Disney's TANGLED is one of my favorite modern Disney Classics, but the movie begs answers to Several questions about Rapunzel's luscious locks. Have you ever wondered if hair is actually strong enough to carry the weight of a grown man? Or if Rapunzel could manage the weight of so much hair in the first place? Well after getting tangled up in some research, Loyal Theorists, I have found the answers!

Imagine the relief (on her head) she would feel when her hair got cut. Like 60 pounds that you've dragged for 18 years gone. :o
For real. She would've felt like she was suddenly weightless.
I’d imagine a similar feeling would be in many ahem… “gifted” women if they could get a surgery to “tone down/remove their gift”
I totally agree
😁good for her
Didn't mat make a video about how she'd die from the sudden loss of that weight? Like canonically, great relief but realistically... Death
Omg what would that do to her knees from the weight of all the hair just getting choped off
One wrong thing I could think of. Since the body could get used to the stress after the build-up of her 18 years worth of hair. Would that not mean her body would be very powerful after dragging that hair around for so long. Since humans have adapted to almost everything that has been thrown at us that means we can overcome anything with time. 18 years of 4 inches of hair growth per month with the weight of her hair increasing at a constant rate would mean her body would naturally adapt to the stress on it.
Rapunzel is like us right now. She’s quarantined for most of her life just like us. And the kingdom was called corona lmao

5:15 Her neck is fine regardless of the weight since she’s pulling the hair with her hands not her head, which means most, if not all, of that weight is being transferred to her arms. So the only way her neck would be in danger is if she let go. So as long as she’s able to pull the weight, she’s fine.
I was looking through the comments just to find someone saying this! As someone who grew up with very long and easily tangled hair, pulling on hair becomes a lot less painful when you hold the base of your hair with your hands. The force that would usually be put on your head is transferred to your hands and arms instead, leading to a much less painful experience.
I was about to say that lol
The neck would only really be in danger if she wasn't pulling, as that would pull on the rest of the hair, which then pulls on the head and the neck.
Exactly! So glad someone pointed this out. I’ve noticed this with my own hair.
ikr i was pretty puzzled abt why this was discussed at all
As a person who wanted to have long hair like Rapunzel, whenever i washed my hair, it was REALLY REALLY heavy.
I can tell you, i felt relief when i cut it for the first time, it legit felt like my entire scalp have complete relief from carrying my hair.

I feel like mat forgot the fact her hair hasn't been 56 pounds her whole life. When we see Rapunzel on her journey her hair has grown out to the hefty 70 feet at THAT point. When she was a small girl her hair was a lot shorter (still very long but regardless). My question is, would it be possible for Rapunzel's scalp to build up a tolerance to the weight of her hair over the years because of its steady growth?
yes it is possible since history hs proven tht humns dpt to build resistnce to somthing they struggle with
I've always thaught how tangled her hair would be from pulling a person up
Also that braid those three little girls did was unrealistically short for her hair to be 75 feet im pretty sure her hair would still be draging on the ground a decent amount even braided

I have no arguments on this. I’ve have so many questions about her hair myself. Like how she isn’t even worried about split ends.
Though it is magic hair that can heal you, so maybe that isn’t a thing. Who knows.

3:39 most hair would actually stop growing at a certain length. That length is different for most people. Well, it wouldn’t stop growing, but it has a point where it wouldn’t get longer. Because you’re hair stands (each strand) goes through different phases, where it grows, doesn’t grow, and fall out. All your hair will not grow at the same time either. So because of those phases your hair will hit a growth “plateau” where it doesn’t really get longer. Screaming Icecream lol right? I was expecting a bunch of hate comments defending her
This is the first I've ever heard of this Lele person so I'm afraid I don't really know the whole story and I can't be bothered to look it up. However, hair only grows for about 3-7 years so from what I've seen in this video (which is admittedly very limited) it is entirely possible that she had never cut her hair and it would only be that length.

You made me happy I cut my hair short when I was young but now you have changed how I will look at rapunzle for the rest of my life
5:20 Why would snapping her neck be an issue with the pulley thing? The neck would not be supporting all that weight, the hair outside the window and the hook itself would, right?
I just want to say that in my class a few years ago we talked about medieval times. A bonus question on our quiz was to name a character/story set in medieval times. Afterwards we talked about our answers and my friends did not know that Rapunzel was an old tale. They actually thought that Disney created Rapunzel.
Nick Kunst i hate when people think disney made rapunzel, or the little mermaid, or snow white etc. like dude learn your facts the brothers grimm weren't creative for nothing jesus
river Actually the brothers Grimm didn't create them either. They stole the stories and are only known because of making the stories, well, grim.

