  • Hi friends! So in today's video we are getting a little controversial and talking about beauty gurus and beauty guru trends that I feel fly under the radar as a result of bigger influencers being so problematic. I really wanted this video to be a conversation about why these things go unchecked and at what point is an influencer considered "Problematic"? Again this video is not meant to bully anyone or to tear anyone down, the people who I talked about are more to serve as examples! I hope you guys like this video and I will see you in the next one!

    I think another issue that doesn’t get talked about enough is influencers promoting potentially dangerous health advice to their young audience. I know people call out the Kardashians for promoting diarrhea teas and stuff, but I see so many similar things on YT and IG. I think there are way too many young people being told that this vitamin, or this shake, or this wrap will cure all their issues, and it’s so so dangerous. These people have no place giving medical advice.

And she is also for reducing animal products. Like eating meat every two weeks and from a farm where animals are treated well. I say that because sometimes vegans shame people who are eating animal products but fly by plane, buy H&M clothes and plenty avocados while living in a cold climate. • @jht3fougifh393
      @jht3fougifh393 Před 5 lety +13

      If it's in terms of objective information, I definitely agree. However, free speech is very important & certainly shouldn't be downplayed. & everyone is entitled to their opinion, as well.
      Frankly, people can think what they want, so long as they aren't promoting their subjective opinion as objective fact. & no direct calls for harm/ threats, of course. I don't agree with "potentially harmful" things not being considered free speech, as that is purely subjective & impossible to properly gauge, let alone regulate.
      But yeah, it sucks when you see, for instance, people promoting pseudoscience as fact. It's really common in the beauty community, actually. Parabens, for instance. There is zero proof, at all, of parabens causing any harm to people. Yet the beauty brands went along with it, just to shut up the sketchy groups that pushed these scare mongering agendas. It's pretty horrible. Collagen is also perfectly innocent, and alcohol almost always is (though not in all cases, just, the way people act like anything alcohol in the ingredients make it bad is cringey, & it's SUPER common, especially with the most popular "gurus"). Then there's the idea that "organic" aka "natural" ingredients are somehow better. It's such a common fallacy that it's got its own term - appeal to nature. It's pretty silly.
      There's more, but yeah. Point is, I feel you.
      Regardless, have a good one!

    • @nuclearlioness2367

      kitty kat beauty theres lots of medical problems that arise from people getting abortions. From hemorrhaging, depression, to somethings parts of fetus’s are left in the mother (leading to shock as the part decomposes in the body). There’s a lot of side affects and even in 2019, an abortion pill killed 24 women and injured thousands. So let’s not kid ourselves that abortions are always safe, they are not always. They can go wrong, and it’s dangerous to women to pretend it is safe. Because for some women, the safest thing is to just have the baby. Because our bodies are made to have children and is not meant to have the fetus sucked/chopped out. I’m just saying because of how this comment is phrased-from a purely medical perspective, you have to acknowledge all sides. Abortion isn’t a pleasant nor a glorious procedure. It is messy and can be life altering. And leave women with health problems for the rest of their lives. Not saying a child going full term wouldn’t either, but like I said, it is very dangerous to pretend you are hurting women by not supporting abortion when abortions are hurting women as well. It’s not so black and white.

    • @royalniffler9898
      @royalniffler9898 Před 4 lety +240

      Nuclear Lioness Actually many abortions don’t leave women with health problems. Unless they’re done at home, which is what’s being encouraged by outlawing safe abortions

    • @nuclearlioness2367
      @nuclearlioness2367 Před 4 lety +41

      I’m sorry, but that’s simply not true. Once abortion was legalized, the numbers skyrocketed. That’s why, a few years ago, more black babies were aborted than born in New York. Numbers drop drastically when it is illegal, and deaths of botched illegal abortions are very low. Botched, unsafe abortions are only high numbers because in many underdeveloped countries women that have sex outside of marriage can be punished, or worse, killed. Women in the states do not face death in the US, so numbers of illegal abortions would not be high just like how it was before they were legal. Now, as I’ve said, many doctors including planned parenthood try to hush hush the actual numbers of women that experience negative health affects. Including bleeding, uncomfortable walking, and many women felt like they were pushed into the abortion by the doctor. There’s a lot of stories you can look at of women, and even an ex planned parenthood director, that show how they push abortions for money and not truly not talking with the woman to discuss all options. It is a lot more traumatic to watch a mother cry and regret killing her baby than many realize.

