What if Formula 1 only awarded points for QUALIFYING?

- Qualifying has always been an intrinsic part of Formula 1. It’s the one time across the race weekend that we get to see the cars at full performance, and it allows the drivers to really test their metal. Despite the fact that countless historic moments in Formula 1 have occurred in qualifying, it has never afforded points or counted towards the Championship. But what if it did? Indeed, what if it did exclusively? In this universe, Sunday does not exist, and we’re going to see how each season would unfold if points were awarded just for qualifying, and finally answer the question once and for all of who really are the best drivers on one lap. So, the rules: I’m going to apply the same points system that each season used, and I will take into account grid penalties for things like dangerous driving or ignoring yellow flags in qualifying and practice, and I will include disqualifications and exclusions from qualifying for technical infringements, but I will not include grid penalties for things such as engine and gearbox changes or bringing the car out of parc fermé, or for incidents in previous races, as for the sake of this timeline, there is no grid to be penalised for and those races never happened. I will also be discounting the sprint qualifying sessions as seen in 2023. With that out of the way, let’s get started and head back to 1950.

Reminder that if you think Leclerc’s luck in Monaco is bad, Jim Clark took 4 pole positions in Monaco without managing to even get on the podium in any occasion
I was JUST thinking about that! And yes, Charles isn’t the most unlucky F1 driver when it comes to the Monaco Grand Prix.
And it wasn't Clark's fault most of the time, Charles has crashed out and it being driver error rather than mechanical but Clark's Lotus broke down so often, it was farcical that he only won as much as he did. Had his Lotus been more durable, he would have way more races. Despite having a driving style so efficient, mechanics can decipher which parts came out of Clark's car because they would look almost brand new, he still had issues with the car falling apart one way or another.
2017: Pole in the feature and leads with ease before a SC and then suspension failure.
Has to start last in the sprint due to the earlier DNF. At this point some small points don’t matter so he sends it and complete some great overtakes until a collision.
2018: Brake failure in the race.
2019: Ferrari fucks up qualifying and he is knocked out in Q1. Does the same strategy as in the F2 sprint and takes massive risks. Some great passes are then followed by a collision.
2021: Takes pole position and crashes at the end of Q3. Normally not a problem but Ferrari fails to check the left side of the car and miss that the driveshaft is faulty. DNS.
2022: Pole position by a mile, worth noting that he was almost 1 second up on the rest before a red flag. Race is run in heavy rain which dries over the course of the race. He starts the first 15 laps by pulling a 10 second gap on the rest of the field and dominates this first stint, then Ferrari messes up horribly.
2023: Qualifies third, unfortunately his engineer messes up with traffic and he gets a grid penalty. Takes home a fifth place I think it was.
The only driver errors here are the F2 sprint and 2019 race, both of which were not exactly genuine mistakes but more a consequence of earlier bad luck leading to him choosing to go for insane overtakes to make something of worth. I’d say that is preferable to sitting back and hoping for a lower points position.
@@allainangcao28tbf most cars back then suffered from reliability. It wasn't rare to see multiple DNF's

From all the changes in that theoretical qualyfing championships timeline, this is the biggest surprise by far for me.
??? It's not exactly a secret that the strategy by Ferrari was geared towards a long first stint by Schumacher. He almost always started on a full(-ish) fuel tank, while Rubens did the opposite.
Boy, it just started but i can already imagine Leclerc in 2022
Well... You're going to be dissapointed...

Hi Peter, as a fan of Formula One and its history, i have an idea for an "what if?" video: what if there was a Rookies' Championship? But first, some rules:
1. Drivers that raced in Championships preceding the first World Championship race (e.g. Farina, Fangio) or in the 500, between 1950-60, shall not be considered.
2. Drivers that participated in at least 8 races in a season for the first time, are eligible for points.
3. Points system (See notes)
3 drivers: 4-2-1 (when all 3 drivers finish in the top 10)
11-15th places: half a point.
Below 16th: no points.
Bonus: fastest lap (in the top 10) and a top 8 on sprint races award a quarter of a point each.
Notes:
*I.* The Championship may not take place if there are less than 3 drivers eligible for points. Points system with 4 eligible drivers: 5-3-2-1, with 5 eligible drivers: 6-4-3-2-1, and so on.
*II.* Points only applies to championship races. Non-championship races will not award points.
*III.* No points awarded if less than 75% of race distance is completed. Bonus points are only awarded for drivers that reached the chequered flag in the top 10.
*IV.* This may be obvious, but this Championship has no effect on IRL standings.
Am open to any changes that may be recommended.
Damn bro the biggest what if is
Peter, blink twice if Charles Leclerc made you make this video!
charles leclerc didn't even win *sobs*
Senna getting that early season FW16 onto pole position at least once in 1994 deserved a World Championship..
Moral of the story: Jean Behra was very good at qualifying
Or very average at racing
And Maurice Trintignant sucked 😂
RUBINHO CAME OUTTA NOWHERE
Just goes to show how great Jim Clark and Ayrton Senna really were. Incredible
I like how 2021 still is contreversial, and Hamilton fans would hate Verstappen even more now as they could now argue that his wing touching in Brazil cost Hamilton his 8th title.
But Verstappen would have qualified in Sochi instead of safeing the engine, where he most likely would have taken pole or at least beaten Hamilton, who made a mistake.
@@unnamedunbekannt1691 Verstappen pole in Russia = +25 points

