    I tested out this same rifle, along with a 16 inch non-iron sighted version that has a medium weight barrel. After free-floating the 18 inch rifle a little better, (the stock had slight contact with the barrel, and only showed by rubbing the blueing off slightly after about 300 rounds, after which I sanded the stock a little in that area) I got much better accuracy. The 16 inch barrel also had the same issue, but didn't suffer as much in accuracy. They are now both single hole shooters at 100 yards.... Love your videos man! Thanks :)

      My stock wasn't touching to my knowledge. I sold the gun a few months ago. Thank you for the advice though! Thanks for watching!

      You're quite welcome! Keep in mind yours might shoot differently than mine... I kind of hope it does because that 20gr fmj just zips right through small game animals without doing much damage... Be good on wolf and coyotees though

    Good video mate.
    I brought the Ruger American 18" barrel in .22wmr and with the right ammo found it fantastically accurate. I am going to try a limb saver Deresonator to try to really fine tune it in the next few weeks.
    I think you should do this test again but at 100yards as that is where most people will be sighting in for at the least.

    Considering buying this gun. Also looking at the Marlin XT and the Savage B17. Both are a little more expensive. I do like the fact that I can get the Ruger American in a compact version. I believe yours is that as well. I have the Ruger American in 22 mag (compact) and love it. Thanks for the fine video.

      410mossberg the other models you mention may give you a little more accuracy. but for compact hunting, this one's great!

  • @camyota

    Too bad there's not a 20 grain ballistic tip. I think the hollow point of the available 20gr loads (except the fmj) is what kills the accuracy. My savage likes the 20 grain gamepoints but I still feel like it could do better. Would try the fmj but for what I use my 17hmr those wouldn't do well.

  • @markdumas6387
    @markdumas6387 Před 5 lety +2

    Savage is more accurate, I have both. This round does not like the wind. My 2 cents.

  • @smartass6071
    @smartass6071 Před 2 lety

    Groups look good but why are you not hitting the center ring?

    • @AlaskanBallistics
      @AlaskanBallistics  Před 2 lety

      1) These are terrible groups.
      2) there was a crosswind and the 17 bullet is so small that it's easily affected by it
      3) the rifle was signed in for a certain type of ammo to hit center

  • @mikescooling

    Doing a test like this on a windy day, makes the test void, these super light bullets are known for being blown around

    • @AlaskanBallistics
      @AlaskanBallistics  Před 7 lety

      410mossberg I kept mine simple and put one of the Nikon buckmasters II on it, it's a good scope for the money and with the BDC I can shoot 300 yards with the 17 HMR. since I've chronograph the round I can know my exact drop with the BDC and Nikon's spot on app
