I reckon 6x6 is one of the easiest. Especially for minimalistic stuff.
A lot or album covers were shot with a 6x6 Hasselblad.

Had this kit along with several others lenses I sold it to buy my wife’s engagement ring in 1993. I shot some incredible stuff with it. I still regret that decision but the marriage thing worked out well.

A few things as a fellow Hasselblad shooter: the Hasselblad straps are actually genius, they have a quick release function that's a better design than those peak design ones, you can buy the strap lugs which will let you use any strap you already own, I think I bought a pair for only $15-20.
Prisms aren't my favorite, though I'd definitely use one if you're using 6x4.5. 45° prisms are best imo though the angle makes vertical shots a little more awkward than a 90° prism. That's why I'd just say get an a12 back and just crop later.
80mm is a must with this system, super small, fast and renders dof beautifully.
Get an attachment that allows you to put the Darkslide in, Hasselblad has their "type IV" backs which are their latest version have a darkslide holder built in, though you can fit your existing one with an aftermarket version. But since you only have 1 back, you don't need to keep putting the darkslide back in, just keep it I'm your bag or something.
Hasselblad straps are really ingenious, however I don't like that they can rotate 360°. It's not a problem per se, it's just that to me it always happens that one side gets a turn more than the other and the strap gets tangled...
Apparently all Hasslblad shooters are contractually obligated to shoot abandoned motor homes. Nothing says uninspired more than these same shots over and over again.
Nothing better than the Hasselblad “plop-plop” shutter sound.
My 500 C/M is my all time favorite camera.
Ah, a young hasselblad owner, not yet burdened with expensive unused accessories, a large collection of pre loaded backs and never ending complaints about jamming.
I dont use the prism finder much. I cant be bothered to rewind but I recommend the focusing screen with a split prism, makes a world of difference. Lastly, I avoided the 80mm hype and started with a 50mm and 120mm and boy was I wrong, the 80mm is worth every grand. If you like high key lighting check out the 160mm oddity which is wonderfully saturated. I personally avoided the 501c era cameras and have a 503cw and 553ELX so it was interesting to see no complaints...
Standard advice you probably already know: Dont snap the backs on but hold the button to the side before.
Change the light seals in your back, especially your one as its 1960s era. Ive changed 11 backs and all of them had never been replaced and its easy to do
Is the early Chrome syncro 80mm C (without T*) worth buying? I saw a good deal for it $500. Should I do it?
@@ufukkiblat Optically the 80mm did not change much (if at all) between the various versions. The only changes are as you mentioned the multi-coating.
However do keep in mind the C and C T* lenses have the Compur shutter, which requires more frequent maintenance. It’s still a great lens, but you might need to factor in the cost of a CLA as well. The versions that followed came with the Prontor shutter, and the general consensus in the Hasselblad community is that they are more robust. Personally I think the CF version is a better buy!
I have both 80mm lenses a t* and an earlier one, can't really tell the difference but I only shoot B&W...
My 500C/M is my workhorse and when I’m out doing street photography I always keep it strapped. The simple leather one I have does not interfere with the dark slide like I thought it would. I would recommend being strapped tho
I always dreamed of owning an Hasselblad. I found my, or my hasselblad found me in a set with 4 lenses 3 view finders 2 Original Hasselblad shoulder bags and some more accesoires. It's in absolute mint condition and I used it pretty much now. I'm a big fan of the Hasselblad. Thanks for this video hope to see more in the future of the Hasselblad
Welcome to the Hasselblad club! The wonderful auxiliary shutter ‘clunk-flop’ is easily the most addictive sound in film photography.
Since you already have the 60mm 3.5, the 100mm 3.5 is probably a better focal length choice than the 80. The 100 is unbelievably sharp and well corrected, even better than the superb Mamiya 7 glass. If you have the opportunity to pick one up, it’s 100% worth it!
Thomas Heaton has some great videos using the 501c and he loves a square crop on an image so checkout some of his stuff to lose the shell keeping you from experiencing the greatness that is a square image!
I shot a lot of digital 645 on a 500 C/M, and lots of 6x6 film ... I got a 90 degree prism and it solved the vertical shooting problem. Definitely kills some of the ergonomic magic, but I guess it's better than be blindly hoping to hit focus on the WLF. I have to say: 6x6 black and white is at its ultimate peak on Hasselblads. It's just amazing.
Good extra gadget: I really love the dark slide holder that you can put on the film back. So you don't have to eat or mislay the dark slide.
Don't worry man, just wait a few more decades when you get your retirement funds, then you might be able to pick up a 500C/M body.
Aaaaand just as I was starting to think I'd be okay without buying a Hasselblad.

