- Even though I have made several "How to use a GMRS repeater" videos, in this video I explain connecting to a GMRS repeater in even more simple terms. You might even say this video is "how to use a GMRS repeater for dummies".. I would not say that, but "some people" might. So I show you step by step how to find the correct GMRS repeater channel and how to enter the tones to use the repeater.

Been a ham for 53 years and you have to be the best teacher for all things radio.
I've learned more about radio from him than I did from my ham license classes
A happy Ham! It’s amazing. Thank you happy Ham. Wish more folks were like you sir.
Been a ham 31 wonderful years
Im struggling with this repeater stuff. Enjoy and digest your videos. Thanks for making me chuckle during every video. Great info in your vids. Very easy to listen too.
I'm struggling with them as well. Seems that I live just out of range for about everything..lol
I know I can be snarky and sarcastic from the other side of the aisle, but seriously, thank you for having this channel and posting videos like this as well as your reviews. Radio is both a useful tool and a fun hobby for anyone that has even the slightest interest or need. Keep up the good work. 💜
I love this channel!! Thanks to you, I am a licensed, deconfukulated GMRS operator. Well, at least I can connect to a repeater anyway. Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction.
I understand transmitting and receiving now, more than my “health class” in high school!!
Got a radio and have been studying the HAM book. Decided to jump into the GMRS end of the pool in the meantime so needed to figure out this repeater stuff. Thanks for this ‘Idiots Guide’ and helping to deconfuculate this process.
Your specific finger movements and actions made me finally learn how it all works!😂
Love the disclaimer! Thanks for the information.
He has the best sense of humor out of all CZcamsrs I have ever watched.
Even though I still struggle to connect my radio to a repeater, I’m a novice, first time using a radio, I deeply thank you for your effort to help us, I truly appreciate that.
I really enjoy your channel and find you incredibly entertaining, while doing an excellent job teaching. Thank you.
Thank you, I just started getting into this whole GMRS radio thang. Sense of humor is good to go. Subscribed!
Thanks for the help! I work in San Bernardino and will try connecting to your repeater.
Thank You Randy!
You, sir, are an absolute delight, and have inspired me to go further in learning about radios and all what they can do. My knowledge is but rudimentary at the moment, but I appreciate your level of expertise (and humor) to hold our hands as we venture further into the world of the radio communication arts.
Thank you, sincerely, for all that you do. ❤
Thanks to you i have learned a whole lot!! Thank you.
Thank you for this informative video….
Thanks for the video.🙂👍🏻
The true star of the video arrives at @0:38. You can thank me later.
I had to look
I’m going to disagree. True star arrives at 8:11 top right tab.
Thank you! So easy, even a Sad Caveman can do it!
Thank you for the information. Very helpful and informative. Im now subscribed
Thank you. this helped a lot
OK, your sense of humor just earned you another sub. Keep 'em coming.
Great video again thanks for the upload 🙂
Thank you!!
Lol I am a comedy snob and you’re funny. I love your sarcasm.
👍👍👍 Awesomeness 👌 Thanks Randy. Alan 🇨🇱
Dont blame yourself. Nice hand show...quality is top notch. 🙂👍🏻
Thank you for changing your DPL tones to match. Some radios don’t have the option to have different in and out DPL.
Omg……I’m dying watching your videos!!! 😂😂😂 awesome
Nice job with the slightly twisted humor making dull snooze worthy info entertaining.
Oh My God Dude! I love your channel. You have both a great verbal and illustrative way of putting things. Thank you for taking the time to create these, they are both very informative and entertaining. Rock On!
new here? :)
Thanks for this, since recently picking up a handheld GMRS radio, I find myself messing up connecting to a repeater in my area.
Too easy! Too bad for (sad hams) that you have totally demystified the ease of GMRS repeater usage. Keep up the good work!
Yay, you made a video for your favorite viewer!
Video için teşekkür ederim.
Thanks dude
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
After watching your videos put out over the past few months, I finally unconfuckulated myself with this video! I can at last use my TIDRADIO TD-H3. I live about 35 miles from my nearest repeater that is on the other side of a bluff and I CAN now talk with people!
Thank you ever so much for the help sir
Was that Elizabeth Warren on the background screen?
I tapped your repeater last night, made her squelch and she liked it. Just got into the hobby for my off road hobby 🥴. Love your insights and "detailed" information. You helped me a lot. Hit Mt Wilson's repeater from Hollywood to Redlands yesterday with a UV-5R.
Randy yong man your shit is on point...got 6 uv5rs
You teach us so much.😊
I love you bro
What about CTCSS?
Seriously though, another great video. 👍
whats the model of your radio in this video. Thank you. Funny and informative video. subscribed.