Of course hunt got 69 points in 1976

@@potatogirlcultist19 that's why i want that
So, in this timeline, Rosberg beat Hamilton twice (in equal machinery), and Leclerc still screwed by Ferrari
Graham Hill - 5-time runner-up (1962, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1968), no title
René Arnoux - 3-time runner-up (1980, 1982, 1983), no title
2 most unlucky drivers in this format, although Arnoux is atleast more succesful in this timeline.
If you look at it closely, Arnoux has lost the title 4 years in a row int the last race, when he really should have taken it
Also Brabham (team) don't get any championship despite being top three 13 times
I was going to comment on how amazing the little differences in the 50s and 60s are, and praise you for the amazing work plus all the gorgeous pictures.
Instead, I will say this should be the canon history not because of Senna or whatever, but because it gives Rubens Barrichello that precious WDC.

Hi Peter, have you considered making your videos available in audio only format on various podcast services, I feel the long form nature of them combined with your clear style of speaking really lends itself to such a thing.
Great video, I really love knowing what it would be like in an alternative world 😊
Huge respect for putting these videos together. So much work must go into them! I spent two hours on figuring out what the 2023 season would have looked like if Red Bull had only fielded one car for Verstappen, so I can only imagine how long this must've taken. No in this timeline it's Fangio!
@@PeterBrookF1 oh my bad, that makes sense. Thanks.
To be fair, only counting the best x results per driver only makes sense when there are races which may be affected by reliability. At least that’s what I think.
I didn't quite understand this from the video - did you count the new Sprint Shootout in 2023 in the results? I think it would make sense as the session is basically a regular quali just with a shorter timer. You could use the points system that's used for the Sprint race in real life (so 8 points for a win etc.).
So, conclusion Fangio dominates all stats again
Man is just the best
In Serbia we have saying "drives like Fangio" when someone is driving fast or good
Note that fangio was older guy, when he set everything, if he started racing like Max, I'm sure he would score 20 titles...
This is for all the #Trullitrain enthusiasts
Before watching I will hypothesize that Leclerc either won or was a close runner up in both 2019 and 2022
Turns out he only got third in 2019
What if points were awarded for qualifying and the race?
How was I not subscribed to you already? Massive oversight on my part. Apologies.
8:18 is pretty sad for Hawthorn to win then retire just from die in a car crash has to just be so awful
In order for reverse grids to work , qualifying is worth more points than a win. This is how we do it on weekender tracks in n America. F1 could do this. Make a win 25 points and pole 35 points. Then do reverse grids.
Behra-Porsche-Porche is the most hilarious team name ever
F1 could at least give 3 points for pole, 2 for P2 and 1 for P3 like they do in Super Formula currently.
Same in DTM
Its very difficult for the refueling era, especially for Schumacher as he almost always started on a much higher fuel load in order to run longer
We need a video about the 1955 season
34:42 soooooo in this case imma go ahead and say senna said something along the lines of “Ight imma head out”
Hey Peter, I have an idea on a video
What if the f1 points system was always like

2.16
3.8
4.4
5.2
6.1
3. 8
I mean it did once afford points in 2021 with the single best qualifying session I think of all time quite honestly in Spa. (I know technically there was a "race" on Sunday but no.)
Then the goat is clear, Ayrton Senna da Silva
Too Bad his wins don't tell the whole story, could've been top 3 all time if not for the Accident.
Technically it's disqualification in the race and exclusion in qualifying
Its interesting that in 2011 Lewis and Jenson had basically inverted quali and race results
Finally, Lewis gets his 2007 title 🔥
You mean 'his' title that he lost because of a driver error in China 🤡
I honestly didn't think there was a way to make Barrichello a champion, but I was clearly wrong. Very surprising!
I hate to be that guy, but our telly wasn't 480p, it was 576i in PAL standard territories
