It’s citizen band not civilian band. I believe the GMRS license only covers family members. Doesn’t cover others in your group that aren’t related.
Negative, your license only covers you're immediate family, not your buddies on the trail with you.
Covers extended family, but you are correct, it doesn’t cover pals.
GMRS radios have removable antennas as well and GMRS license is shareable for immediate family only! Just my 2c.
GMRS and FSR transmit on the same frequencies and HAM can also. Power is the only difference. As long as you don't cause problems, you should be safe using a HAM or GMRS without a license on the FSR/GMRS frequencies. So i wouldn't worry about a license.
Every GMRS radio I’ve ever bought has a removable antenna and all my GMRS radios are FCC approved. The way to go is buy a radio that has GMRS and HAM frequencies. Like the Radioddity GS-5B or the Tidradio TD-H3. Last you can program a HAM or GMRS radio to transmit and receive all the FRS frequencies easily. Just punch in the frequency for channels 1-7, select low power, and narrow band in the settings. My Tidradio and Radioddity both can cover FRS, GMRS and HAM in one radio. No need to load up your dash with 3 different communication devices. CB is low power and outdated.
If nobody is in CB then thats the best time to use CB. The band would be all yours. Also GMRS license covers you and your immediate family, not buddies. HAM is better for long range communication through repeaters and you need to take a test and get license for it. For the trails, CB and GMRS is king. GMRS also has repeaters.
We used CBs for hunting in the 80s , you could hear people from 500 miles away speaking Spanish,but not pick up the guy 1/2 mile away you were hunting with. We swapped to VHF in the 90s ,and mainly use GMRS
I run cb & gmrs. Most of the off roaders & overlanders in SW & SE OH run both.
So are there ham radio police that will come and get you for transmitting If you don't have a license? Same goes for GMRS?
To my knowledge, they don’t really come after people unless they’re causing problems.
However, we don’t want to encourage people to violate the rules. Especially when it’s really easy to get a GMRS license and it’s not very difficult to get an amateur radio license.
The FCC publishes how many citations they issue each yet and what they are for
FWIW Ham radios can use much more power, Handhelds like that one can transmit/receive at the VHF level which travels much farther than UHF (FRS/GMRS). As of April 30, 2020 you can take the technician level Amateur radio test online (technician is the ham radio level that allows VHF/UHF communications).
That is accurate, but only with the beefiest HAM units, as GMRS can withstand 50 watts and has repeater access. the HTs being on average 5 watts, which is basically the same for HAM HTs. This is more than enough for outdoor activities.
Another benefit to GMRS is being on the same frequencies as FRS. If you have a user who would not fall into that Family definition. They can use an FRS radio and still perform simplex-based communication with all but the most faraway members of the group. Definitely a better-than-nothing situation.
HAM is great, but the barrier to entry is too high for most people who want to enjoy the outdoors while having radio capability. HAM has become a hobbyist thing. If radio isn't your hobby, you don't really need it. I was unaware you could do the test online now. That at least helps vs. the old way of finding a club, scheduling a day to go, and testing in person.

Do not discount CB radio. On the highway truckers use CB thus CB is excellent on road trips, not so with FRS nor GMRS. On a road trip there was not one GMRS person, what we picked up were restaurants and warehouse workers and the like communicating. For useful road information it was all by CB. Yes, I have my GMRS license, and an ole CB license call sign as well; showing my age here. In my SUV I would not want to be on a road trip without a CB.
The new f.m. cb is better than a.m. only radios. But if skip is running hi not much local is going on. Skip can take over the band. Also licensed gmrs ( on repeater capable gmrs that can monitor ham) ham can monitor gmes and gmrs can monitor ham band. Both will transmit legal to each other.
I haven’t seen anyone who got the new FM cbs yet, I am curious how well they’ll work. Should have the same clarity as ham and GMRS
I can remove the antenna on my H8 GMRS radio , also did not hear you talk a MURS . cheap and better than FRS
Canada doesn't require a licence for GMRS - Switching as soon as possible.
The boefang mgrs uv5r is $30 and can do that
CB is still good and even better if the band is quite. With CB some days you can hear people and if you are near a major roadway there may be someone just listening. I am sure they are more people on than you hear. A CB Signal will fade and become low because it's AM like a AM Radio station fades and becomes faint you may hear it but volume is low. Also depends on the Antenna. There are people who install a CB and install a little bitty antenna. CB Requires a long Antenna at least 33 " and having a good SWR is very Important.
All good points, and I’ve still never taken my CB out. I do hear occasional chatter on the interstates, (and for some reason I can hear the same guy on ch 6 from atlanta all the way to Savannah). But where I am in middle Georgia I don’t hear anything.
I have a 48” fire stick antenna, SWR was low but I don’t remember the number. The uniden in the video has a built in meter, I used it for tuning the antenna.
I just haven’t brought myself to remove it yet. I’m hoping these new CBs that are coming out may bring people back. I haven’t seen one in person yet.
@@wickedjeepand4x4georgiacha40 The guy on Channel 6 is up around Chicago or somewhere in Minnesota. I am serious he has a very powerful radio and has been on the CB for years. There may also be someone in Atlanta. I hear things and I am in Middle Georgia off I-16 near Soperton. I can sometimes hear him bleeding over on several channels.

I'm a ham license and an overlander. I'll never understand why you guys that ride in big groups need any communication device with a license just to talk three or four vehicles in front of you. That is the one area where CB is king.
Cb is the way we grew up doing it, but GMRS is way cheaper, has more clarity, and repeater towers
When you turn the squelch to maximum on CB you have effectively eliminated everything accept someone standing right next to you. There are thousands of conversations going on on the CB band at any given time. There is where the problem is. CB conversations bounce all over the continental United States because of the bandwidth. CB is not good for local conversations mainly because of illegal amplifiers boosting their power. Stick with GMRS, loosen that set screw and add an antenna to your roof and you will really enjoy the range. External antennas are perfectly legal on GMRS. One license for a non related group is not.
