What a beautiful day it is, and the town is lovely. I would much like to stay there for a while. (I'm dreaming again Chris 😊) Oana looks wonderful, she seems so sweet.
It was, Lolly, and Saffron Walden is a wonderfully historic place. I always encourage anyone to visit. It would be worthwhile And thanks regarding, Oana. She is!
What a lovely market town. Oh I miss England so much. It is very sad knowing I will never go back again. However, I will be able to live vicariously through your videos Chris! Please do more! Blessings, Virginia. ❤️🇨🇦
I hope you do get a chance to return, but I`m pleased these walkabouts fill that longing for you. :)
@@HauntedEarth Thanks Chris…seems like TOWIE. Lol. I really enjoy all your videos and visits to places I have never been. I have been all over the UK but not these beautiful towns. ❤️
What a gorgeous area and the Church? Magnificent! My favorite was thee older area, the church and the gardens. Otherwise too crowded for me. Thank you Chris and Oana!
And thanks, Kari for commenting. Pleased you enjoyed. It is a busy town and out of all in Essex, it is my favourite.
Gorgeous town and church. Another lovely place to live in. Thank you for the walking tour. I really enjoyed it.
Thanks, Lorraine! :)
Thanks Mr Halton. 🇦🇺🇦🇺✝️✝️🇦🇺🇦🇺
Pleased you enjoyed :)
Good.
Attn: Lorraine & Kari, We're going to have to make blue plaque for Chris' house given he's a CZcams legend now. :D Lovejoy! Yay!!! What a fun show that was. Season 1-5 my favorite with Lady Jane. Thanks Chris!
Lol! I wish. Yes, I loved, Lovejoy. It was filmed in my area. :)
Never knock the charity shops, I got an amazing pair of heavy brocade curtains for under a tenner today 🤣 Another great walk about 👍🏻
You did exceedingly well there, Patricia :)
What a lovely small town. I love the church. I try to imagine what it looked in medieval times; all color and incense. What is seen now is its beautiful bones. Someday, it would be nice to walk these venues in person instead of virtually. Thank you for the lovely tour.
Thanks for your kind comments, Christine.
WONDERFUL HISTORY TOUR AROUND THERE CHRIS, I LIKED THE OLD ARTISAN CRAFTSMANSHIP OF THE WOODWORKING AND STONE MASONRY ALONG WITH THE BEAUTIFUL STAINED GLASS IN THE CHURCH , GREAT STUFF MY FRIEND 👌
As always, thanks, Tim for your kind and supportive comments. Really appreciated!
To say that was exquisite is a massive understatement! Where I used to live? Which was near to Dartmouth, it had a pup very much like the Cross keys hotel! I do not know how long it had been a pub sadly! but it was just as magnificent inside as it was outside! Saffron Walden is a stunningly beautiful place! I used to go to d'Oxford before it became IWM I wish I had visited this beautiful place! thank you for that delightful tour!
So pleased you enjoyed, Nigel. :)
Looked like a very nice day. I do want to get a camera like yours, very stable.
Thank you for sharing!!!
You should! Its a DJI Action 2.
These walkabout videos are brilliant. They are an important document. imagine if youtube had been around 40 plus years ago and we had videos from then like this. its good you are preserving them today for future generations. Well done.
Thank you!
Enjoyed the video very much and thanks for your time to put up here. I've been there a few times (as an Essex boy myself), as I was inspired by Alec Clifton-Taylor's BBC program, 6 English Towns (well worth a watch, if not seen).
In case no one has mentioned it yet, or you remain unaware, Jack Cardiff was mainly a cinematographer and worked on many great films (The African Queen/A Matter of Life and Death are just 2) and worked with many of the greats (Hitchcock/Monroe/Chaplin etc) and won 2 Oscars and certainly worth a blue plaque.
Thanks, Vaughn. Very much appreciated your comments. It is a lovely old town. I think I mention Jack Cardiff. Interesting man.
I see that building all the time.
Beautiful Church.
Absolutely! :)
Medieval Church.
A Really Lovely Place Chris. x
It really is!
Awesum watch again
Thanks, Steve.
Amazing! Please do Bishop's Stortford next! We have many many hauntings and a medieval high street on a hill.
I am looking at shooting a walkabout ghost tour soon, so who knows? :)
Bishop's Stortford Castle.
The front of the library was the Corn Exchange. The Literary & Scientific was next door down King Street. The County Library moved there from Church Street when the Lit & Sci wound up. The County Council was persuaded in the 70s not to sell the Corn Exchange, but to merge it with the Library next door.
Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850) was The Founder of the first new Metropolitan Police Force at Scotland Yard in 1829.
He was a Home Secretary & a Prime Minister.
Regin of Her Majesty Queen Victoria 1837-1901.
Lovely capture of the Essex town went to a NT place nearby, great stuff from you two.