Hey Randy! I don't need to connect my UV-5R to any repeaters, because the world is flat and I can transmit all the way to the Himalayas.
Too damn funny. SIT BACK DOWN SAD HAM 😂🤣😂🤣
Lmao I just noticed what you had up there...hilarious!
Question. How do you disable the global tx function on uv5r using the odmaster app? I only have blue tooth programmer and not the laptop connector. Have looked at app and laptop thru app and no where does it show "duplex" to disable. Until i get my licenses, yes i said licenses (ham n gmrs) i would like to use as a scanner. Thanks
What do you think of the Quansheng UV-K5?
Question on my 905G, menu #15 TX-DTC. When opened it displays "off" while the next line has a limited selection of options for TX tones. At least is does not have the 662 DPL input tone indicated by a nearby repeater that uses 462.650 MHz
frequency. Does this mean I need to get the programming cable and software? TIA!
I only come here to check on the condition of the pencil. Which seems to be deteriorating with each video review. I do have a question Randy: What pencil brand would you recommend for writing? I myself enjoy the Dixon Tri-Conderoga Triangular #2 Pencil brand.
Great video! I'm following along, but I have a question. When you chose the TX dcs, how do you know that the first tone that popped up was correct tone ? I have a uv 5r and there are several different tone numbers to chose from? Thanks!
You have to choose the correct tone from the list. Sometimes thats the first one to pop up, usually it isn't.
So in CHIRP do I need to put something in the offset column? I did put a "+" and 5MHz but was that not necessary?
I love this guy. Hahaha
Thank you for informing me how to put a repeater in my GM 30 I don’t have a repeater to close by. I got permission by two repeater owners but cannot hit it because it’s like 25 to 30 miles and has only like 5 miles.
Keep trying. I can hit repeaters at 30 and nearly 70 miles from my 5 watt Baofeng UV-5G. I also live in the mountains.
Hi Randy. I’m new to GMRS and thanks to your videos I’ve obtain my GMRS license and now thanks to this videos I was able to program my Beofang Gm-5RH to my local repeater using the DCS tones. However I want to use two radios to transmit and received using this repeater. I’m only able to transmit to the repeater but not able to hear the conversation through my other radio that I programmed using the same dcts tones. How do I get the two radios to transmit and received through repeater? I’ve done a radio check through both radios and the repeater owner confirms my radio check. However I can only hear the respond of the repeater owner on both radios but not my initial call from one radio to the other. Man I hope I don’t sound stupid. Anyways really appreciate if you can help me out. Thanks
Hey Randy. What antenna using on that radio?
I am a newbie on the GMRS. .picked up a radioddity gm30. Anyhow got my license and all and went over to my GMRS website and registered. Anyhow reason why I am commenting. is this is a great video and literally cracked up a few times with your hand motions ..
"...confukulating..."
I set up my other phone to except my FaceTime calls by my other phone automatically so I can listen to the radio and keep an eye on my dog when I’m not home you can also use them with the music radio playing to make sure your security cameras feed is live when the radio sinks up 😉 not a repeater but similar.
Can you show this on the uv5g
Can you provide an affiliate link for that cool stylus you used? I want one just like it.
the comedy never stops “porposes” 😉
Which brand of hand lotion do you use? I really enjoy these hand modeling videos.
I get best results with KY ..
Good day. I have a question. I am new to this GMRS world. I programed a repeater in my BETECH GMRS PRO. I have a radio uniden radio scanner that I monitor on.
I programed REPT15 462.5500 with a tone 141.3.
When I press to test the repeater on the GMRS radio, even though I may be out of range, I have the uniden scanner reacting to the test each time. It's usually a non-GMRS repeater Freq shows up on the scanner. Can you explain what this may mean?
You are transmitting on the repeater INPUT frequency which would be 467.5500. This is how it is supposed to work.
So if what you’re saying is true, I AM your favorite viewer. That’s crazy shit right there.
I gotta quit playing my drinking game. I made where i gotta take a shot every time your hands are sarcastic. I only need watching you for a week, and I now have cirrhosis of the liver.
I beg your pardon Randy but if you take your number of views and divided by the number of years you have been on CZcams and even just look at your average views I think you'll find that you are the number one ham channel. Well done sir
Does that mean that if you in range of a repeater and using the corresponding simplex channel, you’ll hear repeater activity, but obviously won’t be able to talk because your not using the repeater mode with the correct tone? If so, how many simplex channels does that use up then?
