Anyway…
Lava tiles are something every DM tends to want at some point, but the existing options are very limited.
Either you paint the lava and it ends up being quite dull, with limited 'glow' and usually limited modularity, or you buy a nice but very highly priced dwarven forge set for £500+. Which is unappealing for other reasons…and only really fits their tiles - which are equally expensive.
So, I designed my own! These tiles can be used to make lava flows and rivers or wide open volcanic lakes, that blend seamlessly with my existing volcanic builds and can even be combined with other build, layering the tiles on top.
The really nice thing is you can absolutely make this tile design a LOT cheaper even than this by painting the tiles instead - you lose the glow, but you do keep all the modularity. And make it affordable for any budget :)

Anyway…
MASK SAFETY
A few things we work with require good ventilation, a mask, or both.
HOT WIRE CUTTER
When using a hot wire cutter, solid ventilation can be enough. Open windows, and a desk fan next to the cutter that blows towards the window is enough in most circumstances - but if you struggle with this, or can smell it consistently - I would recommend wearing a filter mask (links in the equipment list).
The white smoke given off by the cutter is primarily CO2 and water vapor, which are far less harmful than other common art products like aerosols and paint thinners (or hairspray). The toxic values are far less than wood-smoke, which contains tars, resins, creosote, and acetic acid.
IF you burn the xps foam, rather than melt it, it gives off black smoke. This is toxic. Make sure you turn the cutter off if not cutting, and try to remove foam stuck to the wire with some scrap foam, rather than letting it burn up.
CUTTING/SANDING FOAM
When cutting or sanding foam, you want to be wearing at least a dust mask (though a filter mask will do) to avoid breathing in the dust. Always make sure to hoover up this dust once you're done.
GROUT
Always wear a dust mask when using grout, ventilate the area, and hoover it up once it settles. It is basically cement, you don't want to be breathing it in!
On a side note, try to wash your hands in a bucket and throw the water out, rather than washing it down the sink. A small amount probably wont do anything, but in excess in theory it can cause problems (again, because it's basically cement!)
BALSA WOOD
When scratching grain into balsa wood with a wire brush, wear a dust mask to avoid the sawdust. Fairly standard wood stuff.
GLUES AND SOLVENTS
Many things we use regularly (even home use) give off nasty fumes of some description - superglue, polystyrene cement (plastic glue), liquid latex, among others. For the most part, we don't work with these things for an extended enough period for this to be a problem, though following safety labels on products is of course important :)
As a general rule, I throw anything that 'smells' into this category - some are mostly harmless, but I aim for better safe than sorry!
Basic ventilation (opening a window) will usually be fine if working with them for a short period, but IF you intend to spend hours using one of these materials I would recommend solid ventilation, adding a desk fan, or even using outside.
MAGNET SAFETY:
Don’t use around small children or animals, if ingested these can be dangerous. Never let very strong magnets slam together, especially thin ones. They can and will smash under a lot of force, and then become very sharp, highly magnetic shrapnel. Not good. Easy to avoid though, just take care.
NICKLE STRIPS/STEEL TIN CAN TIPS AND SAFETY:
Nickel and Tin is safe enough to use if you're reasonably careful, I used to cut most of mine from tin can lids with scissors, though now I use nice smooth nickel strips.
Made sure you're wearing thick gloves when cutting and handling, I use some woodworking gloves.
If you want to make doubly sure the metal isn't sharp, use a metal nail file along the edges to round it off.

DRILLING TIPS
If you are going to use a drill, I found it better to get the dremel spinning first on the lowest speed, and then gently press it to the point I wanted to drill. If you press it in place first and then turn it on, I find the drillbit wanders a lot more from your initial mark as it winds up.
I also placed the piece on some scrap foam to keep my fingers away from the drill, and held the drill at the front, stabilising it against the table with my little finger, and withto gain another point of contact to stop it wobbling.
PLASTER PAINTING TIP
If the thin black paint doesn’t soak in properly and just acts like…well, like thin black paint on plastic - there is a way to get a good result still. This happened to me a few times, and I got around it by spraying the pieces black with an aorbrush (though a smooth coat with a brush would do) and sprayed it with ak ultra matte varnish, again with an airbrush but a brush should do. Finally, once newly dry I ran my finger over the matte varnish, which fluffs it up a bit more grey before its fully cured. A nice result without that drybrushed look….
LAVA CRUST PATTERN TIPS
I aimed to make the shapes jagged and uneven, avoiding curves and generally 'drawing' them like a coastline on a map, with bulges and coves, nearby 'islands' of lava skin that were clearly once part of the larger piece.
The return of the king
THE KING HAS RETURNED!!
Thank you both 😅
Most english speaking youtubers rarely provide links for italians so genuinely, thank you.
Glad I could help, it was a patron who pointed the company to me :)
Again you amaze us with museum quality artwork and still retaining the modularity, durability, and playability we gamers crave. Bravo!