Alright, but she sings her healing song on a regular basis, so while the magic goes through her hair to wherever someone is touching it, couldn't her hair also be repairingitself, since the healing magic has to go through there each and every time? Maybe that's also the reason why her hair looks and smells good, because the magic is getting rid of all of the dirt and repairs any damaged hairs?
That actually makes sense, if the healing magic is just kind of healing everything it passes through, like a eugenes hand stuck in the hair etc.
That's what I thought, too. I just wonder why it isn't able to repair itself, once it's been cut? (Although I've seen a trailer for a rapunzel show or something of the sorts, and in that, her full head of hair grew back, all at once) - I wonder if that's because the hair healed itself, thus growing back?
Might be... I've seen the trailer, too. If that's the reason why, then that show may have just confirmed our theory :D
he literally says that this video is about those kinda things actually being possible in our real world without the magic
At the beginning he said what hair could do without magic.
When he said "I wonder what I could do with Up" I was just about ready to throw hands
i was just watching The Who playing Tommy at TANGLEwood before watching this now. Thank you for seeing the similarity of the opener and Pinball Wizard :D
Imagine the relief she felt when she cut it at the end of the movie
Rapunzel: "Holy crap...I have short hair...and no healing powers..."

But her parents are still alive and look like the correct age to be 18 years older when they reunite at the end
Her singing will get useless when she turns 89 *_cries in despacito_*
You know, the hair falling out thing may affect us, but Rapunzel has healing hair. It would automatically heal her scalp. But the cleaning thing you really can't argue with.
Edit- I know that matpat said he would be looking at this without the healing aspect, but in the end, he was talking as if that line (about not acknowledging the healing aspect) at the beginning didn't matter.
Edit 2- someone mentioned that in the song that she sings, it says that the hair doesn't heal, but it turns back time, so the hair would be self cleaning. So my comment is useless.
Wouldnt her mum help her clean it, If you watch the bits where the mum is with her, she's brushing or cleaning it?

ik I'm six months late but this made my day
Ads know what to throw at ya
RedFlare I GOT THE SAME ADD
i know I'm late but wouldn't her hair growing over the 18 years, wouldn't her head have gotten used to the weight of her hair. It would have grown slow enough that her head would have slowly gotten used to the weight of her hair. It's similar to when you lift weights at a gym. Your muscles slowly get used to the weight and soon that amount of weight wouldn't be that big of a deal.
Good point

@@samhueber6829 I did, I said that the neck and spine are not like muscles they cannot get use to weights like muscles can. But im sorry if i sounded rude and shouldn't have said it was a terrible point because it was actually a good idea of yours, so sorry about that.
@@elyc4894 I never saw your comment about the muscles in the head or neck. If I had I never would have said anything to you other then how you have a great point. Thank you for the clarification.
Yeah
This theory gets more complicated when you realize if she didn't have the magic flower shes a typical brown
as a cosmetologist, this episode brought me so much serotonin hearing all the science behind your conclusions
You didn't even need to check whether her neck would break or her hair would be pulled out of her head because in the movie she's always supporting the weight with the strength of her arms, not her head itself. She holds the hair, leaving her head under no stress.
Exactly what I was thinking
She is pulling her hair near the top when there is stress farther down so she doesn't feel it in her scalp. It's what people with long hair do to brush it when it is tangled. No pun intended
yeah that's what i'm saying
I was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else said this already. That's the point of using the pulley!
LuxMashups that would be so untill she gets it braded
MatPat at the beginning you didn't need to do all that math because when people climb up her hair most of the time she's pulling them as well so the weight in between her hands and her hair is just dead weight so there was no force on her head at the time
Alexander Ramirez it's driving me insane. Only the hairs tensile strength matters.
YES SOMEONE SAID IT
exactly. it was infuriating to listen to
I was thinking that too, but MatPat showcased that scene where the guy (haven't watched it, don't know the names) is climbing up at night with the hair on the window sill, where I'm guessing Rapunzel was asleep and therefore unable to provide that helping hand
Stephen Hoy but then I ask why wasnt that calculated. On top of that, what about the times we see her carrying some of her hair does the hair problem still exsist or does it lessen it or does it go away all together?
i love how matpat has made the scene from spider man 2 in his intro I watched it today and went " wait a minute that's the film theory intro!" so yeah well done
She’s pulling with her arms though… not her scalp. So she’d only cause damage if she let go. Theoretically you should calculate how strong the hair would have to be to withstand pulling someone up a tower, along side how strong Repunzel would have to be
I guess her hair’s magic keeps it clean and nullifies the weight. Since when it stops being magic, she cuts it.
FIRST
No, the magic disappeared after Flynn cut her hair. That's what happened. She never cut her hair herself.
Angel Snowflakes and her hair lost its magic after he cut it, it never just lost its magic on its own
Well i guess that makes sence but if you think about it, her hair is only ever using its magical abilities when shes singing so she'll have to be singing 24/7 for her scalp not to fall off. Thus meaning she's carrying 70 pounds or hair whenever she walks around. (Unless she singing)
No she cuts it THEN it looses it's power
There’s literally a waterfall behind her on the screen when you say there’s no water near by...
Yes true but remember she is locked in the tower and can’t get out
She can't use it because if she leaves the tower she turns into a burning rhino
@@marsbars9114 Yeah, but Gothel could leave, se could just grab a bucket go to the waterfall, go back to the tower and bathe her daughter

