This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things czcams.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.
A pleasure to watch this gentleman work. A real craftsman.
I’m a 57 year old carpenter and every time I watch a Dan Cox video I pick a new trick up!
That’s great Kelvin !
Never to old to try and learn something.
Luverly. Takes me back to my days as a draughting apprentice. More please.
Dan the man, at it again.
I'm just a DIYer but this is still excellent reference material 👍
This guy is truly the Vincent Van Gogh of his trade 😊
I would like to see a video or demo of the various uses of a nail gun, tyoes of nail, cartridges, cost, etc., one of the tools I never got round to buying as I am semi retured now, i dont think it would get it's full use. Great video. 👍👍👍
Poetry in motion again Dan, watching Skill Builder is one of my favourite pastimes as I have an in-depth renovation on my hands, the channel has improved my knowledge and skills immeasurably.
Those are details we need awesome
Another masterclass from mr cox
Another top video from the channel, keep it up lads.
Great tips Dan👏 You are a pro at your trade👍
Brilliant work Dan !
Dan cox seems like a great guy. More content from him please 😊
thanks. your experience is greatly appreciated.
Love your work dan. Pleasure to watch
Great video but way above my understanding.
Some great tips in there Dan. and you know I'm a line and nails on top guy which serves me well. However, its undeniable that your homemade line blocks and line underneath technique is supremely accurate, and especially good for longer roofs👍
Thanks Del.
We can discuss over or under at the next AGM. 😂.

Dan you legend keep the videos coming 👍🏼🔨
Top tips from a top class carpenter. Nice size bevel you have there Dan.👌👌👌
Thanks Kevin.
👊🏻
he's a joining God, and the background music adds to his godlike aura
Same as Dan must admit I'm a line on top man😁☘️🇮🇪👍👏👏
Dan, the man.
The string jig is a good idea. I will steal that technique.
Steal away. Hope it helps you out.
Thank you that was really good to see the Different ways of doing it best regards Mark
Great watch as always Dan top lad 👍👍
Thanks Brian.
Accuracy is so perfect I wish I would have been there to learn.
Nice video, very informative thanks 👍🏻
Bloody wonderful 👌
Beautiful work!
I’ve never put the line underneath but it makes sense. Love the fascia brackets as well, meaning you don’t need a mate.
Thanks
Great video! Thanks for posting!
That is a genius way to work with the soffit. I have a manufactured home and I need to bring out the eaves to protect the walls because if we get another winter like this last one in the San Joaquin Valley in California I need to get on this project. Thank you for going step by step with this process.
Thank you for your tips.
It is our pleasure. The more you watch the more we like it
Good job Daniel. I see you managed to keep hold of Rogers nail gun still!😂😂
It’s a long loan. 😆
👌👌👍👍perfection
Noggins between the rafters inboard of the gable ladder stop the inside rafter from twisting. A small detail but well worth adding. They will also support steel strapping run over the top to act in tension against snow loads.
Love the underneath line tip.
Ive always struggled to get the feet perfect.
Acceptable.
But not perfect.
I can always see any minor deviations.
Especially on 400 centres.
What doesn’t always help is plastic fascia. It can bend and bow even when the rafter feet are at 400 centres.
@Daniel Cox 7" fascia. 18degree pitch roof. 6 metres long.
I spent too long getting it as good as I could.
The top was bang on.
Used 9mm osb and 90mm plastic trim for the soffit.
Used a chalk line and individually marked every rafter foot with a boat level. Was proud of it from the top
But from underneath it looked slightly wiggly.
Something only a tradesman could see.
But I am a tradesman
It bugged me.
Had to leave it tho.
I'd hammered the polytop nails home.
@@flyingjackcarpentry9394 sometimes it’s just not happening.
A sub fascia helps but it’s another cost.
Great video… saved! 👌🏼😁
got lots of tips from you guys, so heres one i found, when cutting out a notch in a joist a multi tool with a wood blade does the undercut very nicely. ;)
Would love Dan to have his own channel
He has, it is Skill Builder
@@SkillBuilder exactly, and I need Roger to direct me. 🙌
Dans class 💪🏽
Very good explanations. Get excited when I see Dan is in a new video. Is that a hikoki nailer I see? 👀. Wouldn't mind a video review on that lol👍

Thanks rockabilly rebeljim. 🙌
Get your aluminium bevel added to your website as soon as possible!
In Scotland we would add a bellcast before fitting facia. This gives a more secure fixing for facia and gutter brackets. Snow load can push facia nails out if not.
The author does like to from scratch, czcams.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
Quality
I didn't realise they still did gable ladders and barges......One of the first things I was allowed to do on a roof on my own, about 35 years ago.
great work and tips !!
Lots of info. Datum lines don't get talked about enough. Nice and easy to absorb thanks to Dan not being up his own arse like some youtubers on other channels.
Thanks Rob, the great thing about Dan is that he doesn't claim to be God's gift to carpentry and that makes him a joy to work with.
He is also always coming up with inventions to make jobs easier. More of that coming very soon,
Thanks Rob.
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. oh no no. Thankyou! 🙂 pleasure to watch

