To be fair, the abuela didn't make the house. The house just created itself after the candle became enchanted. She doesn't have that kind of power

@@J1ntu yes! Mirabel and Abuela are leaders, who hold the family together. But Abuela is a bit obsessed with control, so she doesn't see it at first and is hardest on Mirabel. Also, their leadership styles are very different, and that leads to clashing as well. Very fantastical setting, but the family dynamics are so real.

Also in a lot of places, extended family and grandparents live together in one house. Particularly in a lot of countries where qaulity of life is more expensive. The whole children going off to live on their own independently is a relatively recent western thing.

I think it's for all the latin people lol, I'm a mexican and my grandma still lives with us, i also have some aunts and cousins living here too lol
And yes, grandma is always in charge, you say no to her and she will definitely be annoyed (at least in my situation :v) even my dad has to follow her orders even if he just wants to lay down and drink his coffee , he's almost 40 so it looks kind of silly, but it's his mom after all
And though it's frustrating and tiring at times, she's my abuelita and my only one ^^
Sorry for making my comment long! I have to make sure that i make sense haha! And i hope i did?

What you said about this song, about everyone being so different by the end, is one of my favorite parts. Because Mirabel says constantly in this song "now you know the family Madrigal", yet all we've learned are their names and powers and the image of them that the town/she has. It's so fun to find out that really we don't know them at all!

Yes, yes, yes, pleeeeeeeeease watch the film! There's a bop like every 10 minutes (you haven't even gotten to We Don't Talk About Bruno yet and it's the catchiest damn thing!), and the messages are so powerful. In all your videos about Encanto you say that the movie talks about real, deeper stuff and that's true. There's big, hard, painful reality and also the human ways we connect around it and build loveliness. Plus there's tons of stuff about Colombian culture. A thing I love about it is that it's not about white folks and white folks' stories. Latinx folks, Caribbean folks, South American folks, brown folks, black folks...they all get to be the center of this wicked relatable story of family. SO GOOOOOOOOOD

Casita (the house) was built when the miracle happened, Abuela actually as far as I can tell doesn't have magic powers either, she from what I can tell is the keeper of the magic, in that she looks after the candle, runs the family and household and so on and so forth.

Naw, those kids were shocked and surprised when they found out she didn't have a gift. They did NOT know until Dolores spilled the tea. Abuela did NOT build the house, the MIracle did. As for Dolores... she sees her own gift as more trouble than it's worth. So she probably outed Mirabel because she didn't see it as that important.

Madrigal is also a musical term. The other song you listened to "We don't talk about Bruno" is a really good example of what a madrigal is. It's when multiple people sing different lyrics as counterpoints. Another common example is that scene of the choir singing in Harry Potter. It's used a LOT in Columbia. The songs in this movie were written by Lin Manuel (who did Hamilton) and he wanted to highlight as many different msuical styles from Columbia as possible.

Fun fact about Luisa (the strong sister). The director (or producer, I get the roles mixed up) had to fight with Disney to have Luisa have her buff and strong physique. Disney pushed to have Luisa have a more traditionally feminine physique, and I honestly think having Luisa as she is now was the right call.

I think you are having a bit of a culture clash.
In Colombia (and other cultures), many generations living in one house is not just a thing, it is a great honor. It shows honor to the elder, the elder is honored by having her family around her.
It isn't selfish - it's just a bit unfamiliar to you. Whereas you would find great comfort in moving out into your own home, they find great comfort and honor being together, supporting each other, being there to love one another.
It's also Colombia in the 1950s. LOTS of cultural differences that Americans from 2022 might not understand might mess with their (and apparently, your) heads.
No worries. Sit back, enjoy. And finish watching the movie!

  • @Pluveus

I don't know if you had the second song get copyright struck, but I'm happy to find your channel, the algorithm is feeding me Encanto reactions, but since you asked in your review of Surface Pressure, a bit of context. This is the latest Disney animated feature, and Disney has been putting Lin-Manuel Miranda in charge of the music for the last few musicals they've done. That's why the songs are well grounded in their setting musically but also have that Hip-Hop DNA. Miranda seems to be writing the music with the same design philosophy that Howard Ashman laid out for the Disney Renaissance in the 90s with the added benefit that Miranda probably won't die of complications from AIDS 2 movies in.
One really cool thing is that the vamp at the beginning of the songs directly correlate to how long it takes for the characters to build emotions. This song has a 40 second vamp, because it's right at the beginning of the movie so the scene is starting very low emotion that builds as she's explaining stuff to the kids and asking the house to start the percussion. Most of the vamps are about the same as Surface Pressure because that's about the standard build, but "What Else Can I Do" has Isabella singing immediately because it's at the end of a very emotional scene for her and is a complete 180 of how she thinks whereas Mirabel is speak-singing right up until the line "I'm sick of pretty I want something true."
