  • Ukrainian forces are struggling to hold back a wave of Russian assaults in the east. Moscow says it has captured several hundred square kilometers of Ukrainian territory since the beginning of the year.
    Kyiv says it is suffering from a lack of soldiers and delays in deliveries from its Western allies. The shortages have allowed the Russians to advance in many places, like in Avdiivka. Now, they have their sights set on Chasiv Yar. A Ukrainian retreat there could jeopardize the defense of the entire region. DW correspondent Nick Connolly reports from the ground.

    The main talking point of the narrative nowadays is "The West (US) have taken too much time to provide aid because of the lack of the will. If there had been more political resolve to help Ukraine, it would have changed the outcome entirely". This is being repeated time after time in preparation for the humiliating defeat: "Republicans are to blame!". This is a fallacy, however. The truth is much simpler. First of all, MONEY is not the issue. Europe is still rich enough to produce an arbitrary amount of cash at any moment while the US can just print money, which they do.
    The issue is that there is not much left to give. Warehouses have been emptied of shells, long-range missiles, AD missiles, what have you. AD systems in huge quantities (relative to overall existing count) have been sent, tanks, artillery systems, fighting vehicles. All that and then some has been donated. Is one stops to consider the ridiculous amount of support that has already been provided, support that amounts to many hundreds of billions, they will realize that the lack of resolve is not the issue. The issue is that NATO countries are physically incapable of giving more, physically incapable of maintaining supplies at required levels and that the efficiency of most equipment has been dubious - no wunderwaffe in sight. That combined with questionable command decisions of the NATO generals as well as Ukrainian leadership that resulted in horrendous loss of Ukrainian lives, lives that cannot be replaced lead to this unredeemable failure. This is an unadulterated debacle of the western military system and policies, and Republicans have little to do with this.

      I agree with much of what you said. Ukraine's decision to attack a heavily defended part of Zaporizia and fight to the bitter end in Bakhmut cost them thousands of needless deaths. Ukraine's failure to build robust defense lines like the Russians did in the south is coming back to haunt them; however, they would not have lost nearly as much ground if they had received if the Republicans in Congress had not sat on the aid for almost six months.

    • @libertarianbydefault
      @libertarianbydefault Před 12 dny

      @@fr2ncm9 I cannot really agree. A couple of points to make. The US has clearly been supplying Ukraine with shells and missiles outside of the Congress's authorization of 61B. They have admitted to having shipped ATACMS missiles back in March.
      Now that the money has been approved, have you looked at the contents of the most recent aid package? It is really nothing that will make any difference. ATACMS are supposed to be the highlight yet the Russians are shooting the vast majority of them down. Even if one or two do get through, what difference can they possibly make? And mind you, there is a rather limited supply of these anyway, we are talking low triple-digits at best. Or is a dozen of desert-camo Bradleys going to become an impregnable wall?
      My points is that there is not much the US can give to Ukraine to use. They can only escalate by sending their own troops which would be disastrous for the US. Vietnam will look like a kids' play by comparison.
      Ask yourself, if Biden, Ursula or whoever runs the show were presented with the proposal: "You need to dis out XXX billion (make it a trillion if you like) dollars and that will defeat Russia and bring Putin to his knees.", would they have not jumped at it in a blink of an eye? - They would. You know they would. Unfortunately for them though, money alone cannot win this war.
      I would go as far as say that the Republicans were actually making Biden a favour by delaying the authorization: during all that time the administration had a perfect excuse - "it is the Republicans!". Now that the money has been authorized, there is no longer an excuse for the continuing failure. In the end, what were 61B going to do that the already spent 400-500B did not?
      US makes some 500-550 Patriot missiles a year. Some 30-40K 155mm shells a month. ATACMS are no longer produced. M777 are no longer produced.
