The Mysterious French Medieval Gothic Cârța Monastery, Transylvania #history #medieval #monastery
The Cârța Monastery, located in the Țara Făgărașului region of southern Transylvania, Romania, has a rich history. Here are the key points:
It was founded by Cistercian monks from Igriș Abbey, Burgandy (a daughter house of Pontigny Abbey) around 1202-1206.
Although Idris no longer exists, Pontigny has many striking structural similarities to Cârța.
The exact founding date of the Cârța Monastery, a source of intrigue and allure, remains a mystery. A document dated 17 April 1418, issued by Sigismund, King of Hungary, vaguely states that the monastery was founded, built, and awarded rights and privileges by his predecessors. Cistercian documents from the 13th to 15th century mention the monastery's founding somewhere around 1202-1203.
The Cârța Monastery, a beacon of cultural significance, played a pivotal role in introducing and developing French Gothic art in the region, a testament to its enduring influence. In fact, the ruins are the most easterly example of Gothic medieval architecture in Europe.
Originally constructed of wood, the Cârța Monastery underwent a significant architectural evolution, transitioning to stone constructions with a small chapel and massive walls, a testament to its enduring presence and adaptability.
The fortified Evangelical-Lutheran church in Hălmeag, Transylvania, was built in the second half of the 11th century. It illustrates the transition phase from Romanesque to Gothic under the Cârța Cistercian monk's influence there. It is the second oldest church in Transylvania and after that of Cârța.
After the Mongolian invasion in 1241, a new architect gave the monastery mature Gothic forms.
An edict in 1494 disbanded it, and part of the ruins later became an Evangelical Lutheran church belonging to the local Saxon community. Here is how it looks inside today, and the French influence inside reflects that of Pontigny Abbey.
Part of the ruins were given over to a cemetery for soldiers who died in the First World War, and the local Saxon community keep the graves and surroundings well maintained.
Cârța Monastery is also known for its mysterious atmosphere. Local legends say the place is haunted by monks who lived here in the Middle Ages. It is said that the chairs move, the walls vibrate, and priests who have served here have observed paranormal phenomena.

I went there today the cd player turned on and music was playing
In case our American friends are wondering…. Commonwealth forces like Uk, Australia, New Zealand etc hand out medals and ribbons for legitimate recognition.
Rumoured Zhukov was filmed laughing and sharing a joke with Eisenhour and Montgomery in Berlin at the Official German Surrender and the notoriously distrustful Stalin held that against him
Mr. Bean is that you?
Quentin Tarantino's cousin
Not captain the rank would be flight lieutenant
Whats this for?
Ya it’s all gallant but he got over 100 sailors killed for nothing. But he got his VC. What did the parents of these kids get?
Fascinating, and amazing that the BBC did such a sensible and thorough investigation. Thank you.
Stalin would have been suspicious of his own mother. Talk about a paranoid SOB, that was Stalin.
Gloworm was a Destroyer, not a Cruiser

