Jason buys a TLR and proceeds to un-TLR everything about it.
Wouldn't expect anything less.
Jason is in his sexy bad boy era
Jason is a six member boyband concentrated into one Baxter Daddy
OMG Jason got a TLR!🤩 (proceeds to shoot 645 and with a prism finder 😶) Guess we'll just never see a square photo from him 😀
it’s like watching dad come home after a while just for him to grab a pack of smokes off the table and leave
Ironically, in a post sponsored by SQUAREspace!
Everybody forgets that he has, polaroid??
Lmao
You cannot use Squarespace as sponsor, when you're modifying a 6 x 6 camera!
gotta love this frist impression
Only Jason would find a way not to shoot 6x6 with a TLR.
20 years from now, when we're all watching "Best of Jason and Caleb" videos - 13:20 will be in the top 5.
Yes, embrace the square!
EDIT: Never mind...we'll get him some day...
🤣
Sales pitch: Jason, shoot square and crop later!
Jason is in his sexy badboy era, team fish
The light is absolutely stunning in all of these!
Holy shit. We all thought it was a typo! Ya got us, Jason. Ya fucking got us!
There are few channels i've watched every single video of, you are one of them. Inspiring and entertaining as always.
It’s always a good day when Baxter’s dad uploads.
The Rolleicord Va & Vb also offer the 6X4.5 adaptor (known as the 16 exposure kit), but pay attention to the type. The black set is for the Va, the set with the orange type mask is for the Vb - this is important as the mask for the viewfinder goes under the screen of the Vb, but on top of the screen for the Va and they won't interchange.
You can totally slam the black VA mask on the vb groundglass and tape it down
@@jenserwig1707it's possible yeah but it's janky and you run the risk of scratching the screen
Finally, a new double feature from Jason and Caleb!
This is the kind of camera content I'm looking for. Someone that isn't super up their own ass and just enjoys creating. Good stuff
I was sitting on the toilet earlier wondering when grainydays was gonna drop. My toilet prayers were answered.
When I saw the video I was so excited cause I thought there was no way Jason could shoot anything other than square in a Rolleiflex. I was disappointed. Someday you will realize square is the ultimate format from which all other formats hail. Someday...
"square is the ultimate format" - Yup, like the amazing Vivian Maier proved - She was truly the bomb
Someday we will all realize that our lenses produce the ultimate format: ROUND! Just like our eyes! We have all been lied to and cheated out of the whole image that our gear is capable of producing. Let’s join together and take back the photons that are rightfully ours! We want the whole pie and not just the center portion! Give me crust or give me death!
@@michaeldimmitt2188 - "take back the photons that are rightfully ours!" - So you want round binocular view photo's ?
Among many other things, that wastes a lot of photographic paper, requires new cutters and new frames...
wake up babe jason got his frist tlr
And its 645…. 😞
I’m glad I bought one before this video! Got the grey Rolleiflex T on eBay for a steal a couple months back! No clue why they were selling it for so cheap, because it’s in MINT shape and works like magic ✨
How much did you get it for if you don’t mind me asking?
Frist!
SECORNED!
Came here for this.
no way! i just got the Rolleiflex T as my first medium format camera a few months ago! its such a great little camera and far cheaper than the “better” 2.8 versions!
We're not worthy! We're not worthy! I see what you did there. You use cinematic theory in everything, your photos, your videos, you're everything. Awesome!
Babe wake up. Grainydays dropped a new frist impression video.
Babe wake up. Another uninspired babe wake up comment just dropped.
That kind of "babe wake up" comments are so stupid 😑
Love that you got yourself a TLR. I hope you try the square format more on your road trip. It's a great challenge for composition and you have grown as photographer a lot over the last few years.
Beautiful images as always, find the pastel pallet so pleasing, thanks for sharing.
Ahhh another great day to watch a video
Cool to see someone else using a Rolleiflex T. Loved using this in the studio.
My T was passed on to me by my grandpa. I'm always a little scared to take it to more demanding spots (weather and such) and tried substituting it with a chinese TLR. The latter broke, now I might try a Yashicamat or similar. Anyway, I absolutely love my Rolleiflex. Apart from one hickup from the shutter, It worked like a charm through every roll
Some freaking stunning images in this one but that first morning shot of Caleb is incredible!
This un-TLR'd everything about a TLR and un-Ektachromed everything about Ektachrome in one video.
Very painterly. love these shots personally
With you, every adventure is better than the previous one!!!
I had a rolleiflex t that someone gifted to me, but i've always struggled with 6x6, bought the 16 exp mask, and now i'm in love with it. Thanks a lot !
Jason is in his sexy badboy era
5:41 That spongebob reference... I love this channel.
A good day just became great. Thank you
Here before Jason fixes the title
What you really want is a Mamiya Six V. It's a 6x4.5 capable folder from the 50's that won't break the bank like the modern variant.
