JUNK FOOD JAPAN. Since 1962.
Delighted that the food quality went up dramatically after that disastrous start. Thanks for having me on the show man!
LoL 😂 yeah you just made me 60 years old! But it was so much fun Dr. Broad what’s up next for us ?
geesh man how long until you stop plugging your bloody book! lol
The fry up was missing some black pudding and tattie scone Chris 😂
Love the collabs with Mr. Affable. Subscriber earned! 😅
Theres a dinner 80kms from my house. I ordered fish and chips I ended up with two 1 ft crispy pieces of fish. I was shocked how big the fish was. It was so good and crispy.
@9:35 I bet Chris died a little inside when the counter girl replied in perfect English after hearing him do the Japanese accent. I know I did lmao
That clip has been posted trash taste Reddit
xD it was hilarious!
Bruh poor chris
Read this as that part was playing, I died of second hand cringe.
Why? Fuckin geebag
Angela in the background attempting to not burst out laughing is the best part of this episode.
i didnt notice till the itadakimasu lmaoo
Also her continuing to read Chris's book lmfao.
And drinking Punk IPA. Awesome.
I was laughing my a** of for her
I saw angela in the mt fuji video and here. Who is she? Is she like an assistant, manager? No idea
Nice seeing Chris and his Dad going out for tea.
LoL 😂 I’m not that old yet TOMODACHI
@@JunkFoodJapan Hahaha, big love mate! 🤍
@@JunkFoodJapan Being someone's dad is more a state of mind than it is a physical age. You 100% give off "Cool dad" vibes (meant with the utmost respect).
first thing that crossed my mind when i saw the thumbnail
@@JunkFoodJapan bruh you are 50, he is what? 24? You are at his father's age lmao
‘Well it can’t get any worse than this’ - the highest level of optimism possible from a Brit 😅
But that was so true…
You know the food is bad, when the drinks are the highlight 😂
to be fair its the hub, i wouldnt eat there, snacks or small things sure, but not dinner. And when in Japan its fun trying everything out even things like The Hub
you also know the drinks are a highlight when the food is bad. Prove me Wrong! my statement is better than yours and deserved 100 Likes
LOL
I agree
that food at the Hub was horrendous
When the english breakfast arrives and you see Chris is about to go in on it and then realizes that there is talk that needs to be done. The way he puts away the utensils in disappointment made me smirk ^^
He couldn’t stop eating it. He absolutely loved it 😍
The pain of content creation!
It’s funny that Angela trying not to react at all in the background while reading makes it look like she’s thoroughly not enjoying Chris’ book lol
"its tartar sauce, old boy!" will live rent free in my head forever now 😂
Most of the audience have no idea that Nicholas Pettas (older guy) was a fierce and fearless K-1 (professional marshal arts) fighter standing against far bigger champions and other world class peers. A kind of legend in Japan. Anyway the golden rule regarding fish & chips is that you must start eating it within 60 seconds of it being out of the deep fryer. You will not be disappointed insofar as this rule is met particularly in Japan where fish of all kinds with sushi-grade freshness is available wherever you go.
Cheers TOMODACHI and good tip on the eat it quickly
holy fuck he fought badr hari.... kudos
Yes I spotted him as the Kyokushinkai Karate Guy straight away. I watched him as he went through his own hip replacement physio. His video really helped me with my hip recovery program. Seems a lovely bloke.
He randomly popped up in my recommendations and after a few minutes I had to do some digging on him because I couldn't make out his accent. He has one heck of a background!
@@daboydudus3912 He fought not only Badr Hari but also Alexey Ignashov, both two meter giants arguably the strongest and most talented K-1 fighters meaning the strongest martial artists on earth (though Hari is a bit too mean in character) along with Peter Aerts and Jérôme Le Banner et al. It's not that he won all those bouts but his fighting spirits were certainly most inspiring.
The Hobgoblin even got the incorrect apostrophe on the word PIZZA'S. A truly authentic British menu.😆
"I'm going to sit here and do absolutely nothing."