What is the tragedy is with all the millions of deaths in ww2 on both sides and allies we are here again and nobody is fighting for a very few
Im very saddened by the derogatory comments. If you knew Chris and his level of integrity noone would question it
Oh my goodness.... I lost you at some point in the past & very pleased to see you again
Amazing content! Great research!
Thanks for your sacrifice ❤️
So what?
How do you know he had a large smile on his face at that point?
The "G" is silent. FYI.
He was just 22???? Bloody hell, most 22 year olds these days are terrified of you using the wrong pronouns for them!
Imagine a 22 year old today being that mature and educated
needs a part 2 for 2024
And as always, western perverted BS truth about Stalin that never happened. First of... Stalin never rode that horse, because he sustained injury to his hip from assassination attempt, which happened before WW II started. When Stalin told Zhukov about Victory Parade, Zhukov insisted that Stalin would ride that stallion, but Stalin replied: "Riding a horse is a task for a young men or a cavalry man, I am neither". Zhukov on the other hand was experienced cavalry man. White horses which were used on that parade, did not belong to Zhukov, nor Stalin. They were property of soviet state and were used during high priority ceremonies such as military parades and greeting of a foreign state leaders! General Rokossovskiy, who was parade's commanding officer, also rode almost identical to Zhukov's, white horse.
😊You know lots more then I..😊 Hence I keep learning..Thank You..One Castle lucky to see,, For Real
Many if not most German kreigsmarine were not of the prevailing National Socialist Worker’s Party.
Not true at all. Read Zhukov memory book.
The uniform is not for a group captain. It looks to be Wing commander
He was likely promoted after the photo was taken!
I think it was Goering who referred to the Beaufighter as "The Whispering Death"
Is there where the Japs got it from?
Whispering death.
Trolling before the invention of the internet. I love these moments 😂
This story CHANGES EVERY TIME.. no one knows the actual truth anymore
My dad was an RCAF Flying Officer, and having trained very early was soon sent to the UK and seconded to the RAF. He spent all but the last 2 months of the war in RAF night fighter squadrons, mainly on Beaufighters and then Mosquitos. His brother, 3 years younger, joined the RCAF as soon as allowed, and was trained on multi-engine planes, finishing as an RCAF Pilot Officer. He too was sent to the UK, and flew 20 bombing trips on RAF Wellingtons. He was then transferred to an RAF Halifax squadron. According to my Dad, his younger brother said the Halifax was a "bloody awful excuse for an aircraft" - and he was a very mechanically minded young man, while my dad was not. He also was not happy with the servicing and repair of the squadron aircraft, which from various letters and log notes sounds like it was not up to the high standard of the Wellington squadron, or of the Lancaster squadrons "next door." There must have been some pretty sketchy maintenance work; he was not given to complaining. He completed 16 trips flying the Halifax over Germany. On his 17th trip, his aircraft was shot down by Luftwaffe night fighters near Nuremburg, Aug 9 - 10, 1943. The crew were all killed in the crash. He was just 2 weeks short of his 21st birthday. He and his crew were buried near Nuremburg, but after the war their graves, along with several others, were moved to a single Commonwealth War Graves site about 60 miles from Munich. My dad survived the war, all of it in night-fighters. More than once his aircraft was damaged while landing in very bad weather. Unusually, he and his Navigator/AI operator managed to remain paired as a crew until the final 2 months of the war. He flew well over 1200 hours on operations (one of four logbooks is missing) - but he was rated as an "Exceptional" pilot by his C/O's, as well as being very skilled as a Night Fighter. His Navigator, an AI expert, described some astonishing incidents to me. Neither man was ever wounded by enemy fire. He de-mobilized in 1947, in Canada, and died in his sleep, age 71; his Navigator lived to the ripe age of 106, not far south of Lincoln. They remained good friends for the rest of their lives, and traveled on long holidays several times. A kinder end than too many of these brave young men.
Thank you for sharing your Dad`s service. What exceptional men they were, and sadly men of that ilk are no longer with us, You are rightly proud, and so you should be.
What is the point in flagging this up? We don't need this pushing in our faces all the time. Please, please, stop, we don't want this digging up all the time, and i'm as patriotic as anyone, but this doesn't help. WW2 was a tragedy for the world, it's been 80 years leave it alone guys, we DON'T need this!
I am surprised that Stalin didn't have the hourse shot after the fall.
The Halifax's used to get hammered, they couldnt fly as high as the Lancasters unfortunately,Elvington in yorkshire is a brilliant museum, they have a Halifax there albeit its made from more than 1 plane, when you see it its hard rto comprehend that these young lads flew all the way to Germany (& back if they were lucky,if the Americans managed 25 missions they were retired but the English & the rest of the allies just carried on
an action of defiance... the NAZIS thought they were invincible.. he showed them.. that they could die too
and put a a middle finger to the Nazis..
A Few Lucky Generals, That Avoided Stalin's Infamous Purges In The 1930's, Were Trained In The Czar's Cavalry Before W.W.I . One Of The Things Stalin Said When Planning The Parade Was To Ask Zhukov If He Could Still Ride A Horse (He Could, Despite Being Surrounded By Modern Warfare.) And Thus Received The Honor.

22 years old ❤
They were at 30 Feet because of the weight of his Cahones!
AI text to voice over is so pathetic. It's Tri Colour you fools.
We were flying a light aircraft over this burial barrow recently. When I told my fellow pilot the story of the Roman ghost he became nervous! We headed south to Salcott over Devils Field. Same reaction. Some locals are very nervous about these locations!! John.FAI/BGA 51417.
How come there is not any film of this actually happening....the Germans filmed everything...
Too embarrassed!
The amount of medals on his chest 😅
Patton said the US fought on the wrong side. He was right!
