It's been a while since Disney's Moana was first released, so I thought it might be a good idea to give this movie a small rewatch, review it and analyze some of the tropes it uses such as the Twist Villain trope or the Chosen One.
In this video essay, I will try to explain why Moana is one of Disney’s best productions of the last decade, as well as take a look how this movie utilizes its tropes and how it writes character arcs.
I would love to hear what you think about Moana and whether you enjoyed this video! Let me know in the comments below and feel free to like and subscribe.

Moana is one of my favourite Disney movies and I always loved the Te Fiti - Te Ka resolution, it really drove home the overarching theme of identity and how trauma can affect it.
I never realised that the other princess movies don't really show what the princesses are actually supposed to do, except be cursed. Being shown what Moana's duties are on the island and her attitude towards her role is a great dive into her identity and her place in the community.
And, I just realised, I think she's the only Disney princess who is actually a part of her community. IIRC most princesses are isolated from their communities, like Elsa & Anna stuck in the castle, Briar Rose living in hiding in the forest, or Belle being an outcast in her village and later kept prisoner in Beast's palace.
Another great video, thank you for your work ❤️

Im actually working on a video about one of the few princesses who actually do a lot of princess stuff, so I'm curious how you'll like it! But yeah, despite the princesses being a huge part of the Disney brand, most of them is a princess only in title (and sometimes not even that given that some of them have no ties to royalty whatsoever, like Mulan). Moana really is pretty unique in that aspect, no only is she an actual leader, but we see in detail what her duties are and how she handles them.
Thank you for taking time to comment and I'm happy you liked the video!

You've really put into words what I love most about Moana as a princess! The story seems to be the classic Disney tale we've seen over and over again, yet the approach Moana takes makes her stand out in such a subtle but important way. Wonderful video!

Thank you, I'm glad the video resonated with you so much! And agreed, it's subtle but it's amazing storytelling and I'm very glad this movie was made.
