    Oh, I remember Super Paper Mario, with it's amazing plot, creative gameplay and wide cast of characters. And a total of 1 Toad.
    That game generated a lot of controversy, since it changed so much from the previous installments on the Paper Mario franchise. However, I still think it is an amazing game, along with TTYD and PM64.
    Then Sticker Star happened and hell broke loose.

      @jowysw Před 7 lety +22

      Joseph Cross looking back it seems that every Paper Mario game do something good and something bad. Probably that is because they changed the type of game that Paper Mario is multiple times.
      Super Paper Mario had a really interesting setting and probably the best story in all Paper Mario games but the gameplay is bland.
      TTYD had a good story and good battle system but the overworld exploration wasn't really great. (SPM at least is a lot easier and less tedious to backtrack).
      CS had good overworld exploration and even if the story wasn't great the writing was quite good. And even if the battle system is basically the Sticker Star formula done right that formula still is the Sticker Star one.

      @JJSquirtle Před 3 lety +4

      Here's my take as someone who played ttyd as a rental, super, then sticker, then 64, then colour, and finally reacquired ttyd.
      Fans of the series fit into 2 categories. Traditional RPG fans, and traditional adventure game fans.
      If you value story, widly varied characters, and extremely customizable battle systems, you prefer rpgs.
      If you value exploration, puzzle solving, and simple combat, you're into traditional adventure games.
      Adventure enthusiasts may get annoyed when the older games stop constantly to give lore since they just want to explore. They also probably care less about combat so not having to invest too much into it is more appealing.
      RPG players on the other hand, dislike watered down stories, they often see simplicity in a story as a missed opportunity to truly elaborate and hit home. They want deep strategic combat that somewhat accurately reflects their strength compared to yours. That's right, "yours". RPG players like immersing in a role at the end of the day. Every extra sentence.
      Super fans generally fit in the rpg category, due in no small part for the straws.

      @@Kurumithespiritnightmare while I appreciate your mindset, I wholeheartedly disagree with your stance that everyone should "just accept that games change over time". that's simply not true. it's not a law of nature that all video game series should get radically redesigned from the ground up for no logical reason. if people don't like the change made to the paper mario series, they are entitled to their opinion.

      @@jclkaytwo i agree with you it’s hard to accept unwanted changes in certain game seories it’s just that it’s been 20 freaking years since the last rpg paper mario game you eventually have to wonder why the older paper mario fans haven’t moved on from the whole “paper mario is an rpg” thing when it’s been 20 years since the last rpg paper mario game it’s probably time to just shut up about it and move on but overall i agree with you i think that they should make 2 types of paper mario games the rpg kind and the action adventure kind to make both sides happy i’d love to have another paper mario game more akin to the thousand year door too as it’s probably my favorite one right next to the 64 version but it’s just pretty clear that we won’t be getting another true rpg paper mario game so i’ve just been playing bug fables from now on

      Elemental Origin it does (it's medals just to correct you....... again lol) but the difference is that each medal actually has stats and (for the most part) completely unique special attacks. you combine that with the fact that you can level up and evolve the medals, add abilities, and later "guilt" them to level up their special attacks, and a "nova" attack that levels up when you guilt medals....yeah definitely not the sticker star battle system and really strategic in terms of free to play games

Nope."), this video is actually making me consider getting Color Splash at some point. Maybe not at the $60 price tag, but still, the thought is there now. Your scripting was great for this episode; had you not mentioned that TTYD's main exploration wasn't fun, I think I would still be blinded by nostalgia, and/or ignorant as to why I or new players are not enjoying themselves in some way, shape, or form.

      That's what I'm trying to say to myself. It has funny lines, but all of it has the gameplay of boring exploration that I find is completely different from good exploration made in other RPGs that make a bigger world out of that exploration. All of the exploration is you getting something that won't affect you in the long run. And there's a lot of things in this game that I find no individuality from. The landscapes are boring to me, the levels are boring to me, the use of the hammer seems to be a gimmick more than anything. And why is it every time they go along with this wink and nod humor, I find it mostly wasted on a game that has barley any variety to back it up. It seems stilted in its own ideas and doesn't really know how to progress things in its own manner.

