A thing you need to know about vans and similar large worky vehicles:
NEVER fix purely cosmetic issues, it automatically keeps taxis and other people who takes lot of care about their vehicles a good distance from you
It's like an automobilistic haggis
What if I wanna get mine graffitied up like the side of a train? Think that'll also help keep bumblefucks away from me?

"OH WELL START 'ER UP!"
basically anyone who works on anything, you name it automotive, tech, even doctors do this. Two months ago I got very bad cough, and when I go to the doctor they thought it's either ol' mate corona or TB, then the rontgen came out and the radiology guys thought it was TB, but bcs I couldn't get any phlegm out of my throat (which was needed to officially diagnose me with TB) after two months of back and forth trying to get the phlegm out and taking rontgen and waiting for the doctor to be available in the end the doctor just goes "well you don't show any symptoms anymore, and you didn't even feel ill anymore.... nah mate we'll call it a day here you don't need medicine just don't smoke, it's probably that one TB bacteria you got when you were 3 (bcs I did get TB before), it's fine... you're not dying anyway so your body will fix itself"
Same for computers. My laptop has drivers that are crapping out and probably runs too hot. Eh, it’s fine so long as it doesn’t crash too badly.

Love to see it! Also excited to see more car stuff, love to watch you messing around with them
4:21 "No mechanical issues at all" Famous last words
When the engine goes kerplooey, you should swap it with a Ford diesel from an older Transit. Those things are literally indestructible.
I’m going to buy a new Ford F-350 and put an old transit motor in it because powerstrokes are that awful
If this is a Mitubishi Express like I think it is, it already has one of the most indestructible engines of all time in it. It's the gearbox and diff that need rebuilding (and also the engine too just to freshen it up and help with the terrible fuel consumption).

What a nugget of an old van! Tbh vans are one of my favourite cars and I mean no bias from the fact that we literally have a minivan + my life growing up with minivans! They're absolute tanks! I don't care if y'all see them as "ugly mom cars" or "that creepy white van", they're dang good at what they do! Even with the most beat up ones (our last van lasted pretty long despite all the problems she had that we weren't told about)!
I could go on for hours about vans and minivans!
Not a van guy but I have the same fodness for station wagons. Sadly, SUVs and minivans have made them all but nonexistent these days.
I drive my purple odyssey around everywhere, I’ve even taking the dang thing off roading. 12 years later and the thing still runs like a dream.
Another CZcamsr I follow said a while back that most suburbanites who buy a pickup truck should really have bought a minivan instead. If you get one where the seats fold down/come out, you end up with just as much if not more cargo area than a mid-size truck, with the only downside being that you can't fit tall things. But in exchange for that you get a way bigger passenger capacity, lower cargo height so it's easier to load, covered and air conditioned cargo area, slidey doors that make tight spaces easier, and usually a DVD player too!
@@EvertG8086 I have never seen a purple Odyssey! That's so neat! Btw the minivan we had that I mentioned was also a deep purple!
Lol. I thought you and James would only get this van in "passable" condition like the Niki, but wow! I was not expecting the interior to look this good! Just replace the radio, buff out the dents, and clean the exterior, and this would TRULY feel new.
I think the point was utility above all else, though. No need to put Sunday clothes on a work mule. It's fine looking as beat up and aged as it is.
I had an '88 Cherokee Laredo and the rear differential sounded exactly like that for years, specially on highways; it is still in use today to haul logs in the middle of nowhere and still does that sound, the engine may die way before that winning differential start doing the clacking sounds, also the chassis has started to become a bit warped but that's a history for another day (yes, they do really haul logs on it but not everyday, rust is the culprit)
When this old mate finally kicks the bucket, you might be able to change its registration to "combat helicopter."
That van was proper grotty. Awesome automotive archaeology dig, seems Aussies have a thing for that. Needs new blinker fluid tho.
I said it once and I'll say it again. You got me into cars dude. Like straight up know that you can fix up any old thing broadened the options a bunch and I suddenly realized how wide of a world there was for cars. Also that I'm obssessed with Japanese imports and wanna just go drifting. Like I've started getting a smile on my face when it rains or snows cuz I know once I get my baby I'm gonna have so much fun on slick roads.
This is the most relatable video of yours ever, as my daily driver is a 2003 Toyota Sienna with 270k+ miles on it, it's second transmission, death wobble at any speed between 60-85mph (it can do 90 and the shaking stops), and a CD and tape deck that plays through only mids as the base and tremble were blown out by yours truly on the highway one day
Vans are a thing of beauty. I drive a 2016 Ford Transit Connect XLT (Short wheelbase) at work and it's so useful and handles pretty good when it's not loaded up.
4:24 nah mate, you just got some fully sick straight cut gears!!!
In the future I highly recommend a product called Krud Kutter... stuffs literally an amazing degreaser and cleaner. Top notch product I've used professionally even. Not sponsored just being helpful because that stuff saved my butt as did those scrub brush sets that hook to a power drill.
Yaaay, please start doing vlogs as well, I find you extremely entertaining to watch!!!
James, the man, the legend, that interior looks amazing!
"I'll give it 3 months before it explodes"
It wouldn't need 3 months, it would need a month.
2:23 Damn James, that looks nice!
I relate so much to what you said in the beginning, that's why my project car is a manky 60s military vehicle (L3314N '67), it's pretty scuffed, which is great, I'm never going to fix it up aesthetically just take care of the mechanical stuff and the worst of the rust, so I can not give a single crap about bumping into stuff or being a bit rough when I take it offroading.
My late dad was a 'James'. Miss him a lot. It's really great seeing James be included on your channel. Don't know where I'll find a new one though. Thank you for another video ^_^

Before the main comment I just want to take a moment to appreciate the majesty of those shag-pile seat covers...
Now that has been addressed, I love your new shoe box missile, The old clapped out stuff is always a hoot to drive, The seats are nice and bedded in, the steering wheel feels like a freshly shaven face and you don't have to worry at all about scratches because what are ya' gonna' do scratch the scratches lmao, I have always had beaters as daily run arounds (Being a mechanic if it goes wrong I just laugh at it and say alright mate it's time for a birthday) the freedom you get is unmatched by new cars and what's even better as long as you change the oil and filter every year without fail and only flog them like they owe you money every other weekend they last a lifetime (Until they turn to dust that is, UK is not great for salt in the winter it eats cars)
I loved your idea with the padded carpeting, One tip I might add that may help you when transporting drums, Get yourself a 50 or 100 meter drum of 550 paracord cheep off the internet (The stuff is like zip ties you find uses you never thought possible) and fit some of those D shaped tie down hoops in the back of the van about a foot off the floor, Then make a couple of zig zags side to side and either corner, Make them somewhat loose you can slot the drums in the gaps and then whether they are in cases or not they won't shuffle around and scratch each other up
Hope my mad idea is somewhat helpful or gives you a chuckle
Thank you for the awesome videos as always
I hope you and all the family (Old mate James included) Have a great rest of your day and a nice week, Be safe and Take care out there wherever you are (^=W=^)7

I like vans, my favourite was my 2002 Hiace that had grease for oil for the last 5 years. I currently have a 89 Starwagon (L300), and its pretty rough, bodywork, carby, ability to keep water out, alternator is on the way out. Shitbox van life is easy and rewarding, if you have ready access to the enginebay which is a worry in your case.
This is slowly turning into pimp my ride. Love it
