The Grinch is a Christmas classic in all of it's iterations. From the original to the Carrey to the newest 2018 version, the Grinch has found his way into our holiday traditions. In a previous theory I talked about the problems with his heart growing three sizes. Today, I'm here to figure out if the Grinch was RIGHT to be angry at the Whos. You see, I think there was a reason we all missed - a medical reason. Get your earmuffs ready, Theorists, we're about to get LOUD!

There actually is another disorder similar to misophonia but for visual triggers. I don't know too much about and I don't remember what it's called, but I saw it on a site that talked about misophonia so I might recommend doing some of your own research. It does happen to me, for instance, one of my misophonia triggers is chewing, so now I can't even see people chewing without having that kind of a reaction.

OMG my family needs to hear this. SO BAD. Just the misophonia part. The "just get used to it" mentioned hits so at home. That's what they told me. They always called me overdramatic for covering my ears. Eventually I got into the habit of eating as fast as possible and "using the bathroom" where I just ran downstairs as soon as I was done and stayed there until it was all over. They were worried about the bathroom thing, never considering the fact that I couldn't just "get over" the sounds of a certain person eating. They didn't even put two and two together when I would remain at the table if that person wasn't there...

When I heard her explanation of what Misophonia felt like. I started questioning if I had it, my sister's singing has always bothered me. Not because it was bad or anything, it just. Happened. I felt like covering my ears or going on my phone to stop her from singing, but whenever she started it felt annoying up to the point where I started crying because she wouldn't stop.

I haven’t been officially diagnosed with misophobia but I hate the sound of chewing too and my sister chews with her mouth open. I always yell at her for it because it bothers me so much and she just does it more. I really hate it when people do that just to be funny or annoying because it makes me feel physically anxious and upset. I can’t really eat around people and even hearing myself chew is uncomfortable. Even the quieter chewing noises in the video made me feel uncomfortable. I didn’t really know that there was a name for that until a couple years ago and it explained so much lol. I felt the same way as Stephanie described thinking it was just teenage angst or just being annoyed with my sister or family so thank you for talking about this.

I hope that it get's better for you and that you can find good ways to cope! I totally relate to having yourself also trigger you, I hope you sister can learn to be more empathetic, but you might want to try and explain it better to her. Often people in my life just don't understand what I mean and they do better once I've explained it. After hearing Steph talk about her experiences, I’m convinced I have misophonia as well. I had EXTREMELY similar reactions whenever I’d hear my grandfather eat. He was so loud and there was one day where he ate soup and the slurping noises were so intensely distressing to me I literally went to the bathroom to cry for 20 min. I couldn’t even finish my food that night. Over the years I have been able to *kind of* tune out other peoples eating sounds but not usually for very long, especially if they’re in close enough proximity to me. It’s a relief to know I wasn’t crazy for how I feel about these sounds and have been able to find a partner who does his best to avoid those noises when we eat together.

The only issue with Misophonia is that because we know so little, and it’s self diagnosis, many people misdiagnose themselves. No one likes the sound of chewing. These aren’t just minor annoyances. As someone who has a pretty bad case of misophonia it’s kinda frustrating. I had friend once who wouldn’t stop making one of my trigger sounds. I had asked him to stop, he didn’t. I wasn’t aware of misophonia at the time, but as Steph describes it, I got exponentially angerier. I couldn’t leave the situation. So I tried to stop the noise. I pinned him to the ground. I got in trouble of course and luckily we’re still friends and we are both aware of my misophonia. The entire ordeal took about 15 seconds.

I cannot guarantee this would be the case for all people with Misophonia, but my belief is that people who went through sevear trauma then get super sensitive around noises and anything else that reminds them of that awful situation. The inability to escape that noise then triggers all the feelings of anxiery and anger - because what we do with our lives is generally to try to escape anything that is similar to what has happend. It is possible that something happend when you were so young you have no memory of it, but your nervous system remembers all to well and panicks when it hears a sound that seems like it might happen again.

Yes! I know this is going to be about misophonia! Like Stephanie, I also have the issue with others eating. I felt just like she did. Thankfully, growing up, we were a family who ate while watching TV, or if we were at the table, Dad would usually put music on. but it was those rare cases when they didn't that it just made me really anxious hearing them chew and I started eating in my room. My parents chew with their mouths closed, but are still loud eaters, and it's less the wet tongue noises and more crunching that really bothers me.
Misophonia is fascinating I think, but please don't crunch near me! Lol

This video actually helped me and a few memories of my family out 😅
While none of us have an issue with chewing, I realized that Stephanie's description of the sounds was similar to my reaction to any type of buzzing noises.
I also remembered how my younger sibling becomes extremely irritated when they hear kids playing outside or dogs barking in the distance, In such a way that sounds similar to mesophonia. I was talking about it with my mom, and she told me that she had a similar issue when it came to voices on the radio. so it turns out that multiple people in my family likely have mesophonia. Thanks for giving us a term to describe it!

I don't know if it's something like misophonia but for most of my life, I have always had a particular sensitivity to hearing things like dish scraping and silverware jangling compared to everyone else I've seen. Any time I hear any of it, it causes an almost pain-like reaction from me but for everyone else, they seem to be perfectly fine. For some people, for dish scraping in particular, they don't even process that it's happening despite the clear discomfort it brings me. It got to a point where they got me a plate that was harder to scrape against because I was so sensitive to it. Again, I don't know if it's anything like misophonia, it sounds like it produces more of an emotional response than what I get, but hearing about that made me think of it.

For me it was a soft noise like a whisper that would make me feel uncomfortable and angry, and sudden loud noises like flushing a loud toilet would trigger me for a few seconds. It’s hard to describe it, but a person with this has certain triggers that causes people to feel this way, and we don’t get to choose what those triggers are. The poor guy has chronic migraines? No wonder Christmas makes him grumpy! All day listening to my students playing with the jingle bells on my Christmas sweater made me want to scream by 3:30 when they left, and *I* still wasn't allowed to leave for another fifteen minutes, with delivering the last of the gifts across the whole school, which (you guessed it) made the jingle bells go off for 15 minutes straight, right up close to my ears! If that's enough to make me go batty, and that was a seven-hour shift, imagine being the Grinch, who has to go through that kind of grating noise, like nails on a chalkboard, for 30 solid days without a single moment's peace until December 26! I don't think I would just steal Christmas. I think I'd go the Jim Carrey route and blow up their town Christmas tree in desperation for some blessed peace and quiet!

Stephanie describing misophonia is exactly how I feel when I hear an insect. That awful whining and buzzing sound has kept me awake/woken me up at night, caused me to literally run away in a panic if I'm out walking, cover my ears, etc. and it's not the fear of the insect itself - I don't care if there's a mosquito in my room, but as soon as I can hear it, I freak out. Even hearing someone else imitate it can make me anxious. So thank you - I think I learned something new about myself!

I did pop one of my eardrums which made it even more sensitive to that sound..I’ve always thought it was my imagination, but whenever my friends or family starts eating ice or anything crunchy and cold I get so annoyed and uncomfortable it makes me wanna scream at them but I try to hold my temper. I have a friend who loves eating ice cubes, she often comes around me and eats them while talking to her, it makes me super uncomfortable and annoyed. I try to tell her that I don’t like the sound of her eating ice. My ears are not that sensitive but ever since I popped my eardrum. But I’m glad that I’m not the only one.