-Christopher Broad
_Finally_ the man is doing what he's absolutely best at!
Thank you so much to Chris for bringing me here. This channel is ultra underrated. I can see the similarities with Abroad in Japan, but with your own personality and twist. You’re a very funny guy and SO charismatic. Subbed and ready to watch your whole channel
Welcome aboard TOMODACHI. Feel free to hang around for more food stories
I love how your wife just sits in the background giggling to herself listening to two men talk about fish and chips. Best entertainment of the day.
It's just past 10:00am in the UK, Playing this video I really want fish and chips! The Hobgoblin looks like a chain of pubs in the UK called Wetherspoons, the pubs are named after interesting places and events in British history. Glad to see that Cider is beginning to make his way into Japan. I live about 30 minutes away from where Thatchers is produced in the UK (Somerset) it's nice to see it featured. I'm glad you enjoyed the Great British staple that is fish and chips, the fish batter sounded fantastic! Yet another great video!
Hobgoblin is the name of the beer brewed by the whychwood brewery in Witney Oxfordshire, where I live, I'm guessing that this place has permission to use its name, they produce some really good ales and beer, I would definitely recommend trying their Ruby beer 👍
We used to have a hobgoblin in bath, I miss it dearly. Great pub
I think the original one in the UK closed down and now there are 2 here in Tokyo. This is the original place in Roppongi and the best one
@@giantrobot67 I'm betting they don't and they are just using Hobgoblins posters and stuff because they know the beer manufacturer will never pursue them.
I get why you think that but it looks a lot better to me than most Wetherspoons and the quality and size of the food looks a lot better too. I won't ever eat in W'spoons but I definitely will go to that place when I'm there in a few weeks (I'm staying nearby) and will try all 3 of those meals - on separate visits! I just remembered I've been to the Hobgoblin before but I didn't eat anything that time.
i really like the high quality, non blurry shots of menus like @9:25 i love pausing and reading the menu. makes me feel even more "there"
holy shit the way chris switched to his regular accent with the waitress lmao 💀
I import food from the UK to Japan every christmas, it's become kind of a tradition for my wife & I. I get mince pies & Cadbury Heroes
Can you get hold of the goods for a roast dinner in Japan?
Roast potatoes
Yorkshire puddings
Brussel Sprouts
Back bacon
Irish Sausages
Etc.
I don't think I could do KFC on Christmas Id be planning all year to do an authentic Christmas dinner 🍽️
@@GiordanoBruno42 I’m thinking of spending a year in Japan during uni, and my biggest concern is how I’ll be able to eat roast dinner. We honestly need to do a research paper on the logistics behind a Japanese roast dinner
So basically, Japan does Wetherspoons? :D
You bought the happy hour set that’s why those fish and chips in the HUB were “elf” size.
There is only 1 HUB in Roppongi.
Fish and chips used to be served in newspaper, it started in the second world war because of paper rations, but by the mid 1980s it was decided it was unsafe for the food to come into contact with newsprint without a greaseproof paper liner. Nowadays they're mostly served in plain paper. I think some places used fake newspaper wrappers for a while? I miss it, I remember the smell of newsprint blending with the vinegar adding some extra aroma to the dish.
You and Chris are such a great combo! Defiently some Danish genes showing with all that alcohol !
I can handle my 🍺
Hobgoblin is mind blowing ! That menu is impressive and I've NEVER seen fish & chips like that ! Even Gordon Ramsey's fish & chips is not even that close here in Las Vegas.
The first time I came to Vegas I stumbled upon a Hobgoblin bar in the actual airport, I ordered a beer and told him it is brewed in my local town so he gave it to me for free, which was nice.
great story! and nice share TOMODACHI
Loved the advert to watch the Ashes at the Hobgoblin. That'd seem pretty cool.
I love the little detail of the woman reading the Abroad in Japan book in the background. Advertising well done :D
Nick's wife?
That’s Angela my wife.
