Are You Living an Insta Lie? Social Media Vs. Reality

- If you're guilty of living an Insta Lie or know somebody that is, then this video is most certainly for you. We're partnering up with boohoo.com to call out some of the funniest and most common Insta Lie's posted on social media.
Insta Lie (verb): an intentionally false representation of real-life on social media. Examples include:
1.) Tagging an edited and made-up selfie with #IWokeUpLikeThis;
2.) Taking a million selfies before deciding on just one to post as #Effortless đ;
3.) Going all the way to Starbucks, buying a coffee and opening up your Macbook - taking a photo of your #WorkSpace, closing your Macbook and then going back home;
4.) Using filters to edit your travel photos - making them literally look #Unreal.

The reason why I donât like Snapchat because when you take off the filter youâll get disappointed at you face
My husband and I went out for breakfast and we noticed that everyone around us were on their phones. Father with his young son, mom & dad and teen son, young couple with their toddler who was on a tablet. I felt so sad for the kids. What a perfect opportunity for families to talk and connect. We didn't give our son a cell phone until he entered high school. We don't allow phones at meal times or when we're out at restaurants. It's just gotten so out of hand. It's no longer for convenience, it's an obsession, an addiction.
How did you get your son to not be bitter about not giving him cell phones until high school and all the rules? If i ever have a kid I want to do the same thing, but Ive seen my relatives' kids be unbelievable spiteful against their parents because of this.
Not letting your kid use the phone at the table is an error. You don't need to put rules, you need to make him appreciate the time spent connecting.
I never had any rules about phones, and still every time I sit at the table with my family or friends I am the only one wanting to talk face to face, socialice and stop using the phones.
What you are doing to your son is useless.
@@mochi8632, THAT is your problem. "Never had rules." When dinner is served in my house cellphones are not allowed at the table. Do so and YOU and your PHONE may be going out the door. You will get only one warning.
@@donotneed2250 Why tho? Also, you don't have any power over me so you can't tell me what to do.
But if you do this to a kid without even an explanation then you are abusing them. You are making them fear you, they will not value any time spent with you because you are creating an abusive relationship.

@@alisa7012they need to create an own space
@thx473 whilst I get the point you're trying to make, I unfortunately don't think using the word 'connections' will make any difference or make people become 'aware'. Facebook already uses the term 'friends', and we all know how most people don't even speak to the 'friends' that are connected to their account. For this reason, I think the word 'followers' captures the reality of what people are doing, when they connect to a person's social media account, quite accurately.

Frighteningly accurate.
Be honest. Be real. If something you think of posting isn't genuine, then don't post it.
Lauren Vanessa Vegan Good point but what's your definition of genuine
honestly, when i spend time with my friends everyone is barely on their phone, and at least the people i know irl don't fake their life like that on social media, so maybe the people you know are like that or, maybe, just maybe me and my friends are a bunch of freaks
lamar wahb my definition of genuine is exactly what it's defined as. "What something is said to be." like, think of the girl in this video who posted the pic of her kissing her boyfriend. she posted it when she was angry at him and seeming to have second thoughts about loving him. she should have waited to post it until she felt sure (in my opinion). im all about being real. like, i post a lot of food pics on my instagram, and if a recipe turns out worse than i thought, i will either not post the pic or i will post it with my honest thoughts about how it could have been better. i actually did that with a post about vegan sushi. i shared my failed attempt then a few days later i shared my successful attempt. So being genuine it being honest by giving your real opinion and thoughts, or by not posting at all.
Zairo Delgadillo it sounds like you and your friends are doing things right. paying attention to each other and creating quality memories. :)

Iâm a young and beautiful 23 year old woman and I donât have social media. I never had it and never will have it. I just hope that more people start doing the same and start focusing on living and learning cool skills. People have to stop to try to impress others and just focus on impressing themselves. Iâm so proud of myself for never following the crowds and not checking whatâs trendy. đ€
Julietta
Great.
Now people put this on other social media and do the same thingđđđ
People on social media feel the need to post every aspect of their lives. Instead of enjoying the moment they would rather take a picture of it and show everyone else that they're 'enjoying' it. I was once like this
Norin Begum
So true. I went for a walk without my phone yesterday and I had to constantly fight the urge to take pictures... not that I could.

