Happy Friday! I've received a lot of questions about intuitive eating and weight loss so I wanted to share a video answering this question. Technically, Intuitive eating is not a weight-loss tool, however, intentional eating is! Watch the video for all of my thoughts and then please share yours down in the comments below!

I found a eat more when I'm on a diet because I'm always trying to find things that fit the program and I end up eating too much. By the way I grew up in an Italian family and I never had a weight problem and ate macaroni and meatballs twice-a-week

I like the term intentional. I have been spending more time planning and prepping meals so I can fuel and nurture myself. It's been about a month for me and I find it a great help. When the right food is ready and easily available, it's easier to make good choices.

Very excited to be here!! I discovered your channel only 3 days ago. I was on the cusp of making changes without "dieting" for almost 2 years now.. but even in the no diet culture there is still so much information out there to take in which can be overwhelming. Your channel really resignates with me. I'm so grateful! I've already begun to make some healthy changes.❤️

This was a helpful distinction. IE helped me to quit dieting and obsessing about my body. I gained some weight, quit binge eating, and gradually lost interest in what my body looked like. I started enjoying my life, focusing on family, hobbies, other interests. I stopped weighing myself, saying mean things about my body and lack of willpower. It's been awesome.
But now I'm wanting to take care of this body better. Not to change it's shape or weight. It will do and be whatever it's designed to, and I've made peace with the changes that middle age brings. But I also want to be able to keep up with my someday grandkids and be able to hike with my husband for the next 20 years, Lord willing. I never ever want to go back to dieting or caring about what my weight is, yet I want to stay active and trim enough to keep up with my active hubby and family. This is the distinction I needed.

Well said🙌 Thank you for putting in the time to make this video! What works for me is to alternate during the year. I am intentional most months but am intuitive from August to January (but still aware). It seems to help with the obsession with thoughts of food, calories, and macros. I have lost alot of weight with this approach.

thank you Dani, for this very useful information, I have never thought about it this way and it makes much sense, situational eating is a habit you eat it because you can relate it to the activity you are doing. I want to work on my intuitive eating, and also be kinder to myself, after 40 years of on again off again diets and always struggling with my weight, I finally understood diets are not the solution, the solution is to be mindful and kind to oneself. My new journey is that to be nice to me and to stop the perfectionism that I feel I have to keep to have the body I want, thank you so much

Thank you for taking on a topic which can be confusing to digest! (No pun intended!) I will have to listen to your wonderful video again and then decide what to do for myself. I have been on WW (Weight Watchers) for over 10 years and have lost 100 #s which is great because I was at a point in my life where I mentally thought I could never lose any weight! I am a bit stuck now.... I know I can lose weight but I don't want to do all the work to do it because I know how exhausting it is for me to work at being positive and energetic and preparing healthy meals and exercising enough. Also I just love food! I love to eat! Food is my friend.... I have no man in my life and my family is grown.... my life can be very lonely and eating sometimes keeps me company honestly. I am hoping to get past all of this and feel energized to move forward in my journey and lose the other 50#s I need to lose! And from there the other 40 or so more.... but at times I am unmotivated to do it! The convenience foods and most foods are so fast and easy and many times taste better than what is available! It's a struggle what can I say? In addition I have other health concerns that are serious like hypothyroid and worse. It's hard. I am nice to myself.... I try and talk nicely to myself and encourage and positively reward myself.... because me is all I have most days! Your videos and recopies have helped me so much and I thank you for your kindness in making this one! Wow I rambled on and so sorry for that... but this weight thing is complicated! God Bless you and your little family and all of your viewers!

I have weight loss surgery 13 months ago & boy it's hard work to change the way I think about food. I have been struggling with my approach to eating for a long time. I really agree with the intuitive principles, but find that I need structure with my eating approach otherwise my weight just keeps going up. I am a 65 year old woman who is overweight, but not obese. I have been a member of WW for years and even though I appreciate WW’s support and focus on whole foods and healthy habits, I no longer like the tracking of points and diet mentality that goes with it. I like the idea of intentional eating for weight loss and can’t wait to see more ideas of this nature on your channel. Thank you so much for your great ideas and recipes.

I just started trying to only eat when I'm hungry it's not going that well. In full disclosure I fasted for 4 days and yesterday was my first day to eat and I was going to try to start eating when I was hungry but I wasn't sure when I was hungry sometimes it seemed like I was hungry but the feeling was there for only a few short moments and it would go away so I decided to wait so I'm not really sure as weird as it sounds when I'm hungry. Most of my life I always ate because it was breakfast lunch or dinner or because something tasted good but rarely because I'm hungry I need to learn when I'm hungry

I guess what I'm getting is eating only when you're truly hungry not out emotions (intuitive), what you're eating to assuage that true hunger (intentional). For me the intuitive part is the hardest and where I have to put my most effort. When you use food to feed an emotional hunger you tend to forget what a true physical hunger feels like.

But you can still do IE while wanting to lose weight, right? If you don't restrict anything? I mean, I get it, I hate diet culture, or a lot of it anyway, that says to cut out certain food groups altogether and just eat whole foods. I do have one food that I cut out a long time ago but that was my choice because I didn't like the way I looked and I feel and look a lot better now, but otherwise I don't believe in cutting out any other "junk" foods unless you genuinely want to and not because diet culture tells you to. I get that IE doesn't focus on weight and HAES, but at the end of the day, being super morbidly obese isn't exactly healthy, exactly the same way being skinny isn't (necessarily) healthy either. In my personal opinion, it's not right to promote obesity and claim it as healthy. I don't believe intuitive eating works for everyone. I really like most of the strategies of it, but I believe still that it doesn't work for everyone. I think everyone has to do what works for them.

What you're saying doesn't work for everyone tho, because meal planning and using your logic to decide what foods to eat (being intentional) is not satisfactory for some of us. For example, one food that has all the criteria you mentioned (I like its taste, it's nutricious etc) is chicken. But that doesn't mean I can plan to eat chicken tomorrow because I don't know what my body will want tomorrow. This structure doesn't work for me personally. It's too rigif and doesn't leave space for listening to my body. I preffer intuitive eating because it lets me be more free and actually LISTEN to what my body craves, moment after moment. My body craves different foods every single day, and planning what I'll eat beforehand usually leaves me eating something I don't want at that particular moment (even tho I usually like it).

Observe routine exercise. When you feel you ate more than the right portion just exercise a little bit more. You’ll never be over weight.

Sorry, I think this has been determined to create disordered thinking. Weight loss really comes from what you put in your mouth and it is hard to outrun (or out exercise) overeating. One doesn’t want to get in the habit of overeating and then over exercising. That would not be kind to ourselves either.

So not true.....You can't out exercise a poor diet because it takes a calorie deficit to lose weight.