      @@nuclearlioness2367 I am a L&D nurse, and I have to say, people really underestimate how complicated pregnancy could be, and for MANY women, how life-threatening it is (for mom and fetus). I have seen many women die after a completely uncomplicated pregnancy from an amniotic fluid embolism, to other issues that are actually common like eclampsia and diabetes. Not saying pregnancy is unsafe, but it is an increasingly risky state for mom and baby and it's not as simple and happy as people make it seem. Pushing a baby out of your body or having a c-section is a traumatizing event for your body. Things that were never wrong with you can be an issue during pregnancy and can be more difficult to manage. Not everyone wants to be a mom, and that's okay. EVERY single surgery you go under is risky and has the same complications of bleeding, pain, infection, etc. Those are also very common complications of birth that no one talks about. Postpartum hemorrhage and infection are some of the most common things I see in my practice and are a true emergency and if not treated quickly, end up in a baby with no mommy. Abortion is actually a very simple procedure and this demonization of it is really sad. There are also abortions that you can take with tocolytic agents (the same medicine they give you during labor to induce contractions) or with Misoprostol. I have met so many women who are now moms that said they were glad they had their abortion because they weren't ready at the time to be a mom. I have also met many women who regretted being pregnant and not terminating the pregnancy. All of these feelings are normal and extremely personal. There are always bad stories to everything, but this taboo around abortion is really insane when the same complications happen with pregnancy and worse. If you don't believe in abortions that's fine! you don't need to get one. But I will never not support another persons right to do what they want with their body. Whether its getting an abortion or becoming a mother. These complications from abortions actually commonly occur in pregnancy and the postpartum period. The US actually has really high rates of maternal demise compared to other countries and no one talks about that. If you actually care about women's well being, allowing them to have a choice over their body and advocating having access to safe medical care is a great step towards making a change.

Plus, we have the highest survival rate of premature babies. Medicine is highly advanced in the USA, and compared to how many births happen, death is super rare. So I’m sorry, but you numbers are plain wrong.

I think it is incredibly problematic when white CZcamsrs put products in their monthly favorites videos and say “this has a horrible shade range but it’s such an amazing product.” If you actually want brands to make a change, don’t support or advertise their products if they are not inclusive. Don’t pretend you care about inclusivity and then make a big deal of how great the product is and how much you love it because you are privileged enough to be able to find a matching shade. Everyone shitted on tarte because it was trendy at the time but didn’t call out the other brands that had just as bad of a range. Rant over 😊

      danky yanky I think it’s more so, if you want to use it don’t bitch and whinge about the shad range. Like if you actually care about increasing shade ranges, take a stand. If you don’t, don’t. But don’t tout that you want shade ranges fixed while still supporting the brand.

    What I find problematic is how many channels promote fash fashion and over-consumption in this day and age. For example Niki and Gabi have some sort of a buying challenge in almost every video that doesn’t even serve a purpose and those clothes and products will likely never be worn or used again. They are obviously not the only ones, but since you talked about them I thought I would mention this.

    My two cents: If your name is the brand then that person is the brand- there is no separating them. Jeffery star is Jeffery star cosmetics, Kat Von D is Kat Von D makeup. As far as I know they don't have personal and separate company accts = so they are inserting their personal opinions on to their products/ line. I have no idea who owns Urban Decay, nor does their owner toss out their personal opinions on their corporate acct.
    As for problematic brands being reviewed... up to the reviewer's choice I suppose- no matter how much you like a particular new palette- I wont buy it if I don't like the associations with it. With ONE exception Kat Von D- I believe she should be cancelled completely- no reviews anything. Her opinion, and it isn't even her having the opinion it was her enabling/ validating all these other antivaxxers. I know we are all sick of this drama- BUT this is beyond problematic- this is Health concern, our (US) number of measles cases is at a record number- it was eliminated in 2000! Someone has to pay for all of the "free" products that gets given to "influencers"- and its us. The consumer. And many influencers are really unappreciative of the free products they get. I ONLY buy indie brands that don't do PR. Makeup is for every one- not just for the priviledged few.

    Yeah, I had to unsubscribe from Sarah Therese because, frankly, I don't appreciate her preaching and judging. If you consider your life a walk alongside Jesus Christ and want your decisions to reflect your interpretation of what that should be, cool. I'm a godless heathen and I can 100% step to that. But some her views - such as pitying women who reach 30 without breeding and and considering herself more "productive" than the rest of her generation simply because she's a married plural mother - are indicators that she really needs to stay in her lane. It doesn't surprise me that she'd spread false information about a deeply personal and potentially traumatic choice that no one, NO-ONE, wants to make. Not every woman wants to be a baby factory, honey. Just because your religion assigned that purpose to you, doesn't mean the rest of us need to play those reindeer games.

      Say My Name. If they supported life, they would give a damn about the pregnant woman and not just her fetus. If they supported life, they would educate themselves about pregnancy and issues surrounding the decision to have an abortion instead of ignorantly pushing misinformation. But all we hear about is “the unborn child” when the truth is that it is the possibility of a child, not an actual child. A fetus is not more important than the woman carrying it, because she already exists in this world and her thoughts & actions have meaning. So, if you’re not considering the effects of pushing your beliefs on to these women, then you only care about the birth of her child, not her life or her child’s life. Where are the policies of the “pro-life” community intended to support these women and their children after they have given birth? Because from what I’ve seen, everything is focused on forcing birth, not encouraging a good quality of life for all.