tbh the only social media i âpostâ on is snapchat and i only send pictures like black background with the hour or sometimes some text lol. i donât like posting my life on social media, and the only reason i do it on snapchat is because of the snapstreaks i started long ago
Me 2. Finally I found the right way, N I deleted Ig
I'm on social media but I barely use it to post pics, i use it for communication, like i found the instagrams of people I knew a long time ago and I'd lost their phone number
I Go to Lot of Partys bc my Boyfriend is a DJ and Most of the time i enjoy the time with the other people on the parties or Dancing Don't Using my Phone but i Take Like 3-5 Pictures and Vids.I Like to Share my memories but i just want to feel it too,Like tf Being always on the Phone when other Friends are around you? how unrespectful
Talk about a depressing reality, Who remembers chilling with a group of friends who werenât looking at their phone screen every 3 mins? (Sigh) 2007 Good ol days
Bro stop stereo typing us.. we use social media yeah but where not obsessed and look on it 24/7
14 Rings You sure? Donât be to blind and look around.
I was born in 2007 đđ but I get your point
Idk most people i know arent on their phones 24/7.
@@Joy-bc3cs what are you doing here kid?
This is so sad but very true! This is how I was for a long time before I ditched all social media and started being me! Being real and Iâve never been happier.
That social gathering scene really hit me.. I felt that..
This is why I do not have social media anymore. I want to be authentic to myself and also it causes me a great deal of anxiety and depression.
Same! I feel so free now!
Me too
Me tooo
I still have them but itâs as if I donât because I havenât been on them in months lol
So true. I know some people can function fine with social media but I am definitely not one of those people. I tried so hard to stop comparing myself to others and seeking validation in likes/comments/messages/retweets/etc. but I'd fail every time. Life without social media is pretty isolating and you quickly realize who your real friends are and who you want to always stay in touch with.
Someone once said being famous on Instagram is the same as being rich in monopoly ...... made so much sense
But my friends used to make fun of me because I had way lesser followers than them
@@lazzy5173 They do not care. Everyone is minding own problems. So sister... You don't need to worry.

