thickness of the tiles and the walls crucial to fit with the other elements of your system? Could I use foam that is 1 cm thick instead of 1/2 inch? Following your measurements for length and width wouldn't be an issue, but the foam that is sold here is in increments of 1 cm in terms of thickness. Changing that to half an inch (1.27 cm) would be such a pain in the ass and a wire cutter would be a must have.

      @RPArchiveOfficial  Před 3 lety +1

      For the floor tiles in this build It is pretty much needed unless you make your own adjustments in many places... And even then :/
      Changing one measurement means countless others now won't line up, and the more I add to the system the bigger the problem becomes.
      That said, I use 10mm foam for some things (cottage walls, 6" or bigger ground tiles). They line up because they are basically 3/8" thick, so you can add two layers of 1/16" thick chipboard to one side and get it to be 1/2" thick. Or balsa, in the cottage walls case.
      If you needed 1/2 thick foam for the walls in the magnetic building, if you have a proxxon you could cut 1/8 thick foam and glue it to one side, thickening it
      Alternatively, 1" thick foam is usually available online? That's what I use, cut in half :)

      for metric i converted and rounded, because my system always assumes 1 inch = 2,5cm. Its easier, and just a tiny bit smaller. That is my conversion row if anyone cares:
      inch cm roundes
      1 2,5
      1/2 1,25
      1/4 0,6
      1/8 0,3
      1/16 0,15
      2/16 0,3
      3/16 0,45

    Here's an idea for added variety/visual interest: make a wooden version of the machicolations and combine them with some of the modular wooden pieces to make hoardings (a wooden version of machicolations often used temporarily during sieges, though they usually also tend to have roofs unlike the masonry)

    Only thing I’d add is that over here (America) card stock is SUPER different from chipboard. I believe what you’re using is a thin chipboard similar to what puzzle pieces are made from. Card stock over here is WAAAY thinner than even cereal boxes (which are also made from chipboard about the thinnest you can get) so you’d most likely want to look for something with the label “chipboard” over here.

    Great videos but as someone so used to the metric system specifically Millimetres, my brain has melted with 4/16ths and 3/8ths of an inch type measurements! *sobs * if you could include them in mm that would be amazing.

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  Před 4 lety +1

      Totally understand, though I find it useful to use imperial measures for games like d&d that also use imperial (1" to 5 feet), it helps to visualise the scale while planning and prototyping!
      For any other metric user's benefit I'll include a conversion calculator link here and in the description of future videos: www.rapidtables.com/convert/length/inch-to-mm.html
      I really would recommend aiming to get comfortable using the inches side of the ruler though. Usually it's as simple as counting the fractions of an inch, if it has 16 its showing 16ths etc :)

    Not sure if I missed it… but can you incorporate the magnetic dungeon floors to link up with the battlement pieces? The standard dungeon floor magnet placement is off, and lined up with the murder holes… would you advise dropping a 3rd magnet centered on the tile to line up with the 1x1 brick? Any ideas greatly appreciated!

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  Před 2 lety

      Yeah this is part of the problem with the redesign, the battlements were designed before I made the magnet switch :)
      I've got ideas for the updated version but I need to find the time to experiment....
      In the meantime, a bit of nickel strip sticking out in the murderhole fixes the problem, because you rarely look down the murderhole anyways :)

  • @knghtbrd

    How do the crenelated wall accessories hold up over time? Seems like they're made of some fairly light/thin foam for the supports at the bottom. They look great! (I might want to double the height of the merlons though. Assuming some of the races using them stand six feet or even a little taller, you kind of want them to be head-height, for fairly obvious reasons. Should be an easy mod.)

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  Před 2 lety

      They hold up fine, had them for 2-3 years now :)
      As for the merlons, speaking as someone who visits castles regularly and has many intact ones near his home (Scottish Border...), i find they tend to be just under head height, but it varies from castle to castle. Bear in mind if the castle is on a hill which they almost always are, angle of shot plays a big role :)

  • @TaylorAP13
    @TaylorAP13 Před 2 lety

    I hope you might see this and be able to answer a quick question. Is there any specific reason you use this card stock tab system instead of just carving a "slot" directly into the foam? Also, I noticed you use magnets in your more recent videos, do you feel like magnets are better compared to the card system? I would think the polarity of magnets would make it a bit annoying to use, but maybe it's not. Thanks for your time! Once I have time I will probably sub to your patreon and actually dig into making all this stuff! Love it!!

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  Před 2 lety +1

      Magnets are superior by far, and I use the card on at least one side of the slot as it pins it tighter and doesn't compress like foam does :)
      There are updated, even more magnetic versions of the builds on patreon with magnetic accessories, magnetic interior walls and (very soon) upgraded magnetic mountainblocks 😁
      Optional of course, but basically you get something nice for supporting the channel's existence :)

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Patrick,
      Tacky glue is a thicker, stickier, faster drying version of PVA, which I believe is achieved by including some kind of resin in the formula. It's a lot better than PVA for a lot of tasks, I find.
      Seems to warp materials less too, though it still will if you use a lot!

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  Před 3 lety

      Good question. Honestly if you don't have access to a hot wire you can use a rolling pin to squash one side of the foam down by 1/8",which is something I've figured out since then! takes a bit of pushing down but it does work, just make sure you measure all 4 sides at the end to make sure they're all the right height. :)
