Saffron Walden is a picturesque, medieval town, in north-west Essex, 15 miles south of Cambridge.
If you're thinking of visiting or moving to Saffron walden you'll find many interesting historic buildings reflecting its wealth as a rural market town.
At the heart lies St Mary’s Church, the largest parish church in Essex. Fine examples of elaborate moulded plasterwork (pargetting), can be seen on the Old Sun Inn and the houses in Castle Street & Bridge Street. Also of note are the Eight Bells, the timber-framed Cross Keys, and the medieval building located at 1 Myddylton Place.
Saffron Walden Museum's collections are housed in one of the oldest purpose-built museum buildings in the country, completed in 1835. It includes mammoth tusks and mummies, an early Tudor bed and a natural history museum gallery. In the grounds of the museum are the ruins of the Castle Keep which dates back to the 1130s.
Bridge End Garden is on the north side of Saffron Walden. Careful restoration has replicated gardening techniques and designs typical of the Victorian era and brought the garden back to its full splendour. The wonderful hedge maze is of particular appeal to children. The path into the garden passes the Fry Art Gallery which houses a collection of works by a Great Bardfield group of artists who settled in the Essex countryside in the 1930s.
The attractive Common is the oldest of Saffron Walden’s open spaces and on its eastern side is the largest turf labyrinth still surviving in Europe. Children of all ages enjoy following the ‘path’ through the turf, which winds for about one mile within a circle 100 feet (30.5 meters) in diameter.

NICE😁😁😁
You're most welcome. Thanks for taking the time to connect. All the best to you.
Very nice video but the best medieval market town - in Essex, in England? If the latter surely somewhere like Ludlow is more spectacular. I know you wanted to concentrate on the medieval aspects but I love the Victorian houses, the water tower and the church. My favourite street is Gold Street with its wonderful examples of pargetting.
Hello there, thanks for your take on things. Well we've not yet encountered Ludlow, but now feel we should! All the best and thanks for dropping by.
My British ancestors came from there!!!!!!!!!! They lived on Foundry lane which is now Fairycroft rd. They left in the 1840's and some of the family stayed. Cameron from Canada
Hello there Cameron, so pleased to bring a little bit of your ancestors town to you, I hope it helped you to feel a little more connected to their lovely town! Best wishes to you.
Please more of England content! Next trip should be to Cumbria!!
Hello there SV, Thanks for dropping by, We'd certainly love to film some of Cumbria when we get the chance. All the best to you.
Hi LW 👋 !! Thanks for this lovely peaceful walk in Saffron Walden, so much variety to see along the way. The formal park was spectacular. The remains of the castle with the cores of the medieval walls is quite something too !! I notice good bird song throughout 🎼🐦👍 - I just uploaded a wee video with the bird song recorded on location. I was surprised to immediately get a “Copyright Claim” on the sound 😢 !! Cheers, Don 🙋
Morning Don, a pleasure to hear from you. Yes we found it an interesting and varied place, only an hour away from us in Leigh on sea but oddly we've only ever been there once before. Oh how curious a “Copyright Claim” on birdsong!! That's a bit surreal. I hope YT rectifies that. All the best to you.
My Aunty and Uncle lives in Saffron Walden.
Hope they're happy there Rob?
They are.
Thank you.

Great public gardens, very impressed. But having been through Bridge End Gardens I cannot help wondering where the bridge is?
Yes fascinating eh? You'll have to keep us posted if you find out!
It would be nice to have more of a chance to look at the plaster mouldings on the walls in the street leading up to the bookshop towards the end of the tour. Do you think you could do another video showing decorative & historic points of interest, please?
Hi Sarah, if we get back to those parts we'll certainly do that for you.
@@LivingWalks Oh Thankyou. All the best.

Got a job offer from a company close to this town. After seeing this video, I decided not to accept it. This town is nice and everything, but I would feel claustrophobic for how small is everything looks. Thank you for sharing this video.
Morning Matteo, it's a lovely little town but I do understand your sentiment. Hope you find another job offer in a place that's just right for you. All the best.

With all the fearmongering, worries, bustle in the big arrogant cities, places like this are a haven for the soul.
My advice (as we are planning on doing), leave the cities and find a nice little town somewhere that you can commute from if need be.
Cities are only good for nights out and work...They are no good for peace of mind.
Hi CD, I'm sure many share your sentiment. We wish you the very best of luck with your future plans.
