    10:28 I personally think Anna and Elsa aren't part of The Disney Princess Franchise because Frozen evolved into its own franchise.
    For curiosity's sake, I googled to see if there was a reason Esmeralda wasn't a Disney Princess and found the most interesting thing on Disney Princess Wiki. Turns out, she was a Disney Princess until 2004. They removed her from the franchise for two main reasons: First, her sales were financially disappointing. Second, like you said here, she deals with more mature themes than other Disney Princesses that made it hard to market her to younger kids.

    You completely forgot about princess “kida” from the movie Atlantis in THIS video but you did mention her in the second so it’s cool.
    Though honestly, I think a lot of people forget about that movie. Guess it wasn’t popular enough to make the cut.
    To be honest, all this time, I thought qualifying as a Disney princess revolved more around popularity.
    The more fans love a character, the more money they make Disney, and the title of princess is passed on.
    But again there still lies the question of why newer princesses aren’t on that list.
    Also another thing worth mentioning is in the game kingdom hearts,
    They have what they call “princesses of heart” and for some reason “Alice” from Alice in wonderland fell under the princess list even though she isn’t a princess.

    She's just the most notorious killer in the disney lineup.

    • @tankou001
      @tankou001 Před 5 lety +207

      we WILL note that Mulan is clearly NOT a commoner! She's obviously the sole daughter of a RATHER noteworthy noble household; one which has their own land and walled compound with gardens and the like. While it DOESN'T seem like her family has SERVANTS they certainly live better than what would be the common household style at the time. The fact that they have a Horse capable and trained for war is PARTICULARLY telling, as this would have been an EXCESSIVE expenditure both to get AND to stable. She's just VERY obviously a LESSER noble, probably one that has risen through action in war rather than economy. REGARDLESS, the fact that Mulan has an appointment with a matchmaker AT ALL implies heavily that her family is at least well to do enough to arrange such an appointment. The fact that they use silk gowns and the like in this scene is ALSO a big indicator that they aren't simple folk!
      Matchmakers, you see, were for the nobility. The poor didn't care about that kinda shit.

    • @tankou001
      @tankou001 Před 5 lety +70

    • @tankou001
      @tankou001 Před 5 lety +30

      @@qthedisaster1730 this certainly WOULD raise Mulan to heightened nobility and probably grant the rest of her family a social boost, as was common at the time. However, we SHOULD be looking at Mulan at the beginning of her own first movie. One way or the other; having a walled family compound, a horse fit for war, proper armor and good steel, being able and inclined to afford a matchmaker, owning silk dresses for said appointments and her father being a publicly known and reputed figure known by conscription officers for his performance in War already... All this points very clearly to the fact that she's NOT a commoner. The list would prolly go on the longer we look.

    what's funny is the actual reason why the frozen princesses and moana weren't immediately added was because they made way *too much* money on their own. disney waited until it would financially benefit the properties to add them to the disney princess lineup.

  • @pad1239
    @pad1239 Před 2 lety +2

    i know im 3 years late to this but has anyone ever thought about moanas name problem being the reason she's not in the official lineup?
    as you might know... moana is called vaiana in pretty much all of europe because apparently there is a italian adult movie actress called moana something who reached a stage of fame where her sheer existence was too heavy to name a disney movie moana. she or her relatives also seem to hold some copyright stuff tied to the name...
    now if disney added moana to the official princess roster they would have to produce all the stuff twice (website merchandise games whatever ) and thats not even counting the countries that have a different alphabet compared to good ol english...
    i'm guessing it was enough work already to change the movie all the songs and all the promotional stuff for the movie itself.
    its a shame that one of the most modern and independent disney princesses is not represented enough no matter what the actual reason is ...
    done, rant over

    Disney's official criteria:
    1) Human character in an animated Disney movie
    2) Not introduced in a sequel
    3) Born royal, married royal, or completes an act of heroism
    Lastly, box office performance is considered. Notice I said performance and not success. The real reason Anna, Elsa, and Moana are not in the line up is because they do better as their own franchises and Disney would lose financial opportunity on them if they put them with the Disney princess line up. When princess start to lose popularity, they go in the line up to keep them relevant.

    Mulan is not a princess but she is definitely not a commoner. Her father is a famous war hero, she lives in a large house with gardens, and is the only low ranking soldier who owns a horse. Anyone else with a horse is a general or high ranking official. Mulan may not be royalty but she definitely has a privileged background. Considering her father's fame it is likely that he was gifted a lot of land and money for his deeds so she falls into the noble class. It's not a true qualification but considering how poor people were in those times, being a noble practically made you royalty.

    Have you ever done a theory about the movie Brave? I decided to watch it after you mentioned it in this video and it makes no sense lol. I’m not sure what kind of theory you could even do about it (which is probably why you haven’t) but I definitely think you could solve some of the unanswered questions in the movie. Like the fact that the movie had nothing to do with the girl being brave, in fact she cowered just like everyone else whenever she seen a random bear (why is the movie called brave???) or the fact that the words the witch told her to remember seemed kind of useless as Merida didn’t actually remember the whole thing and just focused on one small part of it and convinced herself that she had to fix the blanket she ripped to fix the curse. So, it really wasn’t that important that she remembered those words because she didn’t and the curse was still removed anyways lol.

