  • It seems like everyone can wheelie & manual but you! All you hear is "You just need to practice", but the front wheel wants to stay on the ground no matter how hard you try. Rich Payne is here to help, he's made a condensed list that you can watch before each ride. He points out the most common mistakes when trying to wheelie / manual and how to fix them.

    Learning to manual takes hours. The only people that really master it (being able to manual for as long as they want) spent countless hours practicing on cycle paths and fireroads.
    What helps for me is to specifically do ‘progression sessions’. In stead of riding a nice route or smashing out bikepark laps I just practice manuals, bunnyhops, transfers etc cetera. The goal is to do/learn something new every time, or during the winter months at least maintain my current skills. Doing this made for a pretty steep learning curve , which at 38 years is pretty neat.

    Tire pressure also lower the pressure in the bback wheel to create a flat patch when you bring the bike up. It helps with balance

    A sad truth all these manual videos never mention: you will have a disadvantage trying to learn to do a manual if you're a shorter person on a 29er. After researching this I discovered there are certain geometry facts, especially reach and chainstay length, that work against shorter riders. Chainstay cannot scale down short enough with 29 inch wheels. Consequently, getting your center of gravity back with enough torque to raise your front wheel to the balance point takes more athleticism than it does for taller riders who have more leverage. Taller riders (Rich!) should mention this fact in their "6 reasons" videos. It would be good to see a manual video focused on geometry changes shorter riders can make to stem and bars to help themselves learn. Also "true" mullet bikes, designed with chainstay for 27.5 tires (as opposed to just putting a 27.5 tire on a bike sized for 29), should help.

    If you do a manual but start pedalling half-way through, is that called a meelie or a wanual?

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  Před měsícem +2

      Probably a wanual would be the correct term! Although pedalling while popping a manual would be crazy hard! 😂

  • @blakekennard7700
    @blakekennard7700 Před měsícem

    I like practicing wheelies in 1st or 2nd gear and just creep on the rear wheel to focus in on balance. It’s also really fun pivoting forward and backwards and using the rear brake to keep it up in the air and keep a super slow speed. Also trying to workout turning on the back wheel during wheelies. Manuals on the other hand definitely need more speed to get and keep balance for some reason, still working on control with mannys.

    I'd add "too big bike/wheels" to the list.
    Of course you're not gonna change your bike just to do manuals while on trail but I live in two cities and just got a 27 inch wheel bike in addition to other bike with 29 inch I have in my apartment. A lot easier to ride in tight spaces, jump and of course get that front wheel up despite the fact that the smaller one is 2kg heavier (yes, cheaper too). I'm considering buying 24 inch hardtail just for basic street trial fun in the city, it's awesome.

    • @stanmustard7292
      @stanmustard7292 Před měsícem

      Unless you're riding a hardtail, I would suggest that you try flats. I did after 40+ years and it made me a better rider. It's not that hard to make the adjustment, and it makes it a lot easier to work on progression. You can always switch them out for different trails, I still sometimes use clipless if I'm not in the rock tech.

    1 of the biggest thing to keep wheelies and manuals going once you get them up is to look where you are going, not at the front wheel. Seems obvious but is really hard to do when starting out with these

    @matthewgillman5198 Před měsícem

    you can wheelie in almost any gear dude. i can pop a wheely in 1-9 or 1-10 and go 35km/h down a good straight. its all on the weight transfer to get that wheel up. good luck when you hit a small bump tho lmfao. really low gears are great for getting down low speed and coaster wheelies. helped me get my back hops down because you find that point and really get familiar with it

  • @sorinmetea578
