How To Build a Base For A Shed or Garden Room
▶ www.insulatedpanelstore.co.uk
Garden Room Kits
The Insulated Panel Store garden room kits are made with the highest quality of QuadCore Insulated Panels on the roof, walls and floor. The unique channel installation method eliminates the need for a timber or steel frame substructure, the speed of build means the buildings can be installed by a competent DIYer within 1 day, creating a watertight building whatever the weather.
The insulated panels combine an internal liner, insulation layer and robust metal facing into a single product that is quick and easy to install, with no need to build up multiple layers. They offer the same great thermal and structural performance of those used on large scale, with a life expectancy of over 40 years, giving you peace of mind that your garden room will be built to last.

Creating a concrete base for a shed involves several steps to ensure a stable and long-lasting foundation. Here’s a comprehensive guide:
1. Planning and Preparation
First, decide on the location of your shed. Choose a flat, well-drained area. Measure the dimensions of your shed and mark the perimeter with wooden stakes and string, ensuring the area is square by checking diagonals.
2. Excavation
Excavate the marked area to a depth of about 150-200mm (6-8 inches). This depth allows for a sturdy base layer of gravel and the concrete slab itself. Ensure the ground is level by using a spirit level.
3. Adding a Gravel Layer
Spread a layer of crushed stone or gravel approximately 100mm (4 inches) deep across the excavated area. This layer improves drainage and prevents water from pooling under the shed. Compact the gravel using a tamper or a plate compactor to create a stable surface.
4. Building the Formwork
Construct a formwork using timber planks around the perimeter of the excavated area. The formwork height should match the desired thickness of your concrete slab, usually around 100-150mm (4-6 inches). Secure the formwork with wooden stakes driven into the ground, ensuring it is level and square.
5. Placing Reinforcement
Place a steel reinforcement mesh or rebar grid within the formwork for added strength. This reinforcement helps the concrete withstand heavy loads and prevents cracking.
6. Mixing and Pouring Concrete
Mix the concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions, either by hand or using a concrete mixer. Pour the concrete into the formwork, starting from one end and working across. Use a shovel or a rake to spread the concrete evenly.
7. Levelling and Smoothing
Level the concrete using a long, straight board (a process known as screeding) to remove excess concrete and ensure a flat surface. Smooth the surface with a trowel for a professional finish.
8. Curing
Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24-48 hours before removing the formwork. For full strength, keep the concrete damp and protected from extreme weather for about a week.
Following these steps will help you create a solid and durable concrete base for your shed, providing a stable foundation for years.

I really enjoyed the video. Two things that I'd really like to see more of are: First the bit from 1:00 to about 1:45 that takes about the beam cross section, compression, tension, etc. I'd really like to learn more about the logic behind this. Second, I'd like to learn more about the hand tool technique in cutting the mortises with that large chisel.

You shouldn't need anything that bog in a house. A feiend of mine has just been told the steel sizes for his loft extension and they are far bigger than we used to fit. Im not sure whats going on with planning and regs but that along with the rediculous. Insulation rules is going mad. Never heard of any failing. Why the over engineering?

Agreed. LBC quality is absolutely shocking now. They send in a pack of premium priced face bricks as if they were regrades. Poor molding, cracks and chips, and they're even starting to get cheap with the faces, by giving you only one head on most of their bricks, meaning you have to frog down. Why the fuck these bricks are so expensive I don't know.

Question if I can please; if you have a wall that's longer than you can plaster first-coat in one go, and you're on your own, how do you go about sorting that? Would you complete the whole wall and let the left side go off a bit too much, or feather the right hand edge into the unfinished section and take care of the left whilst it's still in a good condition to work on?

Where is this 2.5m limit measured from if you're building on a sloping ground? We have a garage at the back of our garden and it's 2.4m tall from the access road level going behind it. But the garden is sloping down towards the house so from the ground level at the house end it's taller...