Those are still the best cameras they ever made. My first was a 500C and I've had a variety since. Like you, I wasn't overly excited about the square format, however it grew on me over time and I love it now. I do shot 645 but with an old H1 system which is really nice also. I'd still recommend trying to a 6x6 back if you have the opportunity, you may decide you like after all. Note: PME metered prism is a beautiful thing!

I have a 500C that has been with me since 1977 and I love it. It has taken many of my favorite images. Since it has so much history for me and I'd hate to have anything happen to it I recently added a 503CX. I love the 6x6 format but it does take some getting used to but once you go square it is hard to go back.
7:04 Literally happens to me all the time when I drive somewhere with the W114. So nice to see people having fun.

Yes to A16 backs, also look into getting the Hasselblad Acutte-Matte grid focusing screen. The grids line up to 645 crop and helps with leveling the horizon and are a little brighter than the standard focusing screen. And if you do get the gridded screen, definitely get the PM90 prism finder, it'll help with portraits and other vertical compositions.
I've recorded the sound of my Hassie's shutter and winding to use it as a message notification on my phone. Flop-flop, brrrrt. No regrets so far.

Bought my first Hassleblad CM (basically the same camera ) in 1974 at the beginning of my career. That very same camera was still operating on a regular basis thirty years later as I transitioned to digital. In the meantime thousands and thousands of rolls had gone through it ( and a few others in my kit ) working day after day with no breakdowns. Although it was an expensive initial purchase the payoff was immense. I still own a couple of bodies and several lenses, film magazines and other accessories etc. It won’t be long before this gear is 50 years old and still in operating condition !
How do you make that 3d image effect at the end of the video. It's so cool and I've always wondered how it's done.

This is done through after effects. It can take a long time depending on the photo to create the effect. Since he works in the movie industry, he could do this with his eyes closed.

@@ListenandLearnEnglish Nope. At least not with one dedicated piece of software that can do a good job of it. Why do you think Adobe can charge absurd subscription prices for their stuff? ;)
(I know there's some dedicated apps out there to create that sort of effect but they're all sort of gimmicky and afaik they don't work well for every photo, and in such cases you have almost no manual control over what goes on)

6x6 can take some getting used to, but when you get it, it’s great. I wasn’t aware of the 645 back. This is the first time in the 8 years I’ve been shooting my 500c and 203fe I’ve heard anyone mention these things exist. Thanks for that info, I just ordered one on eBay. Once you get used to it I would be very surprised if you haven’t fallen head over heals for it. Enjoy, and congrats on your new Hassie. Keep up the great work on your channel too.
The A16 back also is available in 4x4cm and there is a 35mm back, very rare though.
They make dark slide keepers too, both that stick on the back and others that have a lens keeper type string loop. They are very handy to free up your mouth or prevent the slides getting bent in your pocket.

I kept mine full mechanical, and got the plain, no meter prism finder.
It make shooting SOOOOOOO much easier. I might recommend you give one a try.
It sucks that it bulks it up, but I now catch so many more winner shots with the finder.
You can always take it off to switch back to waist level when you feel like it…

Great box, cool video! C has regular mirror, 501CM floating so it doesn’t cut off view with the longer lenses, 150-180 etc. So if you’re a long lens shooter, 501 or 503 is a better choice.
I also hate 6x6 despite owning a Rollei 2.8F. Very excited to discover you can shoot something other than 6x6 on a 501 as I agree it has the best shutter sound known to man! All of a sudden I need a new camera

