Ukrainian forces struggle to hold back Russian assaults in the east | DW News

- Ukrainian forces are struggling to hold back a wave of Russian assaults in the east. Moscow says it has captured several hundred square kilometers of Ukrainian territory since the beginning of the year.
Kyiv says it is suffering from a lack of soldiers and delays in deliveries from its Western allies. The shortages have allowed the Russians to advance in many places, like in Avdiivka. Now, they have their sights set on Chasiv Yar. A Ukrainian retreat there could jeopardize the defense of the entire region. DW correspondent Nick Connolly reports from the ground.

@@Booz2020 Chinese lives matters too! So no big deal.
The main talking point of the narrative nowadays is "The West (US) have taken too much time to provide aid because of the lack of the will. If there had been more political resolve to help Ukraine, it would have changed the outcome entirely". This is being repeated time after time in preparation for the humiliating defeat: "Republicans are to blame!". This is a fallacy, however. The truth is much simpler. First of all, MONEY is not the issue. Europe is still rich enough to produce an arbitrary amount of cash at any moment while the US can just print money, which they do.
The issue is that there is not much left to give. Warehouses have been emptied of shells, long-range missiles, AD missiles, what have you. AD systems in huge quantities (relative to overall existing count) have been sent, tanks, artillery systems, fighting vehicles. All that and then some has been donated. Is one stops to consider the ridiculous amount of support that has already been provided, support that amounts to many hundreds of billions, they will realize that the lack of resolve is not the issue. The issue is that NATO countries are physically incapable of giving more, physically incapable of maintaining supplies at required levels and that the efficiency of most equipment has been dubious - no wunderwaffe in sight. That combined with questionable command decisions of the NATO generals as well as Ukrainian leadership that resulted in horrendous loss of Ukrainian lives, lives that cannot be replaced lead to this unredeemable failure. This is an unadulterated debacle of the western military system and policies, and Republicans have little to do with this.
Very well explained
I agree with much of what you said. Ukraine's decision to attack a heavily defended part of Zaporizia and fight to the bitter end in Bakhmut cost them thousands of needless deaths. Ukraine's failure to build robust defense lines like the Russians did in the south is coming back to haunt them; however, they would not have lost nearly as much ground if they had received if the Republicans in Congress had not sat on the aid for almost six months.
@@fr2ncm9 I cannot really agree. A couple of points to make. The US has clearly been supplying Ukraine with shells and missiles outside of the Congress's authorization of 61B. They have admitted to having shipped ATACMS missiles back in March.
Now that the money has been approved, have you looked at the contents of the most recent aid package? It is really nothing that will make any difference. ATACMS are supposed to be the highlight yet the Russians are shooting the vast majority of them down. Even if one or two do get through, what difference can they possibly make? And mind you, there is a rather limited supply of these anyway, we are talking low triple-digits at best. Or is a dozen of desert-camo Bradleys going to become an impregnable wall?
My points is that there is not much the US can give to Ukraine to use. They can only escalate by sending their own troops which would be disastrous for the US. Vietnam will look like a kids' play by comparison.
Ask yourself, if Biden, Ursula or whoever runs the show were presented with the proposal: "You need to dis out XXX billion (make it a trillion if you like) dollars and that will defeat Russia and bring Putin to his knees.", would they have not jumped at it in a blink of an eye? - They would. You know they would. Unfortunately for them though, money alone cannot win this war.
I would go as far as say that the Republicans were actually making Biden a favour by delaying the authorization: during all that time the administration had a perfect excuse - "it is the Republicans!". Now that the money has been authorized, there is no longer an excuse for the continuing failure. In the end, what were 61B going to do that the already spent 400-500B did not?
US makes some 500-550 Patriot missiles a year. Some 30-40K 155mm shells a month. ATACMS are no longer produced. M777 are no longer produced.
Yep pretty accurate. No one seems to understand that Russia considered Ukraine joint NATO as an exetential threat to their security and will pay any price to remove it. He blew up the biggest chance of negotiations with Russia
What is there to negotiate? Zelensky has said that negotiations can start after the Russians pull their forces back to their side of the border. Until then, what is there to negotiate?
The comedian's making a joke out of russia
@@nicolasolton I think Ukranians have every right to want to return to pre-war borders. Unfortunately, that's just an unrealistic outcome at this point. I think Zelensky would've been better off reviewing Finland's Winter War against USSR as an example - even though Finland put up an amazing defense, they still decided to give up some territory to avoid a long protracted war.
@@wenerjy Not really. The PMC Junta has only historic right to Lutsk and Lvov regions.
@@nicolasolton Lack of realistic thinking ... But I am sure, when USA tells Zelensky that he has to go to the negotiation table he will do ... and the outcome will be "Land for peace"
It may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal.

You'd think Ukraine would surrender by now.
Volume off, Thanks DW News.
Send German troops
yep they should free their country from usa ocupation
Macron will send the Legion if and when Ukraine makes such a request.
@@nicolasolton it will be a spectacle that will end in tears
Nah, German troops should stay where they are.

Kuddos for real reporting
Germany should have sent the $60 billion a long time ago
They dont struggle to hold back. The are falling back. The struggle seems to be over
after 400 billion, and they are still retreating, of course the US will send another 600 billion😂😂😂
I wonder where those billions are going. Not into the battle field it seems. Maybe into some peoples pockets
@@Greenbay-bn3yk Mostly back to US defense contractors' pockets. We're giving them "money" to buy weapons from us, and since defense contractors are public companies they need to make a profit.
A lot of money also "disappeared" ! There was even an investigation by USA including the CIA chief came on this to Ukraine. There were also numbers on this in US media, cannot remember exactly. Ukraine is still second place after Russia at the European Corruption Index !
NATO will continue to support Ukraine as this war is cheap. $ 60bn for the US was less than 10% of the annual US defence budget. Meanwhile Russia is at 30% of its entire Gov budget to finance this war. For Russia its costly.
Is easy to print more money...we all pay this war throught elevate inflation
Fear of the bear??
i don't understand how Ukraine think they can go to war using donations.
The west is not operating a war economy, so this will be an ongoing struggle, whilst that remains the case. This could ultimately be the achilleas heel of this defence effort.
It`s not 60 billions. Get your numbers right
Chasir yah has already been captured
Fight your own wars ! We don’t wanna help you !!!
Now American is seening Russia their prize of 60 billion dollars of America weapons 😂😂