      Playing a game is a lot different then watching. If you're not playing, you have no control of your actions.
      Color Splash is a game that's a ton of fun when you're in control of what you're doing as it gives you a very non-linear experience. You're free to decide the pace and it's not actively forcing you to do one thing.
      Not that watching a Let's play isn't fun, that's why Let's plays are so popular to begin with. But it's a completely different type of experience of it's own.

      but yeah, most toads other than the super major characters do generally have similar designs, I guess that is true, but I probably wouldn't want the different hairstyles from Paper Mario or TTYD because those guys look like they have hair coming out of their foreheads, considering their mushroom is their actual head and not a cap

    My main issue with Color Splash is jus how shallow an experience it is. It's funny, and it's has good graphics... and that's pretty much it. There's nothing it really offers that's not immediately there. Thousand Year Door offers the same things, but on top of that it gives us a world that actually has some depth to it, with characters all across the world referencing each other, changing dialogue as the story progresses, and actually having unique designs that reflect their individual personalities. I also just found TTYD to actually feel rewarding in terms of exploration and combat, though those are more personal preferences, so I guess that depends on the player. I found this video to be a somewhat cheap comparison, as one game is clearly more flawed than the other, but you never really address this fact and keep trying to play them up as equals.

    The Thousand Year Door is like the classic Genesis Sonic games. They're not perfect, but they're still held to as a golden example of quality, and fans still long for their true successor. Meanwhile, Color Splash is like Sonic Adventure. It did many things very differently from the original classics, and are virtually different genres than their predecessors, but are still good games. The problem lies here - The Sonic Fanbase is split down the middle. Many want a true 2D Genesis Sonic successor, while others want Sonic Adventure 3. Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot, even if Color Splash was perfect, the Fanbase will be split between the Thousand Year Door fans and the Color Splash fans. They now have the responsibility, whether they know it or not, to please both types of fans, like Capcom appealing to Mega Man fans and Mega Man X fans. Good luck, Nintendo.

    • @colefitzpatrick8431
      @colefitzpatrick8431 Před 7 lety +3

      Serge Bernhardt Fair enough, but I still say Color Splash is similar to Sonic Adventure. Sticker Star would probably be Sonic R or Sonic 3D Blast, where they tried to reinvent the Sonic formula for the new age of 3D gaming and, more or less, failed. Sticker Star brought many changes to Paper Mario to bring the franchise to a new console generation, and again, failed. Color Splash and Sonic Adventure build upon their failed predecessors on the Saturn and 3DS, and while they are good games, they provide a vastly different experience to the older titles that everyone cherishes. Many people would be content with a new TTYD Paper Mario and Genesis Sonic, but some people want SA3, and I think at least some people would be slightly interested in a Color Splash 2. It's not as many people as the guys who want SA3, but still, there probably is a following out there. Meanwhile, Super Paper Mario would be something like Sonic Spinball, Super Paper Mario is a great game but very different from the ones before it. Sonic Spinball is also a good game but definitely not Classic Sonic material. Both games are almost as well recognized as the others, but retain that classic Sonic and classic Paper Mario feel, to an extent. It's a bit of an odd comparison, but I feel it has some merit.

    5:03 there is more story than just that like let’s talk about the villains plan.If you think about it the black pain’s plan is actually Way bigger than it seems. We learn in the game that the black paint is incredibly toxic and can easily kill someone as seen with Mario at sunglow ridge. We also know that the black paint can possess people as demonstrated with Bowser. We also know the black paint is made by mixing all the colors of the rainbow together. Now let’s look at the black paint’s plan. First the black paint possesses Bowser and using Bowser‘s army attacks Prisma Island. He gets his shy guy minions to suck up a bunch of paint from the island and then put the paint in buckets attached to airships. Then the air ships are taken to Bowser sky castle where are all of the paint is mixed into black paint then the black paint is put into black paint bombs. The black paint possessing Bowser throws the big paint stars all over the island so color cannot be restored he then gets Kamek to Get a paper toad drained of its color put a port prisma stamp on it and mail it to princess peach. Then Mario peach and a toad come to the island and black Bowser tries to get his minions to kill them but his minions fail so he sends the the koopalings to find and protect the big pain stars so Mario and Huey can’t get them remember this is not Bowser this is black Bowser Who is bowser being possessed by the black paint. Black Bowser then kidnaps peach just to demonstrate his power. Black Bowser wants to cover the entire world and black paint. That is what the game tells us but if we look a little deeper black Bowser’s plan has some devastating effects. If black Bowser has enough black paint bombs to cover the whole world black then he would kill everyone in the world because the black paint is highly toxic and then the black paint would possess everyone’s corpses making a new population to live on Earth.

    GREAT VIDEO. In my recent TYD run (where I brought my HP down to 5 and used danger mario tactics) I was started to feel some of the criticisms that you brought up about the linear levels. It's my favorite game of all time, no doubt, but I was still noticing some of its issues. I know color splash's battle system is awful, but I agree the levels were all really unique and fun and I walked away thinking it was a great game. If Origami King brings both of these elements to the table (battle system already looks more interesting) then I think we're all in for a treat!

    First paper Mario game I got was sticker star so I grew up with a bad influence of the bunch. I can understand why a lot of people hate the direction that paper Mario is going in but I can’t find myself absolutely hating sticker star or the next two games. I know that it was originally supposed to be like a story book but over time it became more paper than RPG. But I originally thought that’s what paper Mario was all about. So yeah I guess sticker star kind of ruined me. But I’m really interested in the newer paper Mario titles I think it’s really interesting having that whole paper aesthetic.

