  • So you want to make some water terrain! But do you need a lake or a river? Is it tropical and clear or swampy and muddy? What if you could have your water and its coasts and banks with one easy tile system?
    Easy? Yes. Delicate? Also, yes.

    I wanted to pin a couple of updates here thanks to some helpful comments!
    - Multiple people pointed me toward cut-resistant gloves for just this sort of carving safety. I will likely pick up a pair myself!
    - More alternatives to glass panes:
    --- Acrylic sheets at various sizes on Amazon
    --- Plexiglass cut to size from your local hardware store
    --- Acetate sheets (like for overhead projectors)
    --- Large plastic sheet sourced from a poster frame
    One thing I didn't mention in the video is that I found having a transparent panel with some thickness increased the visual quality of the wave texture against the coloured paper underneath. Having some distance allows for shadows and a better reflection and water effect overall. And don't forget to store these with parchment or wax paper in between!

    You can use some wet/dry sandpaper around 220-320 grit down the sides of the glass. Use it wet so you don't end up with glass dust in the air. It'll make it less likely to cut you, remove some of the flaws that tend to act as break points, and make the cleanup with a razor a bit easier.

    @5:00 cut resistant gloves are fairly cost effective, and absolutely worth looking in to if you're doing this sort of carving regularly. THEY ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR PROPER CAUTION, but they're a decent piece of preventative safety on top of being sensible and careful.
    Making sure your knife is properly sharp means you're using less force to make cuts as well, so stop and strop or hone your blade every dozen or so decent sized cuts, or when your blade starts to slow down when carving.

    Holy hand-grenades @raecheldoes this is such a fantastic video! The water texture is awesome, and you've explained the cliff/corner/curves/crawls so clearly here. I've been using this approach with corner and curve pieces for ages, but seeing how well cliffs and crawls work is going to have be magnetizing all my old tiles just to make it all work. PLEASE KEEP IT UP, you're forging gold with each of these videos!

    • @WilSisney
      @WilSisney Před rokem

      Also that freaking flocking strategy is brilliant! There's probably a better term for making adjoining tiles connect cleanly in a visual way, but I just call it tessellation. Getting physical tessellation is easy - you just have to make your foam join. Getting visual tessellation is SO hard and the flocking approach you use is blowing my mind right now.

    This video reminded me of a time I hold deep nostalgia for, playing with the Total Annihilation: Kingdoms map editor as a young lad having my first experiences with map making and modding the games I played, fitting all the neat tiles together and assembling tiny worlds just for myself to experience. The water and islet tiles were some of my favourites and one of the maps I spent the most time decorating was a castle flanked on three sides with a large horseshoe-shaped lake, with a small hamlet huddled among expansive fields of pumpkins and wheat, I must've spent a couple of hours just doing set dressing on a tiny sheltered lagoon among the fields surrounded by a dense cloak of pine trees with a little clearing where a couple of vagrants were camped. It probably wasn't a very good map to actually play but it didn't need to be, I probably spent more time in the map editor than I did playing the game.

      Thank you! And I know! It's a weird curse to be blessed with success early in my youtube journey, but I'm gearing up to take it more seriously, so I'm looking forward to what I do in the future too! :P

    Awesome, loving your videos - planning on applying it to wargaming as well as DnD - the water effect is incredible - I guess ideally all your tiles need to sit on a panel/support once you have created the water, otherwise they will just water-fall off?

    Loving my modular terrains! at this rate we will have a whole collection of biomes to match and play with thanks to your tutorials! if i could leave a suggestion, Can we have deserts at some point? I play Tallarns and i would love me some cool ideas to make modular deserts interesting, appart from just sand tiles, and you are pretty qualified to make that happen!

    Thanks for the inspiration. I wanted to a static Warhammer board. But I thought static would be boring and also said of pouring alot of resin.
    With this idea can still make make water at the lowest level in my jungle / industrial board. Thanks alot :)

      And yes! I based it off of Black Magic Craft's gaming table he made a while back. The lowered center definitely helps to see more of the terrain when we play.

    I really like your approach to water. I hate the degassing smells and expense of resin water that you have to finish off this way any way. Enjoying your channel.

      Yes I find resin pretty intimidating to work with on such large scales, but you're right, the smell is pretty heavy too. Glad to offer an alternative!

    Really good video!!! I'm going to stick to plexi for my stuff, and I'll start off with a 2x3 sheet from a poster frame. I'll do smaller ones if needed, but prob not. Again, well done!!!

    I am planning a modular hill set.
    And seeing your tutorial I just noticed the same set could be used as coast by just replacing the "valley base" with a "water base"

    They have safety gloves just for this kind of thing. It's a woven mesh of some kind of very durable cord. They are not hot unless worn in very hot environments. I used one in a factory environment for 20 years and the only time I cut myself was the day I took it off because I was a fool. Get a glove, I don't care how experienced you are with a knife, it happens to the best of us!

    Hey Rae'ch, whatcha playin'? Nice disguise spell you got there, but I can _sea_ through it.
    Really nice vid, I dig the modularity of the water layer. You could maybe try slapping some ledstrips under it, with a diffuser sheet for some glowing green poison river, or something.
    The water and the land tiles together look pretty cool. Keep it up! 👍

    Hi! Also an RP Archive fanboy here! I've been thinking down a similar vein, but using acetate sheets/OHP transparencies rather than glass as they are cheaper and less breakable. I've also done a light dry brush of white on wave textures like this for a little foam, but perhaps that's more of a sea than a river texture.

    • @raecheldoes
      @raecheldoes  Před rokem +1

      Yes! After doing more research, acrylic and plexi can be decently affordable. I do find that the thicker the material, the more depth it gives the water. I would definitely like to experiment with doing the light dry brushing in the future too.

    These are cool, have you considered using tape on the edges so you don't have to directly scrape the edges of the glass?