We are blessed to have such wonderful places in UK. Can't wait to visit Essex in 2 weeks.
I`m sure you`ll have a great time, Chellie :)
Cressing and Bradwell I hope. And hopefully back to my old home at Bury soon. Thanks again for all your amazing work. And Buna to Oana 😊
Very nice Chris. I must have driven through this town dozens and dozens of times, often on the way
to Audley End, but only stopped on a couple of occasions. The last time to visit the museum to donate
something I had found. My mother was billeted in Saffron Walden during WWII, when she was stationed at
RAF Debden, and Castle Camps. We are really enjoying your tours of Essex towns.
When did you film this ?
Thanks, really appreciated. It was filmed a few days before publication.
My beautiful hometown where I still live today so much history, thank you for the video
Our pleasure! Really pleased as a local that you enjoyed, Carol!
Saffron Walden Union Workhouse was built between 1835 and 1836, and could accommodate 340 inmates. The architect was James Clephan who also designed workhouses in Ampthill (Bedfordshire) and Wellingborough (Northamptonshire). The building was mostly three storeys and based on a cruciform plan (after Sampson Kempthorne's model plan of 1835) with round-headed, small-paned, cast iron windows. It was built of yellow stock brick with a corrugated asbestos roof, replacing slate, and decorative brick courses. It had a large entrance block with a clock between two windows at the top. To the rear, accommodation wings radiated from an octagonal supervisory hub with men accommodated in the west wing, women in the east, boys in the north, and girls in the south. In 1846 an infirmary, washhouse and laundry were added in the north-east yard. Four fever wards were also added in October 1848, which allowed the workhouse to accommodate 400 people. There was a separate casual ward to the south-west with a row of cells along each side, lit by small round windows. The workhouse later became St James' Hospital under the National Health Service and then Saffron Walden Community Hospital. The workhouse has now been converted to residential accommodation with a hospital built adjacent to the site. Grade II listed.
Lovely trek about this historical town! Thanks for posting!
What a lovely market town
My favourite!
Great video!! I live in saffron walden and grew up here! I just thought i would tell you about the names and dates, stratched into brick walls either side, at 45mins, the alley way opposite the church, you walked down and some of the dates are from as far back as late 1700s!
Every time I walk down that alley, I always have to have a quick look
Hi Chris, a respectful EVP analysis at 0.25x video speed brought out this, referring to Danes visiting the town, back during the 7-800s, and to yours truly:
6:59 'Der er Völven' ('There's The Völve'), 'He's wonderful', 7:09 'Odins herre'/'Odin er herre' ('Odin's gentleman'/'Odin is Lord'), female answers 7:11 'Ja, det er han' ('Yes, that he is'), 7:12 'Tore, hi', 7:19 'Flyt dig!'/'Skynd dig' ('Move!'/'Hurry!'), 7:20 'Han kørte taxi' ('He drove a taxi'), 'Der er han' ('There he is'), 7:49 'Han er The Völve' ('He is The Völve'), 7:51 'Hvorfor er den dér Völve kommet til England?'/'Hvorfor skal den der Völve altid blande sig?' ('Why has that Asatru shaman come to England?'/'Why must that Völve always interfere?'), 7:54 'Help me!'/'Helping me'. Now the loud vendor shouts again, and it sounds like:
8:04 'Hil Odin!' ('Hail Odin!'), a female says 8:05 'Det passer' ('That's true'), another woman says 'Nej, det gør ikke' ('No, it doesn't'), now a male says 8:06 'Jeg vil ha' seid med Völven' ('I want magic with the Völve'), 8:09 'Jeg skal gå i Völvens sejd-spor' ('I shall follow in the magic tracks of The Völve'), the Old Norse word 'seid' means spells and curses.
8:14 'Jeg er ved at blive grønnere, end Völven' ('I'm becoming even greener than The Völve'), 8:16 'Herligt ved landsbyens gadekær' ('Lovely by the village pond'), 8:20 'Jeg har set et spøgelse' ('I've seen a ghost'), 8:24 'Det' skide fjollet' ('It's bloody silly'), 8:25 'Kærlighed' ('Love'), 8:26 'Borgeren til Helvede' ('The citizen to Hell'). Now at Devil's Lane, a faint male voice speaks in Danish:
15:36 'Det er Völven' ('It's The Völve'), now a female voice 15:37 'Djævelen bor i Jerusalem' ('The Devil lives in Jerusalem'), male again 15:38 'Djævelens fjende' ('The enemy of the Devil'). Another ruder spirit comments on the architecture:
16:06 'For Helvede, mand, det er mægtigt fint' ('Hell, man, it's mighty fine').
In this sort of crowd EVP, where another language is spoken, when we listen to the video at a very slow pace, the phenomenon seems to happen through unconscious spiritual possession, a slight trance-like state, just temporary and not harmful.
