Poor Bassanio needs cash - fast. How else can he woo the beautiful and wealthy Portia? Luckily, his best friend Antonio, a merchant, helps Bassanio out by striking a dodgy deal with a local Jewish money-lender named Shylock. Shylock agrees to lend Antonio the money on one condition: if he can’t pay back the money in three months, Shylock will take a pound of Antonio’s flesh, which would kill him! Will Bassanio win Portia’s hand in marriage? What will happen when Antonio can’t pay back the loan - will Shylock really demand a pound of his flesh?

But you got one MAJOR thing wrong.
In the trial scene, apart from the 2 laws, the main reason is that the bond says only a pound of FLESH. So Shylock cannot shed any blood or hair else he will die.
But otherwise, top notch. 😇🌈

@Radha Sajanikar That’s right! Like we mentioned at 5:46, it’s illegal for an outsider to shed a drop of Venetian blood. As you said, Shylock would need to shed some of Antonio’s blood in order to collect that pound of flesh. We’ve hinted at that idea here, but you can check out our Act 4 Summary on our website to learn about this in more detail. 😊

Thanks for your comment! Solanio, Salerio, Salarino… it’s hard to keep track of Shakespeare’s word-play! The video mentions a dialogue in Act 3 between Solanio and Salarino. Salerio isn’t featured in this video.