    Ok. Am I the only one who is actually happy for the Koopalings being in this game? Also, I never wanna hear someone say that the Koopalings shouldn't be in the Mario games anymore. They are a staple if the series as some of the oldest bosses in the series and are now actually developing a character to each of them in some of the RPG games. Now you want to throw them away hen we're actually getting character development with them? I thought that people love character developments. I get it, their bosses in the 2D games are not exactly the greatest and we're seeing them a lot more often, but the truth is that they aren't bad bosses, older fans of the series have just been getting too good at these games to where the bosses look too easy. How do you think the Koopaling fights might be like if you were a new player who hasn't really played the series before. Yeah. That was how I felt when I played my first Mario Games being NSmB DS/Wii, MKW, All Stars 25th Anniversary, and Galaxy 1 and 2. Some of the bosses including the Koopalings were just tough for me and would die plenty of times. Now, let's just hope that if they were in a main 3D Mario game that Nintendo would do it right.
    I'm surprised that I didn't go on am entire rant about how all Paper Mario Games, including the ones I haven't played yet which was all but SPM and Color Splash, are actually good and Nintendo is just wanting to try something new with their games and not always keep the same things. I feel that a true Paper Mario game needs to have some sort of story, a battle system of some sort (SPM had it in a way), humor, and a diverse world to explore. That's what Paper Mario really is.

    • @asierx7047
      @asierx7047 Před 3 lety +3

      Good point. The koopalings never got easier. In fact, Ludwig seems harder after every game. look at SMM2, he just has the hardest to dodge attacks.

  • @blitzydragon4048

    2 words that describe color splash: artifical length.
    Color splash forces you to run around searching for an example, the colored toads, they give very few pointers and directions to where to find them. Forcing you to run around blindly checking everything in a level several times, padding out the levels and adding a painful extra hour or two to the game for each one of these. It got to the point with me that I just gave up and looked up a guide after 4 hours of searching for the purple toads because it was required to get the item to beat morton. Now whether this is an isolated experience and im just not very good at finding secrets or something is up for debate. Plus unneeded extra paint stars that only really count for completion and no story progress once all the adjacent levels are unlocked. Like only needing 2-3 yellow paint stars for the first areas and there being an extra 3 laying about. Now sure, its ok to have optional stars if you cant find them all, but it left a pit in my stomach after finding all the area 1 blue stars and having it only account for 2 levels when there are about 4 stars, making me feel jipped for going after them with no reward.
    The battle system is also as faulty as it can be, sometimes I feel my inputs went registering with the action commands even though I had experience with a lot of the same mechanics in TTYD, it was activating to feel like I timed it perfectly only to get the worst outcome of the attack. The card mechanic also makes it agonizing longer than needed, forcing you to scroll through the cards to find the exact one you need, now this wouldnt be as much of a problem if it didnt require the gamepad. Simple button imputs could have fixed the entire system but instead they had to make the gamepad seem useful so they made it touch controlled only. The idea you can only attack if you have enough paint was an ok idea, but really I just got rid of all my blank cards once the shop opened and bought all precolored cards, I had an abundance of coins from the stupid blank spots.
    BACK TRACKING IS EVERYWHERE, and the game outright forces you to go back through levels if missing an item, like I had to climb morton's tower 5+ times because I thought I was just bad at the boss fight and didn't think I needed a special thing. Also in one case tells you to leave an item you KNOW will be needed later saying its not important. Forcing you to go back to the level after 2 stages or so to pick up that one item at the end.
    The painting mechanic is unrewarding to say the least, coins, occasional cards and maybe being required once or twice a stage is not enough to make it worth while. Its more game lengthening busy work. Completionists like me feel frustrated when we spend a good extra 20 min in a level to fill all the blanks and still be missing 10% only to find the last part behind a tree or something.
    The map is another thing, sure you can tackle things in any order if they are unlocked but it is still extremely linear and are just a 3d path ala super mario 3d world but boring. The visuals are at times TOO pretty and detailed masking over the somewhat charm the first 2 games had, everything being made of crafts and the constant cardboard textures just made me wish it wasnt there most of the time. TTYD had that kind of style too but it was sparingly which offered balanced and wasnt overly pretty or heavily shaded because it didn't need to be, its just a distraction in color splash and not very creative, getting boring by the 2nd area.
    The comedy is stilted and just kinda... eeeh? I didnt have a single laugh and its a shame :l... it tries to pander to more familiar with the series, ie, the lost levels joke and alienates some more new/casual fans.
    All in all it falls under the "its passable in some things but don't expect me to actually finish it" kind of game for me.