@@lazzy5173 exactly, read mans comment again and draw the comparison, the friends making fun of you are rich in monopoly money but meaningless in the rest of the world
But in instagram they get real money, don't they?
@@lunasea5197 sure you get but it's not enough to buy you bread and butter
I met my friend for a short hike in the local forest preserve, we are old ladies in our 60s. I was excited for this three hour outing, to catch up, connect and talk. But... the moment we said good morning to each other, my friend pulled out her phone and started taking pictures of everything and anything, including ourselves. The connection did not happen, the conversation went shallow, I lost my friend being totally preoccupied with that photo session, that she later that day posted on FB.
I feel you. I can spend an hour with my sister and learn more about her day by checking out her FB including the amazing time we had at the bbq when actually it was dull and I couldnât wait to get home. Sad because Iâd love to connect but they have to want to as well.
I know a kid a few years younger than me who only just started high school and whenever he sees me he asks if I have a phone or a TV yet. He wonders how I live without them. I wish he could see how full my life is - but I think he's too busy using TikTok and Instagram to notice.
The only things people donât post on social media is their failures and when theyâre peeing or pooping
Lol some will post themselves on the toiletđđ just nasty â
They do now on tiktok đ€Šđ»ââïž
whaddya mean?
Yeah I have seen on the toilet pics. No one posts a messy wipe though đđ.
And why the fck they would do that?
It's actually really sad...Thankfully I gave up my instagram account a couple of years ago and never looked back. Life has been so much more enjoyable!
Fernanda Good for you! It really does feel freeing!
Welcome to the club
Fernanda I still have my instagram account, but I don't spend too much time on it.The real struggle is when all your friends are screen addicted and they can't stay five minutes without thei r mobiles! And whatever they do they must post it,that's so hateful
I've been off social media for a few years now. I can honestly say when you get off social media and start getting out there and actually enjoying the REAL world, your life won't change one little bit
over half of millennials portray their relationship as happier on social media than it really is, social media is full of people's carefully curated lives but it's usually not a realistic representation of everything that's going on.
For the last girl, with the boyfriend? I feel like social media posts like that are a huge reason why people are surprised when they break up; from the outside it all seems perfect :(
true you really don't know what goes behind the scenes
Yes I was that girl.. looks so good but in reality just fights.. and ppl on u like why did u break up with so and so.. you guys were so cute together ?!?!?
Yes it is. Because our lives are so filtered from the truth
Because no oneâs life is that interesting. Filters and background work great too.
What people fail to understand is being a slave to social media. Get out of the house and enjoy life. The more likes you get the more addicted you'll to false recognition. The only person who needs to understand your worth is YOU.
abrarjunejo yup
Many of them are out of the house when they use social media, lol
abrajunejo The irony is that I know my daughter "likes" the posts of people she feels sorry for - so the amount of likes definitely does NOT reflect on how popular you ....it is false recognition.
abrarjunejo amen
abrarjunejo I need help. My sister is supposed to be studying because she going to university, and all her focus is on is social media. Also putting makeup up, checking out her stories on ig/Snapchat and it's annoying! She is never gonna go to university and I keep telling her too, she never listens.
As far as I know, people usually use filters then they want to hyperbolize their experience of life. It's sad, because not always everyone can take out of life that they want. This is a reason for imitate that your life in social network in a way better than in reality
I got into photography in 1975 and have never had the urge to constantly take pictures of myself. Actually, I quickly came to not like taking pictures of people. They always want to look anyway BUT normal. When overseas I'd walk around with my camera positioned so people couldn't tell I was taking pictures just so they wouldn't ham it up.
It's kind of funny to look at pictures taken years ago, people were actually awkward when the camera caught them. Almost bashful. Makes you wonder what it will be like in another 50 years.
I'm on the edge of quitting social media. The fakeness we portray and see from others on daily basis is driving us crazy. I do even catch myself doing it occasionally I'm not sure if it's really a gap within us that we're trying to fill or in my case it was kinda a rivarly type of thing.
I think because social media is like something we own. Like our personal space. Like there are no rules but our own. We can control it on the way we want it. When we want and where we want it. Anything that we cannot achieve instantly or express from a normal non social media relationship/life, we can put or say in social media. Social media is instant gratification that it can be addicting. And while being addicted, what's true and what is make believe can be mixed. That's when we can go to extremes bcos it's is gratifying. I want to explain my opinion more but i just have little hard time elaborating it. I dont use my FB anymore. Twitter is useless to me. I visit my instagram once in a while. You Tube is what i enjoy. Hehe..
Quit it best thing i ever did!
I have never entered, I only use WhatsApp and Messenger just to chat with my friends.
PREACH
you should definitely do it if you just want to live your life. i left all social medias because everyone only cares about what others think and its so depressing.
People actually do this?!
Yeah, I've no idea!
no. people in short films about social media do this
I had a friend who did this smh
Yes they do
insecure people do.
Never signed up on Insta and never will. Social networks are poison.
That's why I stay away from Instagram as much as possible and whenever I'm online I don't even see my friend's stories or posts, I only see memes and tips for anything (food, cleaning, etc) relevant for living the real life. If I ever start posting everything about my day and worrying about the perfect picture I take a break and ask myself why. Generally it's because I've been looking at perfect lives and wanna show mine as well. It's really like in the video lol I've been away from instagram more and more and every time I get back there I realise I was better away from it
I deactivated my instagram and my facebook a week ago, you realize how addicted you were to these social networks when you don't use them and you feel abstinence, like a drug.
Me too! I'm one month off of instagram and I couldn't believe the amount of times I automatically unlocked my phone and went searching for the app icon that first week...

Just please enjoy the life. Unfollow that toxicity. I hate being stable in social medias, drained so much, especially when hanging out with friends while what they did just locked into their screens or doing actions for photos to show off on social medias. Took the photos for your memories, not for showing off, took them when u were feeling that feelings, not pretending to be the one. Express your feelings in private, not public.
What annoys me the most is when I see couples or friends at a restaurant on their phones and not talking to eachother! It just drives me mad! Or worst, I was at a MacDonald's recently where they had put iPads for kids to play whilst eating!! Just TALK!!!
Ilona Winn ohmygod true đđ
They probably are talking, the internet is one of the best methods of communication invented.

Ilona Winn , yes it annoys me also!!! Couple went out with each other but are busy with their phones!! Another thing is clicking photos after photos of the food and uploading!!! It's like I'm eating the food only to show off!! *So irritating these things are!!* đ„đ„đ„
I hate thar Ipads so much... Kids this days... but its not their fault
I deleted my Instagram and refused to make a Snapchat account. I just can't stand how people are faking their lives and proving that they are always "busy". I just can't stand people who are unfollowing people who they used to follow just to show popularity. I just can't stand how the number of likes define a person of who she/he is. Because if people are truly happy and busy in life, they wouldn't have time to prove to others that they're happy. Personally, when I started limiting my use of social media, I have learned to live in the real world. I have learned to cherish my true friends. I have learned to make genuine memories not to brag to others, but to treasure for myself.
A failure is not a loss. It's a gain.
I totally agree with you đ
A failure is not a loss. It's a gain. Bro it's not that serious.... all I do on snapchat is post pictures of my rabbit.....
thank you....make genuine memories not fake ones to show people how much fun you are having which ain't the case