Dans the man 👍🏻
excellent vid as always. i do gable ladders both ways like. picked up the second method of notching the rafter out of an american book years back which had stuff by larry haun in it. used it on a few roofs. i guess a combination of both maybe would be a good call.
that bevel would deffo come in handy. id be buying one of those like. That line underneath tip ill have to try that out next time alongside the facia brackets i made that i blatantly copied of you from another of your videos.
Thanks for watching Paul.
Hopefully the bevel will be available soon .. 😬
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. excellent I shall look out for it. Be easier than using small bevels on a roof
@@paulfinnonjoinery thanks.
Hi can you please show us structure of gable roof ladder with a small flying hip roof at the top. Thank you
Hi Dan. Stick the hip adjustment on you roof share.
Dan’s the new English Larry Hann
Can he repeatedly smash in 4 inch nails in one hit all day long?
Larry Haun was a different league.
@@flyingjackcarpentry9394 no…
@Ultimate-roofing-square. tbf I read it was a common practice in America years ago to lube the nails in a bucket of something over night so you could drive them in quicker.
It was frowned upon by inspectors.
Price work is price work tho.
@@flyingjackcarpentry9394 and a bit of lube on your elbow. 😆
Nice work - are those Chile 62's you are wearing?
Yes! Worn out now. 🙌
Lovely jubbly
Great video,
after some advice on 1st fix nail gun, at the moment using the dewalt 18v platform for various tools but needing a nailer, the dewalt nailer doesn’t seem a very popular option swaying towards the Milwaukee what do you think?
Hikoki Is a brand well worth considering
I have 2 Hikoki nail guns. Never had any problem. Just stay away from nail guns with "flywheel system", so my options would be Hikoki or Milwaukee, both have the so called air spring.
I always extend and notch,
like I always run a hip on a flat roof overhang
Retired Carpenter for 50 years of roof work you're forgetting presense of mad price work bricklayers to get it done bloody quick
How far does it over hang ?
I live in a high wind load area so we don't notch rafters. The rafters have to hold the roof down as up as hold it up.
With the nogging that is cut into the rafter; will it make the bottom part of the rafter have to take up more forces in tension, or does the cut-out not afffect the compression of the rafter?
If the cutout is tight the compression is maintained to some extent, but it will marginally weaken the rafter.
How do you attach the string to those brackets you made? . Great video despite the strange language you speak. But somehow I understand it. Thank you
I’ve cut 2 slots in the back and a loop in the string line fits in just nice.
Thanks.
why use the notchs if the blocking is stronger then
These videos are brilliant, skilled trades explaining how things can be, should be, done. If I have only one comment about the videos that is a worry it is the lack of lung protection I see, I wish they would wear a mask, the tiny particles off the materials being worked can be truly nasty to your lungs; wood can trap some strange things within it as it grows and locks them in until someone cuts into it again and out they come. Be kind to yourselves, wear a good dust mask when working because the advice and skill you share is seriously useful and needs protecting.
Masks are not particularly good for filming CZcams videos though 😉
@@pchisholm4 yes, I do suppose they can muffle the voice. 🤔😬
This blokes not bad he should think about taking up carpentry full time
What metal bevel is that Dan? I went one!!
I made it !
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. get these made like your squares! Recon they would sell really well 💪🏻
@@MrAidanfleming that’s the plan. 👊🏻
Definitely get those bevels made Dan. 👍
@@barryford7135thanks, hopefully out soon…. 🙌🏻
What do we use a gable ladder for?
It's part of the roof structure that extends the gable edge of the roof beyond the exterior wall. They call it a ladder because of all those stiffeners (noggins?) that get added so it looks like a ladder... i think? :)
My understanding is that the ladder is for up to a 12” overhang.
I had no idea Steve McQueen was in to carpentry.
Whose the better carpenter? Dan C or Robin Clevett?
You would have to define 'better' and then ask why you think it is important? So many people want to turn everything into a game show.
@@SkillBuilder not trying to start a fight. 🙈
Better than robin clevett any day
Both framing members should be a half mortice on the edge. You should never have the gable end outriggers on the face.
weaker last rafter with notch - sorry
Nice one Dan, it’s been a long time since I saw timber facia and soffit .
Gable end roof ladders specifically designed to get in the brickies way😫😂🧱👍🏼
It made a change to fit a decent wooden fascia, shame it was only temporary. 😬
🙌
Big deal!! Try doing it on a ladder!
Thanks
