  • Are you living the life that you post?
A Social Life is a short film about a career driven woman named Meredith who's living the life she's always dreamed of... online. Meredith strives to live a balanced life: staying fit, working hard and connecting with her friends; she is creating her "image" within her broader social media friend base. But she awakes one day and realizes that her reflection is merely the collection of photos that she has shared with others. Is this her life? Or just a carefully curated brand?
Kerith Lemon is a writer, director and creator with rich experience in multi-platform storytelling and creative narratives. Driven by her passion for stories that emotionally connect, Lemon is drawn to narratives that elevate women, mirror societal complications, and create dialogues amongst a broad audience. Her directorial debut, A Social Life, premiered at the Canberra International Short Film Festival, where it was awarded the prize for Best International Actor and most recently has won Best Ladies First Short at the Lady Filmmakers Festival in Pacific Grove, CA. It will continue to screen at film festivals throughout 2016.

The sad truth about social media is that people want to decorate their instagram stories and their page rather than their lives. They want to make their "social media life " exciting rather than their actual real life.

I deleted social media last year of December 2019 when I felt my anxiety rising again. It was taking a toll on my relationship and on my anxiety. Every post I saw made me overthink my relationship, who I am as a person. After not using it for awhile, has made me happier. So trust me, when you delete social media, it makes life easier on yourself & you tend to forget that there was such thing as “comparing yourself to others” & “competition”

We are not fallen angels nor demons, we do not re -cycle back.
Do not take advice of "how to get better" from humans - we all fail to give advice and to be an example. Christ did it all - that no human ever could. HE made a way for us to be redeemed and set an example. Only hear GOD, never another human.

The human nature of narcissism and competition. Narcissism because we post things on looks, activities, even things that are supposed to be personal. Competition because social media is literally a “who can be better than who” game, if you lose the game you commit suicide out of sadness.

I only had Facebook account and that was only to follow Quran and hadith channels and specially Sheikh Assim Al Hakeem but then I noticed how easy it was to cross the line of haram interactions with other gender. So many sisters would send message, even married ones and I got tired of ignoring the messages and felt guilty so Al hamdulillah I deactivated my Facebook as well. I will permanently delete it once I move to the country I wanna settle in cause I will need Facebook to send my friends my Whatsapp to stay in contact. Even had to leave a very close friend from Denmark but we still talk because we play an online game on weekends together xD. I am really so much happy and satisfied with my life Al hamdulillah after deleting the only social media I had. Social media makes prohibited things so much easier. Brothers and sisters are looking for a spouse over Facebook or Instagram just cause that person posts Quran and Hadith they think that person is a good human being without even knowing who that person is.

This is true. For most people it's hard to live the life you actually want, so you just take a nice picture and try to be satisfied with that. Instagram is a good place for sharing the highlight of your days but inevitably it tends to become a competition for validation and the lack of it could make you feel less valuable as a person. She tried to pose for her friends/family via social media, maybe to regain a sense of self-worth and normalcy, in the end she knew she was only lying to herself and creating an unhealthy obsession, it wasn't enough to take pictures of her life anymore, instead she wanted to actually live it. It's hard, but not impossible.

I used to post alot on social media until i faced a health issue. Since then, i realized that wasting my time trying to decorate my Instagram or Facebook account was pretty stupid especially when you realize there are some haters around. I deleted my social media accounts and focused on my physical health. Yes physical health not just mental health. I felt like social media made me an open book to others and alot of people would be nosey with what I'm doing or what i did. I'm a very social person too so it made it even worse. Being private is the best. My parents got worried when i deleted my social media and how i changed. Alot of my friends ask me why i have disappeared or why i have changed so much especially the disappearing from social media thing. I just say oh i got bored of social media and don't always have access to wifi. No one knows what i do or what I'm doing and i swear since then alot of things have gotten better.

Hell, I'm actually way more social because of them. If I didn't have Facebook, I would never talk to anyone I used to know. I'm an introvert and depressed, so I never want to go out or talk to friends on a whim. So, when they plan stuff, I see ahead of time, and can decide to actually go if I wanted to. Or, I can chat with them, without actually having to talk. Hell, I met up with a friend I only ever saw when she shopped at the place I worked. We had ice cream and talked about gaming. I 100% would not have done that without being able to message her on Facebook, because phones are so much more personal. So, for at least this introvert/recluse, I get to communicate without the interaction I'm uncomfortable with. Once I get out there, I feel more into it.

While I don’t need to worry about unrealistic expectations or negativity and comparing myself and while I’m incredibly happy and content without, it was really difficult to stay as connected when I was younger. All my friends would message and talk over Instagram and message on snapchat. I remember wanting to join at one point purely to be more connected but I couldn’t because it felt like I was too far behind and my silly anxieties about it stopped me. The food, the sneakers, the nights out...it really resonates, how everyone tries so hard to make their account - their life - look amazing and vibrant, when in reality you can't really tell one average Instagram account from another. It's all fitness, brightly colored health foods, work, pets and parties. It's like virtual carbon copies, and the sad truth is - as portrayed in this film - most of it is done to portray a certain kind of lifestyle. Those little hearts are the new drug.