Another great video from your channel! I started out with a yashica 35mm and gravitated to a M6. I then discovered medium format and once again - a yashica MAT24 then a Hassy 500cm. It took me awhile to get used to the square - but having the ability to crop to rectangle I felt gave me more options. Fast forward - after 15+ years of digital and discovering your channel [and several other channels of film enthusiasts] I finally dusted off the old Hassy [and some of my Father's Rolleis he left me], and got back into film. I haven't turned back, and I now appreciate the square, rarely do I crop. As far as a strap for the Hassy - check out tapandye. Pricey, but money well spent. Thanks again for keeping film alive..

yes, I have just started my first roll of Fujifilm pro 400H (now discontinued), but I love this feature (only on the CF\CFi\CFe lens lineup- the C's have a sawtooth protrusion, you pull this towards the body to 'decouple' the rings), this EV scale also allows quick lens changes, you can replicate exposure settings quick, just ev and one value, line this up to the white line atop the lens, there it is, perfect synchronisation between lenses.
You can buy adapters from the bayonet to every filter size. Also, there is a "handle" strap as well which doesn't interfere when using the camera.
Bajonted filters = 1 filter for all your lenses.
Screw on filters = 1 filter per lens because they all have a slightly different diameters
As for a strap, they work pretty well. When not used your camera will just pivot vertically and hangt neatly against your body. Although not using one myself, I prefer to just put it back in my bag after a shot and get is back out once I framed the next shot.

Twist the dial (lever?) on the film back to the closed position when loading the film as this makes a small, metal tab pop up on the pressure plate to feed the film under. Then rotate the dial back to the open position to lock the tab down (which will hold the film in place) for when you place the loader into the back, and finally twist the dial to the closed position obviously,

my hassy has a matte screen overlay with 645 ratio lines in it for framing vertically/horizontally so you can crop it in post. the square is a huge advantage because it takes in more of the scene and then you can just crop it down later!
Have fun, beauty of the A12 and shooting square is you can crop for horizontal or vertical when “ printing” plus for the A16 is four more shots per roll. Hasselblad has/had a clear mask that shows crop lines, yes, with practice you can reload a back fairly fast.
After you shoot square fir awhile you’ll find what compositions work best square. With the Nikon D850 I use the in camera square crop often.
Shooting with a Hasselblad is a joy. Been awhile since I’ve had mine out, but will again soon. Have owned new since 1981

If Hasselblad decided to restart production of the 500x series, that would be huge boon for film photography. I was an executive at Ilford, Cinestill or Kodak I would breath down their neck about this.

Welcome to the hassy fam! I love the black camera's. I own a chrome one, so if you ever thinking about a trade let me know ;). Anyway, the 645 mask came with the back, so i think its a original, but mine doesn't have the red lines so i figured there are different versions. The 654 back isn't so rare here in europe, so i picked up one right away and its great! If you store the back for a longer periode of time, take out the darkslide, so it doesnt wear down the seals to much. Hope you enjoy shooting it!
nice review from someone who's never owned a Hassy.. Refreshing, and nice video as well. Kind of funny that the one thing I LOVE about the Hasselblad is the waist level viewfinder! I've even added one to my Nikon F3.. But we're all different, and that's fine.
My dad used to work as a pro photographer, now retired. He used to shoot Hasselblad for studio work. The first thing I though of, when I saw the title of the video, was the shutter sound.
Again, a great video! Love to watch. It calms me down always. Gorgeous camera, own one (elm) myself, using it only seldomly, takes me eight minutes for each shot, while my kin prefers eight per second 😥.

The Hassie was always my dream camera till i HAD to use one. Loading definitely Medieval torture. Focusing even with Accu-mate screen(Minolta) was lovely and bright, still focusing impossible.(for me). Working without strap, makes camera unwieldly and prone to gravity test. (drum roll at execution by axe) . Lenses so expensive. So add load, focus, I bought a Rolleiflex Automat, easy as sucking fine wine. No lenses available! None, zero, nyet! Need filters for B/W and a lens shade. Roll of film and you have the system in the palm of hand.(with strap). I use square! Easy to crop. I have the 35mm adapter but never yet used.. Shutter noise drowns choir at wedding in the Hassie! Chasing away lovers of TLR a pest, that comes with beautiful cameras..
55 years ago Hasselblad was my first love. I married it and still use to this day.

I use a 2000fcm hasselblad. I like being able to use some of the faster f and fe series lenses on it. also I love using my a16 back on mine. awesome 2nd gen 4runner btw.
