NEW CHIPPING GRIP! The CLAW! Video explaining the positives, negatives and modifications I’ve made whilst using this new grip! #golf #youtubegolf #chipping #shortgame #pga #golfcoaching #yips
I feel for you Lester, it is harder for me to bend over, but I have an old Rawlings 25 degree fairway metal that is becoming my chipping club. The longer shaft lets me stand a little more upright but it is, as you say a work in progress. Cheers from Texas. ⛳🏌️🤠
A lot of my golf is played with my son who has an excellent short game. His eyes light up when he's short sided over a bunker whilst I'm shaking like a shitting dog. I'm confident you'll put the work in and eventually look forward to it 👍
It must be very hard for you if you had a good short game and then you lose confidence. It's very good of you to do this video Bernie to explain things . Keep up with the great work . I love your videos .
So glad that you’ve found something that makes the game more enjoyable Lester! I’ll admit the first time I saw you use it I thought this might be the end😂 It does make sense for you though having watched you for years, but also agreed with Dan when you used it on that longer pitch shot. I’m sure with practice you’ll find there’s a distance where you’re comfortable with a traditional grip. Until then use whatever helps get the ball in the hole!
@@berniebarnesgolf Rooting for you!! About 10 years ago I had the yips. Bladed or chunked every chip and pitch. Forced myself to try flop shots no matter the situation. Once I pulled a few off (after many more chunks and bladed shots), my hands seemed to come back and been good ever since. Golf is hard and weird!!
Go see ,or watch Dan grieve lester , I’ve watched u for years with Dan and feel for u because I was exactly the same which made me pack in for 3 years now it’s best part of my game .all the best pal
I'm left handed but play right handed. Broke my hand some time ago and played a variation of that grip with all my clubs - I could push with the right hand but not grip. My handicap went down playing one handed and my swing plane was amazing. Struggled with 2 hands ever since lol. So anyway, for the longer chips try releasing the club out of your right hand - just use that hand to get the club toward or to the ball (controls the lag and turning the head over) and then only the left hand in the follow through. You get more control and power in the shot. I think it only works with left hand dominant (if you play right handed).
If i hit a bad period of chipping that is more than just a bad day on the course, i have found success with a 'baseball grip'. Hope you find a permanent solution that has you looking forward to your chips rather than not.
I have great admiration for your efforts to find a workable solution to chipping - keep going and you will end up with something that works for you, which is all that matters.
@@berniebarnesgolf I think a video on how to hit a hybrid properly would be interesting! I’m always torn between how to stand, do I set up like an iron shot (weight slightly on front foot) and hit down on it, or like a driver, weight on back foot and hit up on it? I guess it would depend on whether it’s tee’d up or not?
Great video and love watching your stuff along with Dan Hendrickson. You should try and do a colab with Dan Grieve like Rick Shiels and Jimmy Ballard have done. Would be amazing and well worth it, his chipping technique is next level.
@@berniebarnesgolf Maybe if you get together with Dan, you two could do something with him. It would be worth your while at least sending him a message and see if he's interested. You never know unless you ask.
Good luck with the new grip or any other grip changes you’re experimenting with. Golf is definitely hard and we all need to constantly work on it. Cheers.
The claw works really well for JB on the chip and runs, so no reason it can't work for you. As you say confidence is key! I bought Dan Grieve's 3 releases book and and am practicing his technique. Tough at mo, but I get the principle so going to stick with it. Problem as we all know is transferring it to course when nerves kick in! Good luck mate
Normal grip , open the face by pre cocking the wrists , set the club where it hangs comfy (low point) and about an inch behind the ball ( do not hover) Then just cut the club under the ball , adjust swing length to suit distance or obstructions . Pops up plops down , tight lies low runout , fluffy lies more run out 🤷🏻♂️
Thinking outside the box, would Golf Pride's new reverse-taper grip, though designed for putters, help your chipping? Less extreme, maybe no-taper grips would help. Cheers!
Lester.... I teach youngsters and the best method I've found is................ the best way that works for YOU,we will all find a way that works for us and just STAY with it,why is anyone else's way of doing things right 🤔, what is right is what works for you...phew I'm glad I got that out there, not one size fits all. 🌟🎊🤩🥳
Have you played around with bounces on your chipping wedge? Maybe a high bounce that you know you can throw at the ground might help take the thins out?
@@berniebarnesgolf I’ve just changed too - I’ve always played a super low bounce but have just gone to an 8 degree cobra wedge so there was less margin for error, but you may even find a 12 or 14 like Dan uses might be what you need.
I tend to use my 50/52 wedge for a 30yrd shot especially into wind to keep the ball down but I also pay around with my wedges for all sorts of shots and I think it’s just practice Bernie but I don’t practice enough really
You've gone down the rabbit hole for sure. Lucky you don''t play on grainy surfaces. For me, the only thing makes me better is more frequent practice. Even hitting 20 foam practice ball chips inside each day makes a huge difference.
@@berniebarnesgolf I love Occam's razor..... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam's_razor . Summary "The simplest explanation is usually the best one". Which for me, means more practice in the hope that it builds confidence and consistency.
Another nice one, with Paul you were doing some great chipps, do not worry every thing will be alright on the night.
I’m ok when I’m practicing, but a different story under pressure!

I’ve chipped with a wood before, but it tends to be the lofted clubs and shots over hazards I really struggle with Michael.

Cheers Jeff! It’s annoying as I hit the ball better these days! If only I could have put the two together 😂 thanks for the support.
I find turning the left foot out, say 10 o'clock, helps keep the body out of the way on the longer chips. Good luck
I stand almost side on for the longer chips / pitches now.
Good and HONEST video Lester. Keep up the good work
Thanks so much.

@@berniebarnesgolf no problem buddy. 👍🏻👍🏻
I've often felt that a change would help your chipping, best of luck
That’s what I’m hoping! It normally works for a few weeks and then doesn’t 😂

Consider James Wiltshire video as this solved my issues. That clip half way through, attack angle is nowhere near where it needs to be

Thanks Briar, I actually hit full shots with a baseball grip!
Good to try something new. Think it can work as you say round the green.
Absolutely Richard! We keep trying 😂
Thanks Bernie. I am a terrible chipper but I’m sticking with Dan Grieve’s method and seeing some improvement. Regular practice is the answer eh?

I carry a 69 degree and use it to great effect, you must use your wrists and the bounce when chipping.
I’m looking at wedges with more bounce currently.
Stuff of nightmares that 🤣🤣
