Ski-Doo Super Olympique 370 - FIRST START! 1968

  • Snowmobile season has finally arrived!!!! Time to get some vintage sleds in the powder! The first project to kick off the 2022 season is this wonderful original 1968 Skidoo Super Olympique (or Olympic ... lol) with the 370 Rotax opposed twin cylinder engine. That's right folks, a Boxster engine! Purchased a few years back and never ran, Matt dives into this project head first to access what it will take to get this old survivor back on the snow. Spoiler alert, engine and track damage was detected! If you like old snowmobiles, old motors or wrenching on old vintage iron, you will enjoy this ski-doo video!
    If you enjoy mechanics and working on old engines, this Rotax 368cc is a fun one. Made only in 1967, 1968 and 1969, skidoo offered these super 370 opposed engines in Olympique and Alpine models. They put out 18.5 hp at 5000 rpm. They have a single Tillotson carb mounted on the rear cylinder. This particular example, seems to have had a little water damage, but hopefully can be brought back to life. Stay tuned!

    The 68 Ski-Doo would ride over deep snow. Travel right past the Cat & Polaris sleds with cleated tracks stuck. I did it alot. I liked turning around and riding past again. I modified the exhaust to dual with round lawn tractor mufflers. It sounded really good.

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I can image a dual exhaust would sound great on a 370. Especially with different length pipes to offset the “poping”! Thanks for sharing the memories and thanks so much for watching!!! Take care!

    I had the same piece of junk back in the mid 70s when I was a kid that I bought and it also had a bad track and stripped spark plug hole.. got the head helicoiled at napa and the plug blew out again as soon as I started it.. Anyway they installed the helicoil backwards so I fixed that myself got it running and the track started coming apart.. Ran ok but then I found a piston was cracked and rings were broke in back cylinder and nobody carried that and I was told parts weren't available because the machine was to old even though at that point it was only about 7 yrs old .. Well threw it back together and ran it as is cracked piston fitted with Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine piston rings with missing track chunks for a few years then finally sold it to someone with an identical unit and moved on .. That junker ran damn good with Briggs lawn mower rings and was quite the talk of the farming neighborhood... Probably easy today with Internet to get any parts it needs but back then every part seemed to be obsolete.. Boy things sure have changed and this video brought back some silly memories of that machine ... Lol

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah these engines were known for having stripped plugs. Both the fact that they were hard to start and the plugs were lined up strangely contributed to that… Parts are definable not easy to find, but if you are persistent and willing to pay the price, they can be found! I never heard of using briggs rings in an engine like this, but it makes sense. Probably easier even to this day to find suitable Briggs rings vs original Rotax. Thanks for the comment, I really enjoyed reading it! Glad you enjoyed the video! Take care!!!

    My dad bought his new. Allways had problems with the front cylinder often not running. It was a comon issue.
    I was 9 years old and it was hard to start because both cylinders compress at the same time. Thats why the recoil is so big.
    They dont like to idle they foul the plugs.
    There were no NGK plugs then and they didnt like champion plugs. They ran on bosch sparkplugs.
    Im amaazed you can get parts for the engine. They are super rare.
    The keyway went bad in the crank for the fly wheel. The engine was scrapped .

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah parts are hard to find, so I buy them when they come up for sale. Also have a lot of parts motors to keep the runners alive! Thanks for the info and comment, I enjoyed reading it. Take care!

      Yep had the same one and all the old timers / mechanics insisted it was a single cylinder because the 2 cylinders fired at the same time... Lol.. I tried arguing it's still has 2 separate cylinder and piston assemblies making it a 2 cylinder but those arrogant old timers wouldn't here of it!!! Lolroflmao.

    That cylinder head would come off relatively easy. I think. And O’Reillys, autozone… Princess auto? In Canada… Don’t know your stores. But they sell a spark plug thread insert kit. It has, the tap. The insert tool, and several inserts. They really work slick. I did a couple of Volkswagen heads. Aluminum. And they worked perfectly. I think I paid $28 for this? Maybe not more than that. But it was well worth the price. And once you have the tools. You can just buy the inserts. Cool old sled. I didn’t know that Rotax made a opposed twin. I know that Evinrude used OMC opposed twins. But I didn’t know that Rotax made one.

      @mattsws  Před 2 lety

      I don’t want to spoil the upcoming videos, but the head gave me a heck of a lot of trouble coming off!!! Two of the studs were fused to the head… Thanks for the feedback on the insert kits. I am shopping for one currently and glad to know they are a reliable fix. You are right, they are about 40$ cad. As for the rotax, its the only model that I am aware of that was made opposed. They only made them for 3 years and from what I am told, they were not very reliable….. I’ll just have to learn the hard way!!! Thanks for watching! Take care

    what do you use for old gas tanks? I thought of sand or the stuff they use in sand blasters and fill em up and find you an old paint mixer or shaker like a paint store has. old fuel tanks are a big pain to clean up or maybe carb cleaner at about twenty bucks a gallon can. Its hard unless you can find say a plastic replacement tank not just snowmobiles any type motorcycle or four wheeler or small engine. Its like a boxer engine like a subaru or volkswagan maybe crazy but you never know out of the box thinking.

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  Před rokem

      The steel tanks on these sleds are part of the frame, so cleaning the rust is almost impossible without cutting them open. Usually they leak also, because they are steel… luckily this one looks good! The engine is a boxer style engine. They weren’t very good for many reasons, but I still find them cool, so I am trying to revive this one! Take care!!!

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  Před 2 lety

      I didn’t, because the engine was turning over ok, but on an engine that sat for 10+ yrs, I would recommend turning it over with oil as you describe. It will smoke like heck when it starts, but you give the rings, etc a chance!