My favorite photo channel
These videos got me through the pandemic, and continue to be a source of laugh therapy. 😅
1. That shot at 11:15 is the winner imo
2. great job pulling off that hat. I'm jealous
About the hat, for a second I thought he was cosplaying a CZcams photographer. But I guess he lacks the rings, wrist bracelets and tattoos to complete the costume.
Love that the video is in square format. :)
It's not square tho. I'mma be a smartass
I am glad you had a frist impression of this camera.
Jason, I have a Rolleiflex T, and wouldn’t be surprised at all if it turns out to be your favorite camera a year from now. Get a Maxwell Hi-Lux bright screen and a CLA from Paul Ebel in Wisconsin and you’re set for a long time. The Tessar lens on the T is very charming.
You may find that Xenotar and Planer lenses are preferred for sharpness over the Tessar lens
Liking the absolute committed refusal to use ground glass on medium format by using a prism
I'm inspired to give my TLR another try. Those shots were great. Thanks Luxuriously Richard
Nice one, keen to see more work with this camera
I’m super glad you shot color! Taking out color from a scene, even a desaturated scene, takes away from it imo. Even pale desaturated colors look amazing to me.
baby wake up, grainydays uploaded a new video!
Being waiting your video!!!
The joke about Mint++ had me in stitches. 😂
Gotta say I reeeeally like the brown filter on these shots. It’s a neat effect without warming the stock too much like scanning with an orange filter.
Nice work mate. 🐟
Great video - great images
Had no idea there was a wide angle adapter option for TLRs! Now I wish I still had my Rolleicord.
This color grading 👌🏼
Nice video. I have a Rolleiflex-T and a 3F. Both have removable focusing screens. I also wanted the Rolleiflex 90 prism finder but ran into the same issue that you did. Due to the rather thin housing material, they dent really easy. I then also looked at the adapter plate where I can attach one of my Hassy prisms, but that involves modifying the bottom of the Hassy prism (or at least removing the metal plate). I didn't want to do that either. I was patient and finally found a clean and undented Rolleiflex 90 prism on eBay (with leather case) for a little less than $150. Of course it works perfectly.
I love this frist impression video
My father just gave me his Rollei. Pretty seminal moment. Think it dates 1950s. shutter is getting a bit stuck. luckily getting it serviced here in Germany should be easy. xx
Cool. Coincidentally I just picked up the T. Scored a Rolleinar 1 and 2 with it allowing closer focusing.
Haven’t taken it for a spin yet. A s-l-o-w spin. That is the point for me. Going slow and focusing just on the image composition. Not thinking about the last photo or the next. Looking at the image looking down, upside down and sideways helps achieve that focus.
Oh. This would be about the first big high quality video about this camera. I personally shoot one of those and this 70 to 80 year old lady shoots better fotos than anything other in my arsenal.
Correction: frist
You speak my language... minty++ Also I like the way you modified that TLR; I can see the amount of research that went into this. That Rolleiflex T just went up in price. I could do without the brown filter, but eh, " I like brown and I can do whatever I want" totally justifies. Best from Austria
Another banger.
finally a Rolleiflex being tortured by Jason...
shoot at waist-level in full 6x6 !!
As a 3.5E owner I have to say how phenomenal these cameras perform, when they're well serviced.
The Planar and Xenar lenses are sharp as hell...
I also love to use my Rolleinar Kit for some simple macros...
"how phenomenal these cameras perform" - Yes, but not with a soft Yashica Coke-Bottle in front of it...
Love the great colour rendering of this environment you acheived, suggest putting a chunk of bluetak in your kit, kind regards from NZ.
I like your series of videos that touch on our tendency to buy a new camera or lens instead of doing new or different work. I wondered if you might consider discussing in future videos some strategies for reinvigorating interest in, pressing on through, or in other ways finishing existing projects? New projects can be just as shiny and exciting and distracting as new gear.
Superb colors.
Looking forward to another motorbike video
"Jason is in his sexy bad boy era" Cause that fish was goat behaviour
12:12 is one of my favourite shots from you. Looks like a painting.
When you see the Ebay prices go up, you know there is a new GD episode out.
Damn, didn't expect a formula one reference but glad to see it.
living rent free in jason's mind after my profile pic comment a few weeks ago. love to see it
Jason finally tries a TLR… what a time ❤
Didnt realise my rollei could use an adpater, My serial number is only a few hundred away from yours, but mine has been beat up. Love ur content. x
Ok as a Rollei T owner I might be partial here, but I do think that is one of the best serie of pictures from your videos! I think there is softness with the Tessar lens for out of focus element but in focus is generaly razor sharp. The Caleb portrait seems front focus to me.
Never new about the 645 Rolleiflex TLR, interesting to hear about.
11:20 can confirm, people always stop to talk to me about my Rolleicord.
You can get, and I have on, a mask ser 6x4.5 and a 6x3 for Hasselblad. Love it...GRINS
That bay area looked really nice. What you should have done is walked right up to the edge of the water, taken hold of your brown filter, and thrown it as far as you can out to sea. Far enough they nobody else might find it and try to use it.
photos were fire.
