Why Is Everyone Using Inverted Full Backs?

- Famously, full backs were always one of the least important positions in football and professionals were often converted wingers or centre backs. But in the modern era, the full back has become one of the most important positions on the pitch. In recent years, all of the very best teams have had a world class pair of full backs. From Luis Enrique’s treble winning Barcelona team who used Dani Alves and Jordi Alba. To Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who’ve played at the very top thanks to flying full backs: Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold. And you can’t forget about Real Madrid’s triple Champions League winners who had Dani Carvajal and Marcelo. However, full backs have evolved even further to the point where inverted full backs are starting to become a lot more common in the modern game, but why? In this video, Statman Dave takes a look at why everyone is using inverted full backs…

Because now more-so than ever, playing from the back has become more important, its why having 3 CBs has become popular, since having a numerical advantage helps in the transition of the ball from GK to front if your team lacks quality CB’s with impeccable ball playing
You want 3-2-5 or 2-3-5 attacking shape, but don't want your defenders to have to run the length of the pitch in defensive transitions, giving wide opposition attackers more time and space.
Started loving football tactics after watching dave videos😀
❤
I'm a Man United fan, but I cant help but mention the City Lad Rico Lewis.
Hes gonna be a whole new unearthed Gem in the inverted full back position.
it's just modern tactical innovation and adjustments over time
1. overlapping full-backs have been the norm for so long that they start getting figured out = wide areas started getting congested
2. so these managers start inverting them to allow for central overloads as a reaction to those defensive tactics
3. at some point in the future (4-8 years or whatever), the inverted full-back role will start being used lesser and lesser
4. cycle repeats in some form
Peps already changing with his use of 4cb thereby giving the attacking players more freedom and protection
4. Well that's life. Cyclical.
I'm in love with tactics especially the evolution of full backs. It's so interesting.
I love your videos Dave
Keep going mate
🙏
Great analysis as always
Thank you Statman Dave
Thanks very informative
Pep already changing the Meta by bringing back a libero.
Things you love to see
Super appreciate this breakdown. I hear these terms all the time but don't actually know what they mean for as much as I watch football
The MM system suggested at the end would be so fun to watch!
Football is so incredibly complicated now
Pep is a genius but I would like to see him coach a "sleeping giant" type of teams with limited budget. No hate, I just want to see what he can do. Something like what ten hag is doing to united
Isn't that Barcelona 2009 ?
@@ACTHEGOAT not really, Barca had Ronaldinho deco Henry etc. Anyone they want they can buy. But yes props to him he was brave to believe in Messi Xavi Iniesta and dispose of superstars
Limited budget? Ten Hag? He’s spent £220m man 😂
@@matthewwatson5133 spent that much because the club took the entire transfer window to go and get him players would be no where near that if we spent at the start of the window
😂😂 manchester united has limited budget???
I really like your analysis bro big up
Cheers bro
Amazing ❤
Hiya Dave can u do a video on how Pochettino will set chelsea up and potential signings please
M still waiting for a mourinhos Roma or unai emerys villa tactics video
Guardiola didn’t introduce the inverted fullback role in man city! It was in bayern first.
If you’re an inverted full back, you have to be pretty much flawless on the ball. Any turn over caused by them leaves the team vulnerable if your CB’s are not the quickest. But I really enjoy watching players like Zinny, Rico Lewis and Trent you can tell they mastered their trade as a MF so playing inverted comes easily.
Stateman Dave just wanted your take on 3 signings for man united: Hojlund, kudus, ugarte ????
Most managers are using inverted full backs simply because of pep
Its that simple
why no analysis on Sevilla vs ManUtd?
Inverted FB is good when the one who does it is as good as Trent!
Pep used Fabian Delph as an inverted RB also.
Inverted LB. That was the beginning of inverted full back in city. I enjoyed watching him then, because he excelled at the role.
Please its the Dutch philosophy it's not new Johan cruyff invented this
Ideally, Arsenal need to play Teirney left back cus he is better defensively than Zinchenko. But, Zinchenko is definitely better at inverting. Thats why Teirney has been benched. He's still a great left back. Its a matter of preference. But Zinchenko will always be a liability defensively unless we come up with a way to play Teirney and Zinchenko. which for me is putting Zinchenko where Xhaka is, he can do everything Xhaka can, and more.
The purpose of playing inverted fullback now is to create a box of 4 midfielders (North-east, North-west, South-west, South-east). So if Zinchenko plays the Xhaka role (North-west), who then plays the Zinchenko role (South-west)? You need a good ball-playing player to play this role with the ability to also pass precisely through midfield, thus Teirney is not ideal to play there and therefore benched.
Harry Maguire as striker 😀
Ole tried to do this at the start of last season (quite unsuccessfully) but at least it shows he or his coaches had an understanding of the evolution of the game and how to improve the team. Why it didn’t work I don’t know, probably a lack of a DM.
Carrick & McKenna's performances with Middlesborough & Ipswich this season show there's big coaching talent there
How is it innovative or a revolutionary if it had been done before? With Herbie Chapman's WM formation or the famous Hungarian side that thrashed England spear headed by none other than Puskas.
Statman Dave is United fan
so?
No shit
its known a long time ago lol
He’s never hidden this lol his analysis is 💯 not biased. He’s fair and just calls out what he sees.
we need a video on how to stop Guardiola's City
Ole tried the 2 striker system, looked like it had potential.
PS: He was underrated tbh.
Ole was thrash, you don't know anything about football tactics
@@Jykobe491 if he was trash why did he take united to a 2nd place finish
@@abdihassan2426 that season was low key a fluke, 21/22 showed how bad he was
@@nonewthing not forget, every top six team struggled in the beginning of that season, even man city. But they bounced back. So did United.
@@Jykobe491 If you have such football knowledege wat are you doing watching this video. Unlike your fifa in real football how player perform also matter.