The second sort of EVPs here seem directly spiritual in nature, class A type, coming 'out of thin air'.
The Internet dimension is a parallel to the afterlife in the sense that it's a non-physical dimension, consisting of electromagnetism, only light/darkness and sound, energy only, as with the spiritual dimensions. Thank you
The Völve
Thanks, Heid for your analysis.
Essex Union Workhouse.
In 1834 the government made a new law and this time gave the workhouses to the Union Workhouses. These workhouses covered larger areas, meaning that everyone had the chance to gain shelter and work, not just those in the largest parishes. However, these became more like prisons than charities.
I've watched about 4 of these so far. Love them. Thanks! 👍🙂
There is an old school near a water tower on top of the hill and along that road and scattered around they look very very nice in not sure when they are build but they look amazing
Maybe the school is haunted also it's abandoned I think they might be doing something to it soon
Something to look into. Thanks, Yoda :)
Very interesting video Chris, very well narrated and made me think about going to this place for a photo shoot myself. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, again, Barmy!
Saffron Walden Poor Law Union was formed on 6th April 1835. Its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians, 31 in number, representing its 24 constituent parishes as listed below (figures in brackets indicate numbers of Guardians if more than one):
Saffron Walden's Chief Constable William Campling.
He was shot in both the legs, whist returning home from the eight bells after having a drink!
Jack Cardiff was the man, hope you look him up and give him some respect 🙏, love the videos. Take care.
I have since reviewed him, and I am a fan. Thanks, Andyspet. :)
Question:
What did the people use to paint the tudor buildings that pinkish color? It's just unusual, at least to me, so pink. It's on the buildings on Gold Street at 12:18 and 13:48 and also on the interior walls at Marney Tower (like at 6:38 Layer Marney Tower, Essex).
How terrible that they're using that man's tomb as a desk (31:15).
Hi Betsy. That pink is an oft used favourite here in East Anglia. I think that tomb had leaflets.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. 19th December 1843.

In Saffron Walden there's a Dorringtons Bakery shop.

A Tudor long hall built in 18th C?? What a rum thing!
It would be if I knew what precisely you are referring to? Many of what I had seen was a judgement based on known architecture and I accept I can sometimes be wrong.
Omg 😅😅😅
I may have missed it in a previous walkabout, but will you please explain why the brass may have been removed from those memorials?
Oh-you do mention "religious vandalism and theft." When might that have occurred and why was it so presumably easy? Off with their heads!
The brasses were either stolen by thieves for the scrap value, or by protestant zealots who may have deemed them as too frivolous.
@@HauntedEarth Ah-thank you for the reply! I'm an oblivious American.
Oliver Cromwell b1599 stationed his soldiers and their horses INSIDE the church during the 16th Century. Oliver Cromwell was one of the strongest advocates of the English Reformation 16th Century and the break with the Papacy in Rome, when the English Church broke with the Catholic church in Rome.THAT is why the brasses were removed and missing and the stained glass windows were destroyed in our beautiful church.
Police Station.
Fire Station.
Its beautiful i agree. But its corrupt as .... if your rich...great... if your not.... out you go .. theres a lovely market square. Its pretty. I know a few people there....not all is as it seems
was poppie with you ?
Not that day. She was at home as it was too hot to take her.
Sadly it’s turning into bishop stortford
I lived there from 1977 to 2011, and can honestly say that you have only done the "touristy" bits here, delve deeper and you find out about the branch line that ran through it, the Limekilns on Thaxted Road and the Isolation Hospital on Hill Top Lane, plus more on interesting places like Seven Devils Lane and Burnt Woman Plantation...
A C- for this Mr Halton, could do better...
Well, I was there on the odd chance. It wasn`t a fully researched doc, and considering all of that - plus I don`t live there, it wasn`t so bad. A `P` for being petty.
@HauntedEarth yeah, can tell it wasn't fully researched... says it all really. You even missed obvious things that even non-residents know. A visitor to the Parish Church is made aware of the burial place of Lord Butler in the churchyard and the remains of the Norman Market Cross built into the base of the South Porch. Did you know about the house that moved? No, it was right behind you when you were looking at Myddleton Place!! And for someone who claims to have an interest in the Paranormal, I'm surprised you didn't stand outside Hill House at the top of the High Street, Walden's 2nd most haunted building after the Cross Keys Hotel. Nor did your lack of research point you towards the top left of the common opposite the castle to the site of the old ducking stool pond, did it..
So, along with your totally predictable reply (I know you of old) it's now a Z for effort, or the lack of more like...
@@colcester Seriously! I have already explained the context of our visit, so we`ll leave matters there.
19th Century 1800s, Victorians Era Medicals.
They were not as talanted like they are today in the 21st Century.