It’s only a matter of time until you try out the Hasselblad SWC. Wide-angle lens, no mirror, and (once you’re ready) square format
What’s that brown filter man!! Love the tones. Great work ❤
Loved the 50mm shots, we are open to change Jason it’s okay.
Yashica did something similar with the yashica 635 tlr
It shot medium format 6x6 images but had a mask and adapter to shoot 35mm in the camera !! A cool piece as well
There is such a 35mm adapter by Rollei for some of their TLRs as well.
jason is in his sexy bad boy era
Frist was my favourite impressionist ❤
The Rolleicord Vb has a kit that allows multiple formats as well! I think it also can do 35mm but I am not entirely confident in that since I sold mine last year. (I deeply regret it)
Yknow at first i was down with the whole use every aspect ratio possible but uploading this in 645 and then shrinking the image down to be framed better effectively making the image take up not even 15% of my phone screen on 720p makes me think its not the most resolution friendly idea which was the entire point of switching to a medium format travel camera
If you're going to shoot your Rollei sideways then you might consider a short shutter cable and pinch the body of the camera between your thumb and first two fingers. But you really knew that and were just making the rest of the Rollei shooting world have to work for it, didn't you. -a random mike
I love those Rolleiflex T''s. I have one and have used it for years. It is a very solid performer. I also have a 500 CM with the metered prism like yours. I had no idea you could use them together like that. I would really like to get one of these adapters. Where did you get yours? could you please respond with the info. As for the wide and telephoto lenses for Yashica, I also have a Yashica 124G with those two lenses as a kit. However, if you get the Rolleiflex wide and telephoto, for some reason they attach better, even though both Rollei and Yashica are Bay I. I think it has to do with the manufacturing tolerances.
Nice video, one of the better once in the recent times.
My Rolleicord Vb also came with the masking kit so you can get 16 shots if you want.
I know it's only a Cord and not a Flex, but I think it takes great photos!
Also, dammit Jason, just shoot 6x6! Try it with some IMAX film!
Hmm, which bayonet does the Rolleiflex T use? The Yashica converters are for bayonet 1, and do work without problems on the Yashica Mat models they were made for (if you ignore the loss in image quality, which makes the teleconverter more or less useless). I found one source stating that, yes, the Rolleiflex T also uses bayonet 1. But if I compare my Rolleicord III with my Yashica Mat-124 G, the Rollei bayonet is a bit flimsy and thinner in material thickness than the Yashica bayonet. And my Yashica wideangle and telephoto converters don't quite fit to the Rolleicord (the wideangle does, even though a bit tight), so I would not recommend to use them on Rollei cameras! (It is not about the weight, but slightly different dimensions; Rollei accessories do fit better on Yashica cameras than vice versa.)
And regarding parallax: There's parallax compensation for 6x6 (slightly shifting the upper and lower borders beneath the focusing screen) on nearly all Rollei TLRs, even on the Rolleicord III. But since you used the 6x4.5 mask, you lose this feature. So don't complain … ;-)
He finally gave in to 6x6!
great frist impression.
i need friends like you guys
You sneaky bastard, I thought we're finally gonna see you shooting 6x6!
Jason is in his sexy bad boy era
Fish time.
The Seagull TLRs (and their folding cameras) have the ability to shoot both 645 and square format as well, if anyone is curious about using TLRs but dislikes 6x6.
What is the brown filter you’re using? I’d appreciate it. Inspiring work. Thanks for this video…
The Rolleiflex T should have parallax correction if im not wrong so even at close focus you shouldnt be having any problems. Maybe with those Yashica adapters. Also the Tessars are amazing for portraits, like to the point that some people who have Rolleis with Planars and Xenotars get a T just for the softness. The prism takes away the cool TLR feature of being able to shoot through a filter while not focussing through it as well, thats why Rolleis dont have through the lens metering. You wouldve probably had a better time just metering shots with your phone.
The shot wide open at 13:02 is clearly front focussed - that's not due to the soft character of the lens. If you look at the full view, the ground & rocks below in the frame are sharper. So either user error, mechanical focus defect or maybe the Hassy viewfinder + adapter and the Rolleiflex are not working as good as he thought. Or indeed the wide angle adapter.
@@caleidoo He did almost everything to make his shooting experience with this cam complicated so yeah youre probably right.
@@caleidoo Yes I think too that this portrait is clearly out of focus.
@@caleidoo 100%. I have a Rolleiflex T and it takes waaay sharper photos. Even the stopped down shots looked a bit off to me... But since the bayonet mount straight up ripped out of the front standard, I'm guessing this camera will either be left to gather dust on a shelf or be brought into service anyways. Hopefully the latter.
@@leonhardbokowski81 So either he spends 1 second on a photo to check sharpness and never looked elsewhere in the frame - which I find hard to believe, you don't need to be a photography veteran to be able to easily distinguish out of focus areas versus lens softness - or he knew his focus was off, but still blamed the lens. There is something fishy going on here.
Vibes!