Cheers TOMODACHI FYI I only go by Nic
I had the big fish 'n chips at The Hobgoblin before and I didn't realize how big it was since Japanese sizes are smaller and I figured it was gonna be a small filet instead of bite-sized fish bits, and I was in complete shock when the waitress gave me that monstrous plate! Tasted great though!
It’s a great pub
I used to go to the Hob many times. We would go there to watch the rugby. Good atmosphere. Good food. Good drinks. Good times.
We have been regulars for years
Getting brits review fish and chips is like my new favorite content
I've also liked how you included the clip where you make the order
As a Brit, I feel like this guy should have his passport revoked after he said doesn't like mushy peas and clearly couldn't immediately identify tartar sauce. He also didn't even bat an eye that there was no form of sausage or black pudding with the full English. Clearly an imposter.
I'm Greek and I think the full English breakfast is what humanity needs to progress.
Welcome here TOMODACHI
Good to see Chris just gets more and more handsome
such huge improvement compared to last year
Two guys hang out and eat! This was great 👍
Asphalt cider, that explains the state of our roads😂😂
I love it when you bring on special guests. The best is seeing how they react to the ITADAKIMASU!
Ordering a liter of beer at lunchtime, the Danishness is showing.
SKAAAL
SKÅÅÅL!@@JunkFoodJapan
They dont wrap fish and chips in newspaper nowadays since it isnt exactly paper and the inks are quite toxic nowadays.
"its sacrilegious, but ill drink it anyway! Huehuehuehue 🥴" that was funny at the end lolol
The atmosphere of hobgoblin was so cool, really like the collab videos with Chris.
That was class, great banter from two brilliant CZcamsrs. As an expat myself its great to enjoy the local food but sometimes its the familiar taste of home that comforts you. You guys went to some great spots.
Chris' book is amazing! 10/10 would recommend buying. So many neat stories from his earlier years in Japan!
This channel is so much fun! Thanks for sharing so many fun adventures with us!
You are welcome TOMODACHI
The legendary boxing combo is back!
And smashing it !
20:13 Nick's British accent sounded like Pete 😂
I laugh so hard when you said "Guacamole right?" 😂
had no idea what it was... LOL
Love this video! Thanks for making it guys
Im going to LOVE this video i can already tell. Thanks Mr. Broad for introducing me to a new creator! I love Japan and I love food so its a win win for me. Excited to check out your other content too.
I was like isn't that his wife in the first shot? Must be fun watching these lads make a video.
LoL 😂 she just wanted to tag along
Yeah it’s hilarious !😅
YESSSS! Long video so hyped! The Hobgoblin looks super fun and the food absolutely made up for that first place. Love the Angela cameo lol
She is good 👍
Always good to see you helping out the small channels like Chris's.
LoL 😂 there is a reason he is Dr. Broad
Your best episode yet. The repeated editors notes were a real bugbear previously but the one you included made me laugh out loud! Great job. I feel like as an editor you're really maturing your craft. Assets used look great, this episode had real energy about it and I really enjoyed it. It deserves all the views it will get.
Thank you for noticing the details, it makes me proud of the team behind the scenes too TOMODACHI
It’s always funny seeing Chris react to your ITADAKIMASU!!!!!
That first fish& chips is exactly like the one I had at a tiny underground "Irish" bar in Tokyo a couple of months ago. Was my first trip and I just had to see what the Japanese take on fish&chips was like...great to see you can get more proper-looking ones!
Great channel! I am finding it for the first time today. Looking forward to more content in the future.
And you are welcome TOMODACHI feel free to binge watch it all and share with your friends and family
So happy I found your channel I love anything about Japan! Great video
CooL and you are welcome here TOMODACHI
Watching the unpaid extra in the back struggling with a cheese pull xD 15:00
haven't watched in a hot minute and man that new intro CLEAN 👍
TOMODACHI !!!!
Tnx Chris and Ryotaro, you bring him back to the light way of force, after hell of shorts and tik-toks, we can again engoy great performance in normal videos. %)
Your support is always appreciated TOMODACHI
Been to the hobgoblin some days ago, its quite expensive but you can have a good time and me expats and so on. So i recommend!
