    With all of the talk The Last of Us Part 2's controversial story choices and general narrative, I figured it was about time to talk about a subject that everyone has been asking for: the similarities between The Last of Us Part 2 and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. I know this comparison has already been made thousands, if not millions of times, so I appreciate you bearing with me as I talk about it. So, this is a look at Hope, Humanity, and the Post-Apocalypse through the lens of The Last of Us series and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
    In all seriousness, these are two properties I have spent a lot of time thinking about, and it has been interesting to see a lot of similarities pop up between The Last of Us Part II and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts despite the two being very, very different stories. With Kipo's final season on the horizon, this as a good of time as any to look at how it and other mediums explore hope, humanity, and the post-apocalypse. Anyway, thanks for your time, and enjoy.

    First off, if you want access to some extra content (a podcast and a monthly highlight reel of Gaming For A Non-Gamer) while simultaneously support the channel big time, check out my patreon: www.patreon.com/razbuten
    Anyway, with all the talk around TLOU2, I wanted to put something out that viewed it through a different lens than "it good" or "it bad", and I also wanted to shine some light onto Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts because it is a really great show that I don't think has gotten enough attention yet. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed this one.
    As for future projects, I have a bunch of stuff in the works and no idea when it will all come out lol. Gaming For A Non-Gamer has been on a bit of a break because my wife has been wildly busy with her actual job, BUT I recently bought a VR headset, and that will be the focus of the next episode for that series. It may be a bit until that actually comes out, but it is on the horizon. As always, I appreciate you all and the support you've given me and the channel. It means a lot, like, I just hit 400k subs, wtf what is even happening...like WHAT? Anyway, peace!

    One of my favorite part of a lot of fallout games is how many people in the wasteland just *don't care* about their state of living. They make communities, they play country music on the radio and have casinos and tourist attractions. You can tell how the wanderers have made the old world their own. Sure, there's still dangerous gangs and monsters wandering around but people in the wasteland have grown used to it and decide to carry on, holding onto the humanity they have left and making the most of it.

      I always liked that about fallout. Another thing they do very well is actually addressing the desire for the past and how it can strangle the life in the present. It is present in all of fallout: new Vegas and its DLCS but it is not given a name until the third DLC, the same as its title; "Old world blues". It represents a idea that a person can be so consumed with the past, of trying to make things go back too the way they were, regardless of if its even possible or not, that instead they would forsake the present and the potential future they could shape, all in the chance of having some of the supposed past glories. The game world shows us how destructive and fruitless this mind set is time and time again and not just that, but that people can not only survive, but thrive in a strange new future; and I like that fact. Its a small detail, but a important one

    • @spethmanjones2997
      @spethmanjones2997 Před 4 lety +32

      I think that shows how much they _do care_ about their state of living. They have every excuse to degenerate into cynical gangs who prey on the weak or to give up in the face of the horrors of the wasteland, but despite this, they hold on to the things worth treasuring and remembering because it maintains their humanity.

      That's a good point. I never thought of that.
      I'd like to think it would be a mixture of all of this. People trying to build something better, people trying to get to the past and people not caring and just running wild or living life as is in the remnants of the world lol.
      I like that contrast. Thanks for bringing that up.
      Now I want to give fallout 4 a go again. I got distracted and didn't play through more than a quarter of that game lol. I'm trying to finish last of us part 2 now but man I hope there is at least some light at the end of the tunnel.

      You are right, but I think the reason is that, sure its realistic, but its just not what people wanted from the sequel. Its not real life, its fiction... they could have written anything, and the thing they wrote was just not what a lot of people wanted.
      Personally I wanted to play a game about those two characters I fell in love with, and I didn't get that and was dissapointed. The development of Ellie had already happened when we rejoin her so it just didn't feel right.
      By the time we learn why, its with only a few minutes of cutscenes fairly late in the game.

      @shinkinshin001119 Před 4 lety +28

      My problem with TLOU2 is how both predictable and boring story it was. The first game introduced something heartwrenching immediately and you could see how broken Joel was and how Ellie was his redemption. In the second game, almost everything story-wise just went in a completely wrong direction.
      The build-up for the ending was noticeably predictable, it was obvious once they told a typical revenge story, all the clichés would show up.
      Pulled the pregnant card 3 times, you know the dog you killed? Here it is again, don't you feel bad?
      Oh wait, now show Abby's backstory and how it led up to this moment. Not by sprinkling in details about her during Ellie's journey, no, make the players play her for hours. Who's Jessie? I don't remember, he got shot, that means he's erased from the story.
      The whole game slowly became something that focused on a drawn out message about revenge being bad and trying to make you feel bad rather than focusing on the characters, with the exception of Lev and Yara.
      Another point, I feel like most people KNEW Ellie wouldn't kill Abby. It was just that predictable. If you want to tell a revenge story with Ellie noticably changing, oh I don't know, make Ellie the villain by her killing Abby, and make an example through Ellie to the audience why revenge is bad?