    Disney actually has a specific set of rules as to what qualifies a female character as an official Disney Princess.
    1. They must have a primary role in an animated Disney (including Pixar) movie
    2. They must be human/become a human
    3. They must be born royal, marry royal, of perform a significant act of heroism
    4. They must not be introduced in a sequel
    The secret hidden rule is box office success which why you don't see characters like Esmeralda, Megara, or Kida on the list since their movies didn't do as well as others. Esmeralda and Tinker Bell actually used to be included in the Disney Princess lineup, but were removed because Disney executives decided that they didn't fit anymore. This is presumably because Tinker Bell was now part of the Disney Fairies franchise, and Hunchback was probably eventually considered too serious of a movie to be marketed at children, hence Esmeralda's removal.

      There's also the second part of the "be successful" rule, which is "don't be _too_ successful." If you're too profitable as a separate property, as _Frozen_ is, you're not going to be added into the official Disney Princesses line.

Frozen merch is still doing crazy good and would eat their own market if they release a frozen brand doll and a disney princess brand doll. Moana has this issue too their merch sells off very well people still want them but making 2 different brands of merch of the same thing wouldn't work for their market.

      Speaking from a scholarly perspective, Mulan didn't gain any titles just because the emperor bowed to her. It was an honor, yes, but she didn't get a title and therefore doesn't outrank any imperial progeny. The children of emperors aren't automatically named a prince or princess, they get those titles gifted to them. King titles are a little different. Being named King of Wei doesn't mean you rank at the same level as the emperor, as a matter of fact, you still have guys like the Imperial Counselor and Grand Tutor to get through before you even get close to that kind of ministerial power.

    3) Box office success
    Hercules, despite having its fans, didn't do very well intitially, as with all the other movies with otherwise qualifying princesses.
    With Anna, Elsa and Moana, you'd expect them to qualify in all ways, and they do, apart from one minor problem. They are *too* successful. The movies are more their own franchises than your average, run-of-the-mill princess movies.

The reason anna and elsa are out is cause of money. They made WAY more money so they got their own franchise so you pay more for them separate from the others.
    So glad this is just a theory

    I remember playing Disney Princess games. Every princess had pets. Cinderella had a bunny with a light blue tint. I think Ariel had a pink something or other. But they were all “at home” pets. It’s interesting to consider the “dress and animal” qualifications

  • @twinsocks

    You had it right at 8:53 it is definitely the box office performance. It's profitability of merchandising. The reason Moana didn't make the cut and Frozen girls still don't is simply because their own franchise was/is still making too much money to be passed over to Disney Princess yet. "One year after movie" has probably been a convenient round time to be doing it since that puts the newly coronated princess into the Disney Princess lineup just in time for holidays, but Moana didn't get retired to DP for multiple years because her franchise was still profiting and they didn't want to muddy her profitability by making her a DP too soon. Anna and Elsa have done insanely well, and I suspect having TWO of them has really helped the franchise as well, now you need TWO dolls, two costumes, two calculator watches, etc. But when the Frozen franchise stops making a better return on investment than DP, they will become DP too. All Disney animated female protagonists will, they're designed with that taken into consideration from the outset now.

    So I've been with the Disney company for about 5 years so maybe I can add some insight? so frozen and Moana wont be in the Disney princess line up simply because their franchises make too much money as stand alone. Mulan is a princess because she did an act or selfless bravery and Disney changed the rules so she could be added. Also if the movie didn't do well in theater they princess wouldn't be added (sword in the stone, black cauldron, Atlantis ECT) should also be noted tinker bell was also a Disney princess at one point before they made the Disney fairies.hope this helps

      Amber Williams what made interesting for me (watching it in it's entirety as an adult) i understood it better and realized it's like they flipped the script on Tarzan. It didn't hurt the movie i don't think but you can tell kids didn't gravitate to it much because it was more serious and the color scheme reflected that

    The actual criteria is
    -Must be a main female character in an animated Disney movie.(pixar does count)
    -Either be born royal, marry royal, or commit an act of heroism.
    -Box office does matter, but Moana and Anna/Elsa outshine all the other movies because they made too much money.
    Also no the SuperCarlinBrothers already figured out that Venelope probably will not be a Disney princess.
    Edit: You must also be human.

    There are actually official rules to be a Disney princess. They come in like sets.
    Set 1
    You must
    - have a primary role in a fully animated film
    - be human
    - not be introduced in a sequel
    Set 2
    You must either
    - be born royal
    - marry royal
    - or commit an act of true bravery
    Set 3
    You must
    - wear a marketable dress
    - have a cute animal sidekick
    Oh, and you need to be a box office success.

    Elsa was a Queen before giving up her right to the throne. Therefore making Anna Queen. That’s why they aren’t counted. As for Moana, she was made an official Disney Princess in 2019. Box Office numbers, and Heroic acts (e.g. Mulan) do factor into it.
    Super Carlin Brothers (btw you guys should collaborate sometime) have determined the requirements to become a Disney Princess. I recommend visiting their theory channel. Just saying…

    Merida has two songs in her movie, sung by herself, although she is not moving her lips, it's like she is singing them in her head or telling her story from another point of view adding the song, like her voiceover at the beginning and end of the movie suggest... Also the Merida Singing Dolls actually sing Touch the Sky.