Thanks Thaddeus! 😁
I hope this video means your COVID recovery is improving.
Glad to see you back
It is - this video took about a month, maybe more longer than it should have done, and I am still recovering but I'm a lot better than I was :)
Glad you’re back and feeling better! As always the video is worth the wait, thanks for all the hard work you put in!
Thanks Timothy! It's quite a recovery road and I'm not fully there yet, but I'm a LOT better than I was! 😄
The worlds you create with your terrain are amazing! The group who gets to play on these is very lucky!
that crackling black bits on top of the lava, chefs kiss. Well done your players are in heaven...I mean hell.
I do REALLY love that effect!
And, he is back with a vengeance. These are phenomenal!
Thanks Tommy!
Wake up babe, new RP Archive content just dropped
I'm speechless.... You're a genius.
"Matt(e) is easily dusted."
Why you little. . . .
In all seriousness, welcome back. I am so glad you are doing better. Long COVID is aweful and I hope medical science catches up with it soon.
Haha glad you liked that - my patrons actually turned it into a gif 😂
Yeah it is awful. I'm recovering slowly but surely though :)
You’re a literal wizard! Glad you’re back and taking care of yourself.
That Jefferson shirt is awesome
hello! sorry to hear you were sick. I honestly thought you were working on a massive project that was taking months to complete. beautiful work again, as usual! i love the realism and i can see how exciting it would be for players to play on terrain such as this. intensely immersive.
Yeah it has... Not been fun 😑
But I was also working on two massive projects, so....win? 😂
Followed BMC for a while, this dude takes miniature crafting to the next level.
There's that handsome devil!!! Glad to see a new video. Glad you've recovered.
I'm definitely getting there... Slowly 😄
Glad you're feeling better. You were missed and your new tiles look amazing.
Thanks Jeff :)
So sorry to hear about your health struggles. Hope you stay on the mend. Glad to have you back.
I'm getting there :)
You stand at the pinnacle of tabletop crafting, what an incredible build!
Wow, thanks Brad! 😁
Just bought a hot wire cutter! I told myself I would finish a painting project before I started building your terrain. Now I’m ready and soon I’ll be subscribed to your patron!
Awesome! Welcome to the archive then, we have tons of stuff to help you out getting started and if you have any questions just ask on the discord, if someone doesn't answer your question before I get there, I will :)
I’ve missed you’re content! I don’t know how I missed this upload but I’m here now!!
Welcome back, Matt, and glad your health is better.
Thanks bo :)
Absolutely amazing
Missed your videos, i'm glad to hear that you are doing better.
With your magnet technique you can also make a lavafall and let it run down the wall into a pool.
Awesome tiles, you can build what ever you can imagine.
For me, your tiles are by far the best.
Thanks stig! 😁
Lava falls are definitely planned...
@@RPArchiveOfficial can't wait for it.
Never loose your inspiration.
you are right to be proud of this sir, well done.
Welcome back. Glad you’re feeling better.
It’s a fantastic effect.
Thanks man :)
Sweet. Glad to see you’re better.
He's back!!!!! Boom!!!!
This is breathtaking! Stupidly good lava, the best I've seen! Why you gotta make me work so hard? :P Keep it up!
Glad you are feeling better and back on track. Great video
Thank you! And my wife and I are very glad you're "not dead". Glad you have recovered.
Definitely getting there :)
I have watched countless terrain artists, but u sir, are above them all. Sry for my english, not a native.
My God, that intro was beautiful! I love how the lava tiles turned out! #pompomshake
Hi, I was just watching your lava tutorial, and I had a video idea for you (you probably wont like it because it isn't that big or necessary for D&D but I thought I would reach out to you anyways) My thought was to build accessory bones, like dragon bones, to put in the ground for decorations, like a large ribcage that a group of goblins could hide in, or a stone henge type thing made out of bones, maybe a huge skull with tusks that you hide in. The idea is that you could do loads of things and have a lot of creativity with bones to play with, in a desert set up there could be bones lying on the ground to show the lack of water, I just think it would be a nice touch for decoration and provide extra gameplay usage. It's just an idea though, thanks for reading,
bye.
So glad you're OK. I made it through Covid & have been dealing with the afteraffects, too. Stay strong, man. Your lava game is on point.
Omg so happy to see you back! Love your work and style, glad to see you healthy
Thanks Brandon!
Your craftsmanship earned a subscription your dethklok reference earned a like
Glad you’re back! Been a while since I’ve been on your channel….you’re just getting better and better! Well done!
Thanks Paul!
I can't get over how beautiful the end product looks! Great job on these!
Thanks man! 😁
Glad you're feeling better!!
WOW!! This is an insane build. Lots of work but the end result is spectacular! Nicely done!
Thanks man! 😁
Even unlit, these look pretty awesome!