Actually, there is a competition in every social media platform on whose photos are happier than others! It's simply crazy to be addicted to this trap! There are lot of productive things which can bring tremendous results in our lives instead of posting status and pics 24/7 & checking people's reaction to it. With all the social medias nowadays, no one is really sharing deep moments with their dear ones. Even if they are sitting together in one room, everyone is always busy with their phones. Social medias are a good thing as long as we know how to use them, as long as we don't get too attached to them in a way that they control our personal lives. We must also remember that in years before, there were not all those medias, but that did not stop people to communicate. Instead, people were so close because they went personally towards each other to create friendships and relationships and those relationships were strong because they were based, not on technologies, but on feelings coming from the heart.

Drives me scatty ....bloody woman needed a support group for ex pats to survive in America WTF......she is housewife living the life holidays in Hawaii, DISNEY etc, always out with this group. Every party, holiday, visit, dinner out etc is posted I've slapped her on comments a few times so she knows it gets up people's noses. During the time she was posting all this I nearly died in ICU, lost my house etc etc. You end up just wanting to smack these people in the face lol. No not jealousy talking disgust at the sadness of needing to do this for likes and validation.

Does anybody else notice how similar this is to an alcohol addiction? (or any drug) where she puts up a front of being great, yet pulls away from the real world and spends more and more time consuming her addiction, to the point of staying up all night to get her fix, and waking up on the couch with a "hangover" and reaching for more hair of the dog?
I love this short film. For all its layers and truths.
If someone can sell you something, addictive and consumable, they will. The internet has the same affect as any addictive substance on our brains.
The more we learn about this, the more we can defend ourselves from the dark side and predatory nature of business on the internet consumer.
I love the message of hope, self awareness, and healing that it sends at the end.

This was a very interesting video to watch. It's crazy to see that some people actually live their lives like this, posing as someone they're not to look good for other online. It's not healthy to always be thinking about what other people think of you and that you have to lie about what you're doing to look better in the public eye. Just be yourself!

Sounds a bit selfish but yeah. You don’t need all those group chats, talk to your friends on text message or actually see them in person rather than “snap chatting” them or facebooking etc. Honestly life is so much better without social media. You realise who are your friends and who are your “social media friends” big difference.

Social media isn't bad if you use it to search things that relate to you, like Pinterest for me, what I ve seen there is so beautiful and amazing, opened my soul. In case you use social media just to compete on who's life is better will just get you sadder little by little.. this is a cycle that continues through every feeling of needing to prove you are not antisocial. You are so important and so much more than you can imagine, you have everything that you ever needed and more than you could think of, just do the things that please you from your soul, not from your fear and then you will find happiness.

This is not how we are meant to be, we are meant to be free, living, social beings. We socialize with people that we care about. Social Media has been a way of tracking everything..." I must post a picture so that I can get likes from people that don't even care if I'm alive or dead." no, how about you have a coffee with your friend, talk, don't take a picture of your food/drink/friend, the whole world doesn't have to know about it. You dont need people's approval of "okay she has a social life"... What is the point? You see posts of people having" fun" and you feel obliged to post something as well. It is depression, social media is a pest. It's completely alright to spend most of your time at home, you don't have to post everyday about how much fun your life is. Just ask yourself, what is the point? I'm so glad I have no social media. #free

What really happened to that old Facebook where we never really bothered about how we looked in pictures or didn't have the urge to update every minute of our lives. What happened to Orkut where we used to post scraps and wish friends happy birthday :'( AI killed us.

  • @davit1652

Social Life or as I like to say “Ivory Towers” that we like to trap our real identities in has become a tool for us to shape an image or a brand out of us and try to sell it to the audience for the sake of being praised of what we are doing or just to show off others how perfect we and our daily routines can be. The award-winning short film “Social Life” perfectly mirrored the idea of this cycle by proving that in this media-driven generation where we all are tied to social networks, where moments instead of being enjoyed are being captured and turned into pictures by us are not for loading them in our memories but for the larger, virtual audience. The protagonist of the story initially seems to be happy with the life she created on social media showing others that while working hard she is yet disciplined and can keep a balance by working out or cooking after a nine-to-five rate race. However, at some point, she realizes that her life was just a carefully created brand. Therefore, I believe that in the end, we all have to remember that we are humans and ask ourselves how can we be perfect if we do not let ourselves be imperfect at a particular period of our lives.

She was living for her image or depiction of what she believed the outside world wanted to see. Valued likes as the only form of currency towards her net worth as a human being. Became overly discontent for not being genuine with her life. Overall lost the strength to continue on with her facade and having no actual interaction. Don't be so caught up on just your outward appearance. Your mental and emotional health are just as important

If i add my two cents.
This was the most gripping short film i ever seen.
Because the topic is about how life is today, "life". Its so contemporary.
It was such a haunting film when you see the character indoors, what gave me chills started when she was eating alone and the likes start piling up. She is so popular, yet nobody is there to company her.
And then the putting on the make up, and the "date night" jesus. That was spooky! She looked like a princess about to hit downtown and she ends up drinking herself to sleep.
Ill share this one. This was great!