I'm glad Nick collaborates with smaller CZcamsrs like Mr. Affable Man
Right. You gotta take the next generation under your wing
Can't wait to see Ryotaro on the next episode of JFJ.
That episode is hilarious
Very fun video, love the energy! Cheers !
Can't believe I've been missing out on this channel. Seems like a great time. Currently planning a second trip to Japan with the family for next year and we might just get a little slice of the UK when we get there as well thanks to this video.
You are welcome and welcome here on the channel
You know it's a good episode when Angela is seen within.... trying not to burst out with laughter hahaha
This video cracked me up! I noticed Angela sat at a table near the bar.
There’s a Marlins at the roof garden at Seibu Department Store, in Ikebukuro.
Really? I lived 10 years in Ikebukuro when I first came here back in 1991 I used to go and eat the samples in the B1 of that place. It was awesome to get free cake samples when I couldn't afford it
@@JunkFoodJapan The Marlins has been there for about three years at Seibu. I haven’t been for awhile, but the roof garden is a good spot for a beer and some chips.
ALWAYS amazing when some of my favorite Japanese content creators get together! So cool to see you just hang with your friends! ARIGATO TOMODACHI!!! 🙌🏻🙏🏻
Thank you TOMODACHI it’s just fun hanging out with Dr. Chris and a camera
i love this guy im gld he collabed with chris now ima binge this youtube channel
And you are welcome here TOMODACHI!!!
@@JunkFoodJapan ARIGATO GOZAIMASU 🙇♂️
3:20 this has to be some Picasso level art. She gives you the glass and it looks like a normal sized glass then when you grab it your mind instantly turns it into a mini glass haha
I have huge hands
When it comes to cider, my favorites are Bulmers and Thatchers.
I can't get over the prices in the HobGoblin! Crazy Expensive.
The roast dinner caught me by surprise. The best!
Always have been a fan of Chris and the Trash Taste boys, how did I not know of this channel it's fantastic!
Cheers TOMODACHI and welcome over here
Absolutely amazed there is a Hobgoblin pub in Tokyo. It's one of my favourite breweries. No 2 felt like a standard Chip Shop aesthetic (which is good for Japan) but 3 blows my mind it exists in Tokyo. Probably my perfect homesickness cure if I ever lived there.
Thank you TOMODACHI
That Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding looked freakin delicious. I got super hungry watching that last third of this video. XD
This video had me looking up fish and chips restaurants in my area 😆 Looks so good!
Wychwoods are amazing. Hobgoblin is their most famous but they have an incredible variety of other drinks. I visited their brewery back when I used to be a pub landlord in the 90’s
As a British man I love this video and the new anime intro is amazing!
thank you TOMODACHI
What a fun vid! Drinks at the first place then food at the last two!
Lol always nice seeing you collab with Dr. Broad.
Always the best when Chris is with you.
BoooooM
Glad you left the best for last.
Went to the Hub on my first trip in 2011, and never again. In 2014 I found the Hobgoblin by accident in Shibuya and loved it. I go there every time I’m in Tokyo now and the food I’ve had there has always been good.
Swing by Roppongi one next time
Loved the energy from all the Abroad in Japan videos, haven't watch many of yours. Liked this one until I knew you're Danish.. Love from Sweden!
Have my sub!
Yeah TOMODACHI and you are welcome here. Our goal is to hit 100,000 this year so your vote is just one step closer. Feel free to share with your friends and family
Loved the vibes in this video
Reading the title I knew he was going to take him to Hubs
The fish and chip place we grew up going to (town in Ontario Canada) used actual newspaper. It’s the only place I’ve known that uses real newspaper. Been to other decent places but they use food wrap printed like newspaper. ITS NOT THE SAME.
Hobgoblin looks like the pubs we go to here. And I’m a cider girl. My friend also loves cider. It’s big here in Ontario. We have a bunch of craft breweries that do cider and there’s craft cider brewers. One in Toronto is very good, brickworks.
My grandfathers English breakfast growing up (in England in the country in a small village) had the egg, tomato and the toast fried in the bacon grease. Which sounds like the greatest thing ever.