11:32 okay, so I have actually gone to a space museum and they had these weighted vests that corresponded to a different planet. basically, you put the vest on and that is how you would feel if you walked on planet A. so I tried one on that was 50 pounds and it was pretty heavy but not too bad for my body to hold. as I was taking it off, the velcro on the vest got caught on my hair and I dropped to the ground face first. my family just walked away and as I called to my mom for help, she just stood there and laughed. thankfully a nice lady came to my rescue and got my hair out of the velcro.

(And proves some humans are mean)
Yeah she does walk around all day with 60 pounds pulling on her scalp but her hair does have healing powers that probably starts in scalp so how would she hurt her scalp if she is always healing it???
I'm talking about in the movie not at the end. I'm confused
@taysflower power You mean the lock of hair Gothel cut at the beginning? Why would it affect that one?, the hair is short and close to her scalp so it doesn't drag or pull on anything.
Ur mom gay
HER HAIR HAS HEALING MAGIC! You told us that in another video. Of course her hair isn’t falling out.
On traction alopecia: Except for the fact that Rapunzel heals her hair probably several times a week thanks to healing mother Gothal. I mean honestly anytime she sings her hair heels whatever it’s touching which includes her scalp.
Which would also likely mend any breakage and splits if she has any. Honestly I don’t see why cutting it would have caused it to lose its magic at all. That’s the part that made me mad.
1 episode earlier: Sponsored by Disney XD; Now: Accusing Disney of ripping off songs from others before the 1 minute mark.
Uber Dragon Gah...Disney didn't pay me enough.
Uber Dragon and he wonders why he doesn't get invited to premieres.
Does she have magic eyebrows?
Petro Greeff
😂
Its hair so... YE!
If you look her eyebrows are brown, like her hair at the end of the movie, so I don't think they would be magical.
Me imagining all that hair but in her armpits. *shivers*
Or maybe she is a super saiyan beyond the super saiyan that is even beyond the super saiyan 3. (Her power level is over 9000)
Huh that's cool I learned out why whenever I have my hair up during the day and at night when I take it down there are always loose hairs that come down with it 🤔
facts and sience put aside and adding a bit of disney magic, Rapunzel does have healing hair so it's probably healing her scalp and maybe even the hair self. So she probably wouldn't go bald. Also, I'm really glad that someone pointed out the fact that she's literally brushing dust INTO her hair like wtf?!
MatPats shade towards Lele is... something..
According to MatPat it’s pronounced Lee Lee excuse yoh
And 17 Magazine...that’s shade man

I think the magic healing powers fix all the issues
Xcaliber The Wise yeah, everytime she used it, it probably healed the hair from the damage. So i think as long as she uses her healing hair a couple times a year or every month or so, she'd be fine
she did remember that her healing hair is always active and that mother gothel uses it about once a week to stay young
Xcaliber The Wise To true
Yeah
Xcaliber the wise same
Hey I found something else
When Luisa sings: “Was Hercules ever like y’all y’all want to “
She says “Hercules”!
She grips her hair so that nothing is pulling directly on her scalp. If you look, the hair around her head is still loose, while the hair on the other side of her grip is taught. That's also why she uses the hook, because it helps release some of that tension. *Maybe* in the scene at the end where Eugene climbs up without the hook wouyhe be pulling directly on her scalp because she was tied up. But in every other scene she's grabbing her hair to prevent it from pulling on her scalp.
Did you ever think that the since her hair is magic, that when she sings the hair heals itself? I mean its glowing healing hair! Maybe when she sings, the hair glows and heals itself. It starts killing itself, but then when she sings it heals itself. That's my theory based on his theory.
Cassidy Chatten The point was if you don't consider the magical properties how her hair would work in real life. Cause as soon as you throw magic in ANYWHERE anything is pretty much possible. Then wheres the fun in theories?
That might be part of the reason she has to do it so often. Not just to heal bitch whats-her-face.
Well, for all we know Magic could just be really advanced science that is too advanced for primitive apes as ourselves to understand. But what do I know?
Cassidy Chatten that's what I was thinking
Cassidy Chatten 200th like!!