Check out this video for more details on how repeater channels work: -> czcams.com/video/3PBZYCjNAoc/video.html
Good morning sir, I'm a total newb to radio and GMRS. The problem I'm encountering occurs when I tune into GMRS channel 24. 575/16R [462.575000/+5.000]. My issue is I can receive transmission but I can't transmit. Where can I locate the tones needed to access said repeater on channel 24? I went onto RepeaterBook and located a repeater about 10 miles away I assume thats the one I'm hearing on channel24? But on Repeaterbook there are no tones associated with this repeater. Do I have to try to contact the owner? I even used another radio with Scan feature, it picked up the frequency but no tone was picked up. It said "NONE" under the frequency. Sorry for the stupid question and if I'm not asking it right. {EDIT} I'm using a BOOF WHANG UV-5G PLUS
Return of the roger beep!
How do I program the Baofeng uv 9g to a repeater?
YES! We miss your pretty face! 🙂
Oh man that was fast.. I might have made that TOO easy...
@@TheNotaRubicon LOL! No, I am on a Windows machine in Chrome, so have decent resolution when stopping at frames.
@TheNotaRubicon you should do a video on deconf*ckulating DTMF codes
You shore have a purdy mouth!
@@admiralsnackbar2811yes please
Probably dumb question, but I'm still very fresh... 😑
Can I and my friend both connect to a repeater frequency (which doesn't require any tone) and we both set our own tones, for instance CTSS 69.3Hz, in that way, can we communicate through the repeater in kind of private dialogue?
No.

Are those hands insured?
I have an issue when trying to program in my nearest repeater on my Btech Pro. I have set a group for local repeaters then tried to add the closest one. No problem adding it's transmit frequency but it's receive frequency is 446.575. I can't enter that no. because the Pro asks for the GMSR channel, however that frequency seems to be out of the range of GMSR channels.
Yah, thats not a GMRS frequency.. either it's a typo, and it should be 462.575, or, you're not going to be able to use it.
@@TheNotaRubicon of course your correct (humm nothing new about that) I double ck and found I had downloaded the wrong list.
Hey thanks for your patience with this very new newbie.
So if my GMRS range is about 1 mile, I need to be a distance of 1 mile from the repeater to use it?
That depends on how you are measuring/determining your '1 mile' range and how that relates to the repeater.. So, probably not.
Hey Randy - I'm a moron, and even I can understand your videos. Thank you. Even so, being a moron and after watching the repeater video you posted two months prior to this one, I still have a question. In my area, some of the repeaters do not specify either D or C tones for TX or RX. Instead, they just specify Hz (i.e. 141.3Hz). I noticed that one of the D tones is 141.3 Hz - is that the same thing? Has the repeater owner just not specified the tone as a D or C tone?
You might be asking yourself "Why doesn't this moron just try the D tone and see if it works instead of wasting my time asking this stupid question?" The answer is that I'm not lucky enough to actually be in range of a repeater. I'm trying to learn how to program repeaters for when I travel, so I'm trying to figure out the nomenclature to be able to program a repeater when I'm actually in range of one.
Thanks again for making great videos!
When you go through your list of CTCSS and DCS tones on your radio, you will only find the number (ie; 67) on ONE of those lists.. So just look through both lists until you find the number.
What kinda rubicon do you have???
No one gunna mention the 2 other open tabs on the web browser? Nice Easter egg!! 😅😅😅
Thank you for explaining GMRS repeater setup. I was able to access a repeater located in Grant's NM from Gallup NM. The person I was talking to said the repeater was part of a nation wide repeater system. He said it was linked through the internet. Could you please explain how this works in more detail?
Wait a minute, so am I to understand that repeater starts with the letter r...🤔 Thank you for your patience and efforts sir.
My favorite running gag is the use of the shitty pencil over the fresh sharp ones.
LOL this is f-ing funny!
But how many fars?
✋🏻 Yes. 👌🏻
Repeater tone near me is listed at 103.5Hz tone in & tone out How do I do this?
been a long time... shouldn'a left ya... without a sad ham to step to.... step to... step too... step too...
Aliyah-Timbaland reference. Nice!
When I look up the input tone for a repeater nearby, it tells me the input is 136.5 hz. How do I find the input tone that you're referencing either c or d letters? Thanks you for your time. I am very much a rookie on GMRS.
The default is usually CTCSS, but because there are no shared tones between CTCSS and DTC/DPL you will only find 136.5 listed under EITHER your CTCSS menu in your radio OR DTC/DPL tones in your menu - so just look through both until you find 136.5 (hint, it's a "C")
@@TheNotaRubicon Thank you so much for taking the time to answer the question of a GMRS newb.

It's actually very easy to configure "some ham radios" to talk on a GMRS repeater, once you know how the repeaters work. Legality... well, that's for another ... post.
I told you to stop watching my videos and go away.

Could you make a video explaining the use of DTMF calling on radios? I can’t find anything that explains what it does.