    • @lelnope30
      @lelnope30 Před 5 lety +30

      @@danaeddins5590 That's also because a lot of people are aware of their health issues and abort quickly before it becomes a problem. @danaeddins5590 Před 5 lety +2

      Lel Nope I get what you’re saying. I was specifically mentioning late term abortion since roe v wade says abortions after fetal viability cannot be restricted when medically necessary. My point was that it’s apparently statistically rare for that to be the case in the third trimester. (I stay far from twitter, so I don’t know the context of the original statement). I guess across gestation, that percentage would be different. According to a Guttmacher Institute study, 11% of US women undergoing abortion stated medical necessity for themselves OR the fetus as the reason they sought abortion. That figure was for abortions performed at any point in the pregnancy. It did not break down the percentage as to fetal abnormalities/maternal health.

    • @unusunus4613
      @unusunus4613 Před 5 lety +18

      @@danaeddins5590 It's still 1 out of every 100 women that need abortions for medical necessities. That's a lot of women. That would be hundreds of thousands of women *needing* abortions. And there's always pregnancies that need to be aborted due to attaching onto the fallopian tube instead of in the uterus. This would occur much much earlier. So basically even if It's not after that many weeks it can still be an abortion out of medical necessity and there's always other necessities for abortion like financial and mental.
      Just read your most recent comment, if it's really 11 percent that's 11 out of every 100 women. It's more than 1 tenth of women physically needing abortions. I wouldn't say that's rare or use it as a way to down play the importance of abortion. That statistic shows how needed it really is.

    As for the mean personalities, this is my theory based on what I observed while working at a PR firm. It's possible the beauty guru's saying horrible things on Twitter are horrible people IRL and that's why they need the validation on SM to fill the empty void in their soul..but it could also be them trying too hard for "shock value" in order to be noticed ("bad publicity is still publicity"). It's no different than when a politician or business person cracks a non-PC joke thinking they are being really edgy but it backfires and they have to issue an apology the next day (if they aren't fired). Generally, speaking professional comedians like George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, writers at The Onion, etc. are the only public figures who can get away and even enjoy success when they deviating from PC protocols and there's a reason for that: they've spent years honing and perfecting their craft.

I personally have no issue with people using products from 'problematic' brands/influencers and see a distinction between using the makeup and supporting that individual and their actions (though I can definitely see why people think otherwise), but not disclosing sponsorships (or even trying to hide them or lie about them) is really annoying for me, whether it's smaller or larger influencers. I know it's slightly off topic as she's a bigger influencer, but I really think that Nikkie Tutorials flew under the radar when she lied about that sponge. A lot of smaller influencers get away with problematic behaviour, but I think a lot of larger influencers do because they're popular/likeable/talented too and a lot of behaviour is excused because of who they are.

    In the UK and Europe influencers are getting into trouble for not declaring ads. They even have to say in Europe if the product was PR. The first ones publicly shamed in regular news media all ran with 'I didn't know what the rules were'. In future there will be more severe punishments issued, publishing their names allows their audience to know they were lied to. When you spoke previously about the big beauty gurus I know you forgot about Nikkie Tutorials (Tati has never made it into the top 3 gurus) maybe you don't watch her, but she now has symbols for ads, PR, and bought it myself. Which is a really easy way to deal with the problem and keep things clear with subscribers.

Too faced has had issues, huda beauty has had issues, kat von d, jeffree star, tarte, lime crime, i mean, i could go on and on. Even bigger very well known drug store brands have had their issues. So even though, i understand the thought process behind wanting all beauty gurus to avoid all "problematic brands", it may very well become impossible to entirely avoid those brands.

I’ve become totally obsessed with your videos! you’re style of commentary is something to be admired and praised. you clearly do your research and although your videos come off as pretty drama centric, I appreciate that you showcase a very tactful way of going about your rants :) You deserve your clout, recognition and growth in your channel. your honesty and is SOOOO refreshing and genuine :) keep doing what your doing cause you’re doing it right! ❤️

    Love the sexy pale vampy goth look
    Also I'm learning the pretty people of CZcams are endlessly problematic

    Another excellent video Hannah! My entire family are medical professionals and to see these lies being spread about abortion just enrages all of us. Sarah Therese is also of the mindset that men are above women in every way and it’s our job to serve them 😡 I also agree I will never buy a product from KVD, or Too Faced as examples. People do support their ignorance with their dollars. These are important issues and I swear, If I had daughters I’d want them to be just like you and Zara (dishwashingliqwid) I’m so happy you started a channel, this is a special place 💗

    I watch most of Rachel's videos and I have never heard her say anything really political....

    Personally I believe that if your still using a problematic palette or makeup product that is okay bc it’s money and you don’t wanna waste it. BUT if you are still buying there stuff after they are cancelled or whatever or promoting their makeup that isn’t okay

    i don’t think that all opinions should be tolerated. if your opinion marginalizes and dehumanizes people, i don’t think it should be given space.

      feministfairyprincess uuuum, If you don’t think somebody should be given space because their opinion differs from yours regardless of the specifics, that IS marginalizing and dehumanizing somebody. You just contradicted yourself and you sound like a hypocrite. PROBLAMATIC!!!!!

      Again, I don't think it makes her a horrible person, but the way she talked about it really rubbed me the wrong way! Glad I could inform you 😊

      @@gigi2k326 she's just really enthusiastic. She's a lot like Tati where if she doesn't like a product she will always bring up good things about other products the brand makes to even it out. It actually has lead me to a lot of favorite products. :)
