Comparison Review: Nissan Rogue Platinum vs Mazda CX-5 Signature / Oldest vs Newest Compact SUVs

  • For the longest time, I have always recommended the Mazda CX-5 because it’s spacious, drives very well, and has a cabin full of high quality materials. However, it is now 5 years old so can it still keep its crown against the updated Nissan Rogue? The Rogue has more interior space, bold new looks, and packed with more technology than its predecessor. So how do these SUVs stack up?
The Mazda CX-5 is available with two engines. A naturally aspirated 2.5L 4-cylinder and a turbocharged version of the engine. This Signature CX-5 has the latter and this turbo engine can produce up to 250 hp & 320 lb-ft (186 kW / 434 Nm). However this engine is not comparable to the engine under the hood of the Nissan Rogue. Instead, a more comparable engine would be the base 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder that produces 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque (139 kW / 252 Nm).
By comparison, the Nissan Rogue comes equipped with just one engine for the 2021 model year. A naturally aspirated 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that produces 181 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque (135 kW / 245 Nm). The 2022 Nissan Rogue is available with an optional 1.5L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine on all trim levels except for the base S FWD trim. This new engine produces 201 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque (150 kW / 305 Nm).
The 2021 Nissan Rogue starts at $28,498 CAD ($26,050 USD). This 2021 Nissan Rogue Platinum starts at $39,998 CAD ($35,830 USD) with the Platinum trim of the Nissan Rogue 2022 receiving a $2,000 CAD price jump. The 2021.5 Mazda CX-5 starts at $29,200 CAD ($25,370 USD) for the base GX trim (Sport in USA) with this top spec Signature Mazda CX-5 costing $42,950 CAD ($37,505 USD). The Mazda CX-5 2022 also receives a price hike but it is only $400 CAD for the top spec Signature trim.

I test drove both and bought the Rogue. I'm old enough now and drive short distances only when I have to, so I'd rather have the comfort, better view, bigger touch screen, and more space than the 'driving experience'. And honestly, the driving experience is still fun in the Rogue. The engine is more than willing and it's very light on it's feet, so it's not that big a sacrifice. Like going from a 9 to an 8... etc.
As far as the CVT, they've completely re-engineered it, the consumer complaints since 2017 have dropped off, and you get a great warranty.
As far as the 1.5L-T... Nissan has been putting reliable turbos on reliable small engines for decades now. The grandfather of this engine began it's life in the early 2010s, and ended up in a Le Mans race car producing 400hp.

Couldn't get over 3k rpms, changed the tranny fluid with Nissan TF, and didn't have many issues for over a year, besides the whiney noise and a little jumpy at times....Then things got worse over time. Not reliable, didn't have the confidence in it to take it more then 50 miles at a time. Purchased a 2022 C50 carbon, today and love it so far. Ok let’s peal back some skin on this Apple vs orange comparison. I gather the Mazda feels sportier not just because of what makes it so but that turbo vs the Rogue’s naturally aspirated engine makes a huge driving difference!
Now, if I read it correctly the Rogue gets 4 miles per gallon better fuel economy than this Mazda. This stands out as does a review I just read on the 22 new Rogue’s engine the 1.5 l turbo 3 cylinder.
It apparently gets 4 miles per gallon fuel economy better than it’s iteration year 2021 Rogue!
If my math is correct that 2022 Rogue out does the 2021 turbo Mazda by 8 miles per Imperial Canadian gallon!
Young man I hope you can afford that gap and I wasn’t even thinking of the resent gas increases we’re having.
Apparently the 21 and 22 Rogue’s CVTS are better operating but will they be more reliable than the “similar” older ones that were crapping out?
Time will tell. You mentioned the Mazda had enough leg room for your six-4 frame. Did the bottom cushion extend far enough to bolster your under thighs? Just wondering.
Unless Mazda has lengthened the front seat lower portion I think the answer is a resounding no.
Other than those points a very good review. A breath of fresh air review actually.
    Keep it up young man!
    Go Ni.

Never will I ever trust a cvt. It’s like trusting cylinder deactivation. Just waiting for it to break something expensive. It’s why I went 2022 Mazda CX-5 turbo signature. Other than that Nissan also feels cheap and feels like I could break stuff very easily. Let alone when you squeeze on some panels on the Mazda it doesn’t move an inch, in the Nissan Rogue premium it sounds like your squeezing a console controller. Just makes lots of noise. Also highway sound dampening was a very big thing for me. Nissan let’s in way more ambient noise than the cx-5 or rav 4 I tested out before making my decision. Personally I’d you want best bang for you buck go base rav 4 hybrid best for MPG also some states give you tax rebate for plug in hybrids and some offer regular hybrid rebates. The 2021+ CX-5 gas tank has another hole that I’m positive is designed for a future plug in hybrid model. Ohh also cx-5 has the better infotainment. I hate touch screens. They get full of finger prints. I love the non touch screen design. It’s what sold me on the signature over the best rav 4 hybrid model. I believe it’s either prime or something like that. Anyway I’ll stick with CX-5 reliability and constantly being one of the best compacts (imo it’s the best). I’ve had a 2014 Mazda sport touring. (Has features from both) the 2022 model blew it out of the water. My wife dislikes the HUD but you can disable it. Therefore making her sole complaint irrelevant. Ohh she also hates the safety features because if someone break checks you the CX-5 applies full force to breaks. Even if you’re already applying more than enough to stop in time. I believe I can also change this to be less responsive but I don’t trust the wife driving. Very scary.

The extra hole you're referring to next to the fuel fill hole is for the DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) hole. In some markets (and even briefly in North America) the CX-5 was available with a diesel engine. I wrote a review about it a while back: mgreviews.com/review-2019-mazda-cx-5-diesel/
This generation of CX-5 probably won't get a hybrid powertrian but the new CX-50 is rumored to be getting one in the near future.

Comparing a Rogue (SUV) with CX-5 (Its more like a sedan than an SUV) is like comparing Oranges with Lemons. CX-5 can only take 4 people comfortably when compared to Rogue.
    - For 2022 CX-5 top trim when one divides 43,350 CAD by 4 people it comes to 10,837.50 CAD per person
    - For 2022 Rogue top trim when one divides 41,998 CAD by 5 people it comes to 8,399.60 CAD per person.
    - That means every person sitting in Mazda is paying 2,437.90 CAD more becoz CX-5 couldn't fit in that 5th person which means CX-5 is 9,751.60 CAD more expensive than Rogue.
    - I wouldn't pay so much if the only thing Mazda has is 49 bhp more than Rogue. Driving is not black n white whereas interior space is. Mazda might be good in driving but so is 2022 Rogue especially with the punch of new Turbo engine and more refined CVT than 2021 Rogue itself.
    - we shouldn't forget the 8 miles more mileage that 2022 Rogue gives compared to 2022 Mazda CX-5 especially when gas prices are hiking which makes CX-5 more expensive.
    - Few people complained about the cabin noise ... CX-5 doesn't give Panoramic Moonroof and the reason is becoz its affects cabin noise. We should wait till CX-5 comes out with Panoramic moonroof without increasing the weight of the car.
