Anyone commenting about how she sounds different must have never been to a live performance before. A truly live performance NEVER sounds the same as the studio recording. If it does sound the same, then it’s lip-sync!

It's her new Defying Gravity in more ways then one.
The reason she lowered the key is very simple.
Let it go, just like Defying Gravity is VERY stressful on the voice.
She had to more or less stop preforming in Wicked because she kept damaing her vocal cords.

It’s not easy to produce some of the notes she did with the amount of clarity she managed to make them. Her voice was incredibly powerful in this. +Ihdc1 it is the real pitch, the disney is the one who turn it into a high pitch to make it perfect for the age of Elsa in the movie. Idina's voice is quite mature yet shes perfect to the character to give life of it and it also market for choosing her.

+Eric Levi Yeah, but what's the point in thinking about it now. Still, performing at the Oscars was freaking stressful for her. She's one of those unfortunate people who can work themselves into a true hysteria when they're real nervous and that's exactly what Idina did. Until the last moment before the performance, she was tweeting pics of herself rehearsing rehearsing and rehearsing. She's waaay too tough on herself. Also, the whole idiotic thing when Travolta wasn't able to get her name right. Trust me, many artists would be knocked out after that. Thank heavens she was able to perform AT ALL. Last but not least, I have HUGE issues with the dumb producers/ organisers of that particular Oscar show. Why THE FUCK was half the song left out?! Why was the orchestra literally in another building (I mean, doesn't this even sound ridiculous)?! Also, the song sounded sorta sped up which it shouldn't have been. So - see it's not all Idina's fault... She fought her best, honestly.

yeah, you could see she was so nervous she about to pass out. Another reason for that is that she's not really a pop star, I guess she's just used to smaller audiences. Naturally, singing live for the whole world must have been horrifying for her. As disasterous as that performance was, it was still magical at same time. She IS the ultimate Disney Princess.

“Her voice doesn’t sound like a typical Disney princess”
Posted the below reply in a different video months ago.
In a way yes, but that’s because for decades we had it in our brains that Disney princesses are innocent, gentle, hopeless romantics - nothing wrong with that though! But we can’t have that all the time!
Idina’s voice is very POWERFUL dynamic, and has many many layers. Do you really think a stereotypical voice would have been suitable for the let it go sequence where she unleashes her powers and “lets the storm rage on”? Didn’t think so. Idina’s dark and emotional tones on her lower range were a perfect match for the first verse of the song while her signature upper range and belting skills were perfect for the key change. Kristen Bell, on the other hand, was the perfect stereotypical princess voice and it was great to see their dynamics and differences blend well.
If your daughter has a raspy voice like kelly clarkson or a deep/dark tone like Billie eilish, or likes things and activities that are marketed more towards boys, would you tell her she can never one day become a disney princess because she doesn’t fit the mold?
Those who change the game will be remembered in history. That’s what Idina did.
Also, she ain’t no princess. She’s a queen. All hail the queen.
****Regarding the comments about sounding different, know that this is in a key that’s a half a step lower to make it a bit easier - all singers do this and some even take it a full step lower for live performances of songs nowhere near the difficulty of let it go. Also, Idina stated she intentionally tried to sound like the way she sounded when she was younger to give Elsa a youthful sound. She doesn’t need to do that all the time. It’s not autotune coz if it was, then why not hire some nobody who can barely sing ang autotune her to perfection so that disney can save money?
Thank you for coming to my TED talk. BYE 👋

Her vocal technique is impressive. It's very hard to sound as good live as in a studio (where every aspect of the sound can be controlled by an engineer) -- Outdoor acoustics are fickle.
And yet, she still sounds spectacular.
And that's the difference between singing talent and an engineered sound.

Believe me, Frozen is not all that great but beautiful of a modern Disney piece of animation nonetheless. It's stunningly animated, occasionally funny, musically spectacular (even though not all the songs match Let It Go's power) and surprisingly heartfelt. And the sisterly love story is totally refreshing creative change of pace from most of Disney's fairy tale adaptations. If you like the song, wait until you see the movie.

I swear, no one ever talks about the instrument players. Like we never realize that the players are using the same amount of courage, and same amount off rehearsals and practice as the singers. But apparently the singers are always the ones who get all the attention. Like the players literally work there buts off each day to. They are the ones who make the song beautiful, make the song come together. I feel bad for them.
