    Metronidazole's spectrum of activity is against anaerobic and microaerophilic bacteria, as well as some protozoa. It should not be used for a fungal infection of the skin. A source of possible confusion is that topical metronidazole can be used to treat bacterial vaginosis (caused by bacteria) and trichomoniasis (caused by protozoa), both of which can be easily mistaken for yeast infections.

    I dont get it. You say vancomycin is so expensive, but I checked the prices in our small Czech republic and the prices are not nearly that high, reaching anywhere between 120 to 160 euro for a ten day treatment with 1g per day. I am one of those penicilin alergics, so it was of interest XD. Also, as a place with health insurance for everyone, the patient pays only half the price. Does that make a different, I dont know, regulations the drug needs to meet in the US, or is it only overpriced silly from the farma company? Why is the difference so large?

      American drug prices are much higher than in most parts of the world. I just checked the current drug prices for oral vancomycin. Depending on brand, out of pocket costs run $31 to $103 per 125mg capsule. So for a mild case of c.diff colitis, the recommended 10 day course of 125mg 4x/day would cost a minimum of $1240 (1140 Euros, as of today) for a patient in the US who did not have health insurance. I believe that's actually cheaper than when this video was originally recorded.

    just wanted to point out that there is an update for the guidelines on C. diff

      Thanks for the comment! At some point, I'll need to make a whole video on C.diff, but the evidence/guidelines keep changing - I feel like it will be obsolete before it's even posted!

    I have persistant urethritis that didn't respond to almost all antibiotics (tried doxycyline, cipro, fosfomycin etc), i did have oral sex before it broke out, is it possible that its caused by anaerobes? what are the right antibiotics please help

    • @StrongMed
      @StrongMed  Před 2 lety

      I'm very sorry, but I can't offer specific, individualized medical advice here; and I recommend you speak with your own physician regarding your concerns. However, I will say that anaerobic bacteria would be a very unusual causes of urethritis, and not all urethritis is caused by an infection.

      @@StrongMed If my doctor prescribe me Clindamycin does it penetrate the prostate well? Because urethritis has progressed to prostatitis 3 weeks ago! I can’t find if it does penetrate well anyway