I guess it’s also the emotional attachment to the dish that makes it more appealing. Chris absolutely loved it
@@JunkFoodJapan It's definitely the taste of home. My son moved to New England from the UK, and he's got a stash of proper baked beans for his fry ups. Hasn't found anywhere doing Sunday roasts in CT, though they do have a local chippy that's not too bad. So he does his English breakfasts and Sunday dinners at home from scratch (aside from the beans!).
Val, it was a sad day when they banned newspaper from fish and chips in the UK. It really isn't the same without it.
That’s creative !
I have serious food envy from the Hobgoblins plates. Ginormous portions! 😮 also I’m with Chris on preferring cider over beer. Thank you for taking us along on todays food adventure. 😊
You are welcome
Speaking as an Aussie that has enjoyed most of his experiences in Japan, I do love the wonderful dynamics between you 2 gents. As for. the book, I'll certainly think about ordering a copy.
I'll subscribed, which I'm guessing will start generating more episodes to watch & enjoy.
Hey welcome TOMODACHI and of course there will be more food stories coming soon
Love the energy and the video Nick! Had to give Chris the ITADAKIMASU experience! Also, I feel bad for the editor having to UMAI Chris every time he speaks 😆
He just had to right ! It’s fun
Ah, Malins! Being Scottish, I've had the very best of fish & chips, back home. But Malins does fill the hole whenever I get my fish & chips craving!
Top rating TOMODACHI
Ever been to Blue Lagoon in Glasgow? Favourite chip shop since they destroy it in salt and vinegar. Haven't been in a few years though.
@@jamesmccomb9525 Im not even sure if its still there, i know it was under the Central Station bridge, you get some good food in there.
Keep up the great content Nic!
There was an Irish bar in Shinjuku last time I was there that did pretty good fish n chips and Guinness.
That Sunday roast is PERFECT
I only wish the breakfast had black pudding. The full scottish breakfast is better than the english because of potato scone and square sausage. But both are amazing with black pudding.
I actually prefer a bit of haggis instead of the black pudding and I'm English.
LoL is Haggis as good as they say? I only know it from The Highlander
@JunkFoodJapan haggis is great, but many are put off because its made from the innards of the sheep. I prefer it in the traditional way with potatoes and turnips rather than on a breakfast.
I feel like I would like to try this dish. Hmm time to look for it either in Japan or figure out how to get to Scotland
Just discovered this channel and I'm glad I did you definitely earned a new subscriber
Welcome aboard TOMODACHI
The tower of beer plus passion fruit shot made any subsequent food the best food ever
Nic seems like that mate that would make sure you get home safely after getting drunk even if he's drunk af himself.
You got that right TOMODACHI I have a story about this actually... ask me on a LIVE STREAM one day TOMODACHI
The last fish n chips looked tasty with tarter sauce! Awesome video!
IT'S HUGE but yummy
I love how your wife is reading the Abroad in Japan in the background.
clever product placement with an incredible extra
I kinda like hearing them speaking in Japanese. Kinda seeing how comfortable or not they are. Plus! We get to learn how to order!
At least you get Sarsons vinegar!! Can't get that where I am in Southern Europe 😭😭 I actually brought two bottles back with me when I went back home to the UK for a visit in July 😆
Such a banger episode. Mashed the like button immediately after watching it.
GOCHISOUSAMA DESU !
OH MY GOD the Hobgoblin is still going!!! Remember visiting in...2006 and chatting with the landlord Wychwood literally parachuted in from a pub in the UK to manage the place. Loved the place!
Yeah that place will last forever unless they tear down the building !
I love your enthusiasm and energy, would you do an episode exploring your favorite nostalgic restaurants from when you came to japan for the first time and if you could get Jesse Enkamp on Junk Food Japan, that would be awesome or your old cohost from Imagine Nation Chiaki Horan as well.
Yeah that is the collaboration I am waiting for, @jesseenkamp when are you coming to Japan? We already spoke about it and I will do something when the opportunity arises. I love his content