I love that despite all of the hopelessness over the course of the narrative, she is able to find her humanity once again, despite everything that she had lost by that point. Many people say this is a story about revenge, but really it's about forgiveness and empathy and *hope.* By the final moments of her journey, Ellie makes a choice to abandon the relentless and futile quest she had been on and forgive the person that wronged her, just like she forgave Joel.

Turning the mutation into actual beings with agency is a great spin on it and I'm happy to see creators exploring more themes of humanity and compassion in their works.

  • @The_Court_Poet
    @The_Court_Poet Před 4 lety +3

    Hope is vital to being human. When you lose hope, you become less a person and more of an animal. Instincts overriding emotions as we lose sight of what made us, us!
    I like the story of Pandora’a jar. She released everything into the world, demons, monsters, plagues etc. and the only thing she managed to preserve in the jar was hope. As the story progresses, humans begin to die and are slain by the innumerable enemies in the world until eventually Pandora is forced to release hope into the world. And with that power of hope, they rise to the top. They have power to push beyond what makes them biologically human and what makes us truly “Human” by the definition of today’s world. I think it’s those of us who lose hope who lose our compassion for humanity. We see this in the example of The girl from TLOU2. (I can’t remember her name lol) she treats everyone as less than human in order to ignore the crippling loss she would have to face if she were to recognise all the things she has done.
    I’ll draw on another example here. Noxamillion the watchmaker. He was one of the greatest animated villains of all time (Imo) and he did absolutely horrible things. He killed millions of people in an attempt to undo his mistakes. In an attempt to bring back his dead family. He hoped, for the past. And he became lost in it. He was willing to do anything because if he succeeded, none of the evil would matter and if he failed, well.....He didn’t care for a world without the family he loved and lost. His humanity was tied to his family and he lost it a long time ago. So when at last he finally failed, all that weight of the sins he had committed finally set in and he weeped for the wrongs he had committed as his humanity was returned to him.
    In conclusion, I think hopeful=Human. Never lose hope. In the darkest times of our lives, we can persevere if we just hope that things will change. And one day, it will, and all that hoping will pay off.
    Never lose hope

      we are f*cked. I mean humanity as a species will likely survive, but live as we know it might not be possible anymore in the more or less near future. I mean corona will likely stick with us for quite some time due to new mutations (it wont kill us but it might weaken us and cause fokus to shift away from more important problems not to say corona isnt a important problem); climate change will f*ck us due to the ice at the north and south pole melting, desert slowly spreading, extreme weather conditions becoming more common and stuff like that and polititions either do nothing, do the wrong thing or do the wrong thing and thinking they are doing the right thing (and convincing a lot of people); nuclear wepons still exist so there is a chance for a nuclear war in which case the radiation and the nuclear winter that follows the war will f*ck up most of the ones unfortunate enough to not die in the explosions and there is possibly even more stuff that I just forgot while writing this so yeah there is a chance we will survive as species and continue living like we do today, but there is also a good chance everything will go to hell in the near future. Anyway one thing is certain live will find a way to keep existing.

    Unrelated but this video sparked a memory. A book I read a while ago, I stopped right befote the halfway point. I was so in love with where everything and everyone was, that I didn't want it to change. So, for me, it didn't. I never finished the book. I crystallized something I loved because I wasn't willing to see it go. There's this quote from doctor who, "Oh I always rip out the last page of a book. Then it doesn't have to end. I hate endings." It hits right at the center of this very specific terror of the pain of loss. Both a developed reaction from previous trauma and an irrational attempt to forever escape into The Good Times™️. I wrote this merely because I felt inspired to, but Razbuten if by some wild chance you read this comment on a months-old video: I would quite enjoy hearing your take on attachment to escapism (or whatever one wants to call it). Your storytelling and insight is beautiful.

      Kipo is still relatively new, given it's content I imagine it will have quite it's own following as it reaches new people in it's "lifespan" and, when those teens watching it now reach adulthood, it will likely be as talked about. That's my hope anyway!

    Damn I just love your videos. I'm a big fan of The Last of Us and the world around it, so when I watched Kipo a few months before the second game came out, I was immediately drawn to this world. Of course it's hard to say that a kids show and a 18+ game have simalerietes but you did such an amazing job doing it. This is definitely one of my favourite videos on CZcams, thank you.

    A very deep game once taught me that "hope makes us strong it is why we are here it is was we fight with when all else is lost"

    I've always been fascinated with stories like these. If I were to write a story, it would be post-apocalyptic.
