I'm an old, bitter retired cop.
Some time ago I was in the local supermarket when the staff tried to stop a guy with a large bag full of coffee jars that he hadn't paid for from stealing them.
They were trying to get the bag off him but he wouldn't let go and was screaming threats, I asked the girl at the till if she had called 999, and she said yes, but they had no resources and they're not coming.
I'm no hero, but I stood looking at this guy until he looked back and said,
"Who do you ********* think you're looking at.
I told him that I was the person who was going to subject him to a Citizens Arrest and drag him out of the shop by his ears if he didn't back off.
He finally ran away, left the bag, escaped completely and I was warned by the Police who finally got there regarding my conduct.

For years now policing has been undermined , as a retired police officer, 1971 to 2001, the Police took no nonsense and policed without fear or favour. As a Metropolitan Police Force, we provided a service and a physical presence on the streets by walking beats or panda cars. When some clown decided to rename it a Service, it then provided no service whatever, simple things like people locked out of house or car, , alarms and many other things the public wanted the Police to do. Plus we were proactive. During my level one public order duties, we trained for a multitude of scenarios . Today Police are just reactive and it is no wonder crime is rife. Pubilc order seems to consist of standing around and chatting in brightly coloured baseball caps and tabards . The incident at Peckham, shows what the Police have become because of continued interference by politicians. That incident could have been sorted quickly by robust policing, clearing the street and allowing the bus to depart. Any criticism of Police action should have been met with The Commissioner standing up and defending his officers and the LAW. But of course Rowley is a wet and scared stiff. So in short, you get what you pay for