Strong comeback! Welcome back! Been missing your videos. Glad to hear you have recovered.
Thanks man :)
aaah Matt... my most successful and dramatic build was my lava terrain set, people still find me through that episode, but man I so wish that I had incorporated lighting! This video really makes me want to dig back into my original build and redo it 😂... Always an inspiration, especially these days as I realise a lot of my earlier builds are not as modular as my naive earlier self believed, you are indeed a master in the field of this particular part of the hobby... literally carving new ways to inspire us.
Why milliput? Because the last thing you need after long COVID is cyanide gas.
I’m glad to hear you are feeling better and I’m excited to see all of the new builds coming out
THAT 😂 the last thing I need is more illness 😬😄
Epic work as always Matt! Love your work :)
Hey man, thanks! :) nice to hear from you again 😂
Awesome. I can't wait till I get a bit more free time/space to make some of this stuff
Incredible build Matt! Glad you're feeling better. You got the gears turning so thanks so much for sharing!
Hi Matt, glad to see you're felling better! Keep the vids coming!
Beautiful work. I wish model making for cinematography was more popular. I think you’d be great at it.
Hey, if I get enough support on the patreon I'm sure as hell buying a probe lense for awesome 'first person' shots 😂
Double Extra Super Amazing as always. Sorry to hear about your health. Hope you continue to improve and are back to normal soon. great line about the unattended toddler, made me laugh!
Thank clay, glad it got someone 😂
Love the new tiles. Gotta work on my mountain tiles now.
Hope they serve you well! :)
"2mm short of a half inch..." I love the mixing of units! :)
Beautiful pieces. Keep up the good work. Oh... and stay away for the plague.
When I saw your video pop up I literally said out loud “So he’s not dead!” Lol
Sorry to hear you got long Covid, but glad your feeling better. Keep up the good work. I always love watching your video!
Thanks Mike!
That pun with the mat finish at the end caught me off guard :D :D
Haha! I love that so many people liked that 😂
Welcome back! Im glad you are feeling better. Thanks for sharing this fantastic design :D
Thanks man :)
I am happy that you are on the road to recovery, and very happy you are back. Good to see you Matt.
Definitely on the way, thanks Robert :)
that metalocalypse meme got me to sub
Great result! as Always, but Very capturing rendering!! Exceptionally immersive!
My hands are far too shaky to craft, but I really enjoy watching your process and listening to the commentary.
I have watched many modeling videos from many channels. The most significant difference between other channels and your channel is that most other youtubers build models to impress. Your models are built to be played with. This makes your videos so much more enjoyable and engaging.
I currently do not have the money to become a patron member, but I would like to make a suggestion for your next scenery video.
Could you make a large ship, with multiple decks that minis can be placed on? You could also make two ships to simulate ship to ship combat or boarding actions. I would love to see what techniques and tricks you would use!
Thank you for the kind words man!
Ships are a long term goal, but not anytime soon unfortunately - I don't have enough funding (yet) to hire people to help me get videos out faster! :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial Great to hear! I wish you the best!
Just got onto your videos after finding interest in D&D playing Pathfinder (PC) - I am taken back at how amazing your videos and terrain builds are.
Another amazing build. Happy you are feeling better. I have to admit I was worried and was hoping you got busy with work or got a super-secret build for WoTC or something fun.
i love your videos, you are a great inspiration for my builds and videos so thank you very much!
Glad I could help man! 😁
great to see you back man, look forward to your uploads
Just incredible!
Amazing! Simply amazing! everyone here at the HQ just loved how you created the elements and the final piece is brilliant 😎 Loved to see some characters from the "A Light in the Shadows" bundle there and how you chose to display them. Congrats on the excellent video!
First of all, I'm glad you've recovered! Secondly... This is amazing! Again!
You make it all look so easy, when we all know it really isn't! 😂😂
The lazy bones in me looks at it all and thinks... Is there an easier way to do this and still keep it looking that fabulous? I have yet to discover an easier answer to what you do!
Keep up the great work, wonderful to have you back.
Thanks Sparks! 😁
Yeah it takes some effort, but you can cut it down if you don't have time by just accepting some losses of details :)
Amazing lava effect!
glad you're feeling better thanks again for another great video
Fantastic work !👍

I have been on the fringes watching many different crafters share their talents - but to me you are in the top 3 of those I watch. Thank you for another amazing video. I am also very glad you are back after battling the dreaded VID monster. Hope you continue to feel better!
Thanks James! Definitely on the mend, slowly but surely :)
Wonderful!

Amazing work! Glad to see your feeling better, welcome back. You were truly missed. Love the new updated lava with the techniques and the light boxes. Really enjoy your modularity of these titles.
Definitely more lightbox stuff to come in the future...
Ok this is amazing
Your videos are incredible. I don’t have the materials to make most of the things in your videos, but I watch them with hope and for entertainment. Keep it up.
This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time 🤯
