Most dystopian stories seem to revolve around an apocalyptic future or have an overtly authoritarian government. What I loved about Demolition Man is that it was much more subtle with its social commentary, first showing the benefits of submission up front and gradually revealing the corruption. That more than anything makes the story relevant and keeps it from being dated.

According to the book “I Am Jackie Chan: My Life in Action”, Stallone had at one point asked Jackie to play the villain role that ultimately went to Wesley Snipes (at the time Jackie was coerced by his manager, Willie Chan, to give the States another go despite his four disastrous attempts about a decade earlier). Jackie turned it down as he “didn’t feel right about that role” (he had mentioned just a few paragraphs earlier in that section of the book that he turned down an appearance in the Michael Douglas-starring film “Black Rain”, because he did not want to be in a film that made Asians look bad and where he would be playing a bad guy - and he HAD played baddies earlier in his career and it did not go down too well).

Really nice video, a really great review. I watched this movie for the 20th time (at least) yesterday, a classic.
Just a shame that you didn't mention that Demolition Man is some kind of blockbuster version of Brave New World.
There are so many clues. The book's written by Aldous Huxley in early 1930's, and the name of the female hero is Lenina.
The story depicts a clean/shiny future in which anyone has to do what he was programmed to do when he was born (as a test-tube baby).
John is raised in the Savage Reservation and is often called "the Savage" just like John Spartan.
Even Simon Phoenix says to Spartan "What a Brave new world. Sorry you have to leave."
    But still a great review.

Great review as always Ollie. I've always been a big fan of Demolition Man and this made me want to watch it again. You know I've NEVER seen the Pizza Hut shots in any version of the movie??? Weird. I laughed out loud at the three seashells explanation. I've never seen that before lol. Great upload buddy, very well researched and edited together. Liked and favourited!!

The restaurant branding was confusing to hear about later, but Sandra Bullock was interviewed and asked about the seashells a year ago. She said it must have been a bidet and a Japanese toilet. Is funny that the question of still being asked so long after the initial movie release!

What an amazing film ! One of Sly's best, he gives a great performance there, to me he truly was at the top of his game. One of his last great films (with other greats at the time like Cliffhanger and The Specialist). While I loved Snipes in this one, I can't help but imagine how awesome it could have been with Schwarzenegger in the role. Oh and Elliot Goldenthal's score truly gave this one a unique edge. It is quite unconventional and surprisingly sophisticated for an action movie, but again this one is much more than just a straight action movie. Great review Mr. Harper !

If i'm not mistaken, there is a line in the movie where Spartan says he was conscious for all 36 years of being frozen. Being trapped in your mind for 36 years would be like a hell scape. It's possible i'm just remembering it wrong, but if I am remembering it correctly, that kind of experience should destroy someone mentally.

Thanks a lot Oliver Harper. Thanks to you and your retrospective I bought Demolition Man. Hadn't seen it in years. It does hold up really well after all these years. I loved the characters of Phoenix and Spartan. They're enemies sure, but their dialogue between each other is so funny I almost feel like they're pals. Pals who shoot at each other. Anyway, great job as always.

I had the extraordinarily bad luck to have missed seeing this in the cinema due to the staggering of international release dates. I moved away from Europe, just before its release there, to Asia only for its run THERE to end. I then had to wait for its release on VHS (which took mooooonths back then) all the while being teased and trolled by other kids who HAD seen it. I was so desperate that I even bought the paperback novel adaptation of the film. Another fun fact was that I visited a Planet Hollywood restaurant that had some props from the film - armed with this mix of information I pieced together a strange hybrid version in my imagination which ultimately was somehow a little more satisfying than the film when I finally was able to rent it on VHS. Those were the times my friends and I do miss them. Great review, Oliver! This film and the associated memories surrounding it will always give it a very special place in my personal mythology.

Steller video Oliver! Love it. Your take on the movie has put it in a new light for me, it really is a good commentary on how things could go, or here in America, are going. Class division, nobody wanting to get their hands clean by dealing with defective societal rejects, less freedom and more "safety" can lead to blandness. Thanks for the great video.
